Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Reserve 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 63891

RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
The limestone starts in the Reserva/Reserve range, of which I tasted the 2018 Malbec Reserve, which is produced from vineyards on limestone soils in Altamira and Gualtallary. This is incredibly elegant, floral and expressive, with superb minerality on the palate. It has fine-grained tannins and is silky, tasty, long and expressive. Superb! This wine is all about texture, and it’s the best reserve I ever remember.
WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/21
Alberto Antonini and Antonio Morescalchi began this project after a visit to Mendoza in the mid-1990s, now working with wine geologist Pedro Parra and winemaker Attilio Pagli. This malbec has a balance of weight and freshness, transitioning into blueberry flavors and violet florals in the middle. It’s lean and clean, with an earthy softness at the end.

Where It's From

Region / Mendoza

View more wines from Mendoza

Mendoza is Argentina's largest wine region, and produces a majority of the Argentine wines on the market. Much of the region lies in the foothills of the Andes mountains, and as result Mendoza vineyards are typically located at higher altitudes than most. Mendoza is the epicenter of the Malbec craze that has taken the wine world by storm in recent years, but also produces great examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and other grapes.

Country / Argentina

View more wines from Argentina

Argentina took the wine world spotlight in the late 20th century with its plush, smooth Malbec. While the popular red grape still reigns supreme, Argentine wineries are increasingly putting forth excellent examples of multiple varietals, all at the extraordinary bargains that make this region so accessible.

Now the fifth largest wine-producing nation in the world, Argentina enjoys high-altitude and low-humidity vineyard sites, comparatively unencumbered by insects and disease. Argentina’s unique terroir has captured the interest of such internationally celebrated winemakers as Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, both of whom have projects in the country.

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The 2018 Eolo comes from a vineyard planted in 1912 on the banks of the Mendoza River, four hectares in Luján de Cuyo. It fermented with selected yeasts and matured for 18 months 50% in new French oak barrels and 50% in oak foudre. It’s a powerful Malbec with 14.5% alcohol, good concentration and balance and is a little closed and quite young. It’s aromatic and floral with sweet spices, classical and with typical Luján character. It continues on the path toward freshness initiated some years ago. 13,300 bottles were filled in November 2019. (Luis Gutiérrez)
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2022
Great complexity on the nose with enticing floral, blackberry, plum and subtle oak notes. This red is concentrated and lively with firm and silky tannins. The palate delivers plenty of dark fruit flavors with hints of smoke and nice acidity due to a smart use of oak. It is an elegant full-bodied wine made from 100 year old vines, and has a lingering finish with fruit flavors. (Jesica Vargas)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2021
Trivento’s 2018 Malbec Eolo from Vistalba, Luján de Cuyo was aged for 16 months, 50% in varied use toasted barrels and 50% in foudres. Dark purple in the glass, the complex aromas include ripe plum, blackberry and blueberry with pepper and notes from the aging process such as cedar and vanilla. Broad and voluminous on the palate, the precise freshness livens up the flow and lends depth. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 8, 2021
Ripe-plum, blueberry, lavender and cocoa aromas. It’s full-bodied with ripe, rounded tannins. Smooth and seamless, almost buttery, with layers of dark fruit and sweet spice. Fresh mid-palate, but leads to a long, evolving finish. Drink or hold.

Inseparable Malbec 2018 / 750 ml.

2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 57081

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The new red 2018 Inseparable was produced with Malbec from the heart of Gualtallary Monasterio above 1,400 meters in altitude, planted over one of the chalkiest and poorest soils within the Valle de Uco. The hand-picked grapes were destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in 3,000-liter concrete vats, and the wine was racked into neutral French oak barrels, where it matured for 14 months. This is the more approachable and immediate of the wines, a good introduction to their portfolio, a very young and tender wine that is still serious. In 2018, the grapes from the lower part of the vineyard were harvested last, and the grapes had a slower ripening, a classical Gualtallary with some 30 to 40 centimeters of sand where the plants deliver slightly higher yields. Despite 2018 being a warmish vintage, the wine does not show any heat and feels very pure and floral with some notes of fresh herbs, red rather than dark fruit and an earthy twist. The palate reveals a velvety texture and round tannins with citrus freshness (blood orange) and a long and stony finish. This is elegant and balanced, delicious and with potential to develop in bottle. But it’s hard to resist… 10,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2019. (Luis Gutiérrez)

The 2018 Privada Family Blend Norton is a blend of 40% Malbec, 30% Merlot, and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon from Luján de Cuyo and was aged for 16 months in French barrels. Dark purple in the glass, the nose offers notes of fresh plum, mint and violets with white pepper and secondary woody notes such as cedar and vanilla. Intense on the palate, it’s juicy with fine, still reactive tannins that will evolve to lend a velvety texture.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2018 Privada Family Blend is a blend of 40% Malbec and 30% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from vineyards in Luján de Cuyo. It’s classical, barrel aged and ripe with a dense and juicy texture and plenty of tannins that call for food. It has pungent and deep flavors of ripe fruit and spice and leaves a balsamic sensation on the palate. The tannins are chalky. 250,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2019.

JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 8, 2021
This is a firm, structured red that is more about polished tannins than ripe, rich fruit. It’s full-bodied with tightness and focus. Needs time to open. 54% malbec, 21% cabernet sauvignon, 16% petit verdot and 9% tannat. Try after 2023.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2022
Ripe cherry and strawberry aromas with hints of green bell pepper and tobacco show on the nose of this blend of 54% Malbec, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Petit Verdot and 9% Tannat. It’s full bodied, with smooth tannins. Intense fruit flavors blend with spice. Oaky notes are a bit overpowering but nice acidity helps balance the flavors while freshening up the lingering finish. Catena Alta Malbec 2018 / 750 ml.

2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 42398

JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 2, 2020
Beautiful blackberries and green tea with some blueberries. Medium body with beautiful balance, freshness and whole-berry sensibility and brightness. Subtle and sophisticated. Drink or hold.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The 2018 Catena Alta Malbec shows more evolution and ripeness than the 2019. It’s varietal and floral with a mixture of red and black fruit, sweet spices and aromatic herbs. It has moderate ripeness — in fact, it’s a little lower in alