R. López de Heredia Viña Cubillo

2015 / 750 ml.

Item #: 25940

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The 2015 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza reflects the warmer conditions of the year, and with the riper fruit they picked to produce this wine, they still managed to keep around 13.5% alcohol. The Cubillo vineyard has more clay, and sometimes clay soils take heat better and make the wines fresher than those from poorer soils. 140,000 bottles produced. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Brilliant bright ruby. Ripe cherry, raspberry preserves and candied flowers on the highly perfumed nose and palate. Boasts excellent depth and energy, with a spine of juicy acidity adding focus and lift. This powerful yet lithe wine finishes with strong punch; supple tannins sneak in late to contribute shape and grip.

Item #: 38756

JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, June 8, 2022
Very fresh with aromas of lemon pith, white grapefruit, crushed shells and slate. Some biscuits and salted yellow plums. Medium-bodied with beautiful minerality and freshness. Vivid finish. Blend of viura, white grenache and malvasia. Drink or hold.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The white 2021 Blanco was produced with a blend of Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía de Rioja that fermented in oak vats and new French barriques and matured with the lees and two bâtonnages per week in the beginning and later daily for a total of four months. It’s balsamic, a little medicinal and aromatic. They keep growing in Garnacha Blanca with very good results. It’s light and fresh, with very clean aromas and flavors. 240,000 bottles produced. It was bottled at different times from a master blend. (Luis Gutiérrez)

A solid nose common to Rioja smells like earthy berry fruits, dried leaves and olives. A punchy palate with screechy acidity offers flavors of plum and currant touched up by oaky vanilla. More of the same along with a touch of prune carries the finish. Drink through 2022.

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The 2011 Viña Tondonia Reserva is darker and shows riper fruit, a rounder palate and some dusty tannins. A year of ripeness, concentration and tannin, the wine is powerful with the finesse of Tondonia. Tasting this next to the textbook 2010 Tondonia revealed how this has more muscle and a wider back and the 2010 epitomizes the finesse and elegance. 270,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2019. (Luis Gutiérrez)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2024
Richly savory on the nose, this fresh, sinewy red features a minerally underpinning of petrol, earth, iron and salt to the flavors of juicy dried cherry and cranberry, red licorice and mandarin orange peel. Opens nicely in the glass and on the palate, with the persistent finish showing aromatic herbs and spices, plus more mineral notes. Tempranillo, Garnacho, Graciano and Mazuelo. Drink now through 2031. 19,166 cases made, 4,500 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

Viña Real Rioja Crianza

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 39321

RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The bottle I tasted of the 2016 Viña Real Crianza is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alavesa that fermented destemmed in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and matured in French and American oak barrels for 13 to 14 months, during which time it was racked every five or six months. It’s expressive, deliciously aromatic, floral and elegant, reflecting a cool year that delivered fresh wines that seem to be very approachable early on. 2016 is a pretty vintage, but this wine is not banal; it has depth and complexity that’s remarkable for the price point. The palate is fresh and balanced, with fine tannins. 900,000 bottles produced. It’s bottled in five lots. I tasted from the bottles filled in April 2019.

Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva

2015 / 750 ml.

Item #: 51062

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The most classical of their wines, the 2015 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, mostly from Rioja Alta (Sajazarra, Cellorigo and Fonzaleche), but the Garnacha is from different plots in the zone of Tudelilla at high altitude. These grapes are always picked last, but the wine has a similar alcohol level as the rest, around 14.5% in a warm year like 2019. The modus operandi is similar to other of the top cuvées—harvested into 200-kilogram boxes, destemming, optical sorting and fermentation in small oak casks with indigenous yeasts. The élevage in this case is extended to 36 months, and the barrels are only 10% new. This is, year in, year out, my favorite wine from Muga, and in this powerful and ripe year, these late-harvesting vines ripened thoroughly and delivered a full array of aromas and flavors so that the wine has plenty of depth and complexity. It has a very classical profile, with incipient tertiary notes, perfumed, floral and rich, textured and beautifully balanced. They compare this 2015 with 2009 and 2005 in terms of style but with freshness in the style of 2001 and 2010. It’s enjoyable but should also develop for a long time in bottle. One of the finest Prado Enea vintages. 108,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018. There’s no 2012 or 2013 of this. There will be a 2016 and 2019, but no 2017 or 2018. 2020 is still a question mark, they have not yet decided it. (Luis Gutiérrez)
JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, November 20, 2022
Reserved and polished, this is a Prado Enea with great class and focus. It’s so aromatic, with plum, peach, cherry and cedar character. Salted olives, too. Medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins and a long, fresh finish. Elegance with power here. Give it three or four years to open, but already impressive. (James Suckling)

Aromas of blackberry, dried mountainside herbs and black olives set the stage for flavors of black currant, Luxardo cherry, anisette, thyme and black truffle. Sleek tannins ply their way across the palate and drift off into a cool, spicy finish. (Mike Desimone)

Muga Reserva

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 38757

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, September 9, 2022
This is a structured and linear Muga Reserva with a creamy and fine-tannined backbone and graphite, cherry, plum and black-truffle character. Medium-bodied, racy and beautiful. 70% tempranillo, 20% grenache and 10% mazuelo and graciano. Delicious now, but will age beautifully in the cellar. (James Suckling)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The 2019 Reserva, sold as Crianza in Spain, comes from a dry and warm year with low yields and concentrated wines. The grapes from the Haro zone, the four from Rioja, Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo and Graciano fermented destemmed and lightly crushed in oak vats with indigenous yeasts, and 80% of the volume matured in French oak and the rest in Centro European and American oak, 20% of them new, for 22 months, during which time the wine was racked every eight to nine months. This is serious and young but balanced, nuanced and complex. They are shortening the time in oak, as they feel they have better and younger barrels and think the wines need less time in oak and more time in bottle. This is very Muga, very Rioja and very good. They produced an impressive 960,000 bottles and 18,000 magnums of this. There is only one master blend that is bottled at different times. I tasted a bottle that was filled in April 2022 (because of the lack of availability of bottles!). (Luis Gutiérrez)

This deep-hued wine has a bouquet of black plum, cinnamon stick and citrus zest. Black cherry, pomegranate, milk chocolate, violet, caramel and eucalyptus flavors are wrapped in a sheath of velvety tannins that endure on the tongue and gums with a light floral note. (Mike DeSimone)

Cune Imperial Reserva

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 2, 2020
A firm, tannic red with blackberry and walnut character on both the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied and chewy with a long, flavorful finish. Needs bottle age to soften. Try after 2022. (James Suckling)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2021
Saturated garnet. Ripe cherry, red currant and pungent flowers on the expansive nose, along with vanilla and tobacco nuances that build in the glass. Sweet and broad on the palate, offering oak-spiced red and dark berry and fruitcake flavors and a hint of candied flowers. Slowly building tannins frame the clinging finish, which shows excellent clarity and repeating cherry and vanilla notes.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2022
A fresh and elegant red, which deftly knits sinewy tannins with roasted black plum, graphite and black cherry flavors and savory accents of beef bouillon, smoke and tobacco. Lingering and chewy finish. Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. Drink now through 2027. 12,500 cases made, 1,500 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

Shop for Grenache/Garnacha

You may also know it as Spanish Garnacha or Cannonau in Sardinia, but regardless of what you call it Grenache is well-suited to a variety of warm climates throughout the world -- from southern France to Australia and California.

The grape is thought to have originated in Sardinia and was brought to Spain by subjects of the Crown of Aragon who controlled Sardinia. From Spain, Grenache then crossed the Pyrenees to southern France where it's used in Rhone blend wines.

In the Priorat region of Spain and France’s Chaeauneuf-du-Pape, the poor soils and low yields produce concentrated, complex wines worthy of aging. These better examples may have notes of black currants, black cherries, black olives, coffee, gingerbread, honey, leather, black pepper, tar, roasted nuts and figs. The dry rosés of Lirac and Tavel with flavors of strawberries and cream are among the best in the world. Grenache can also be used to make port-like sweet dessert wines, especially in Australia.
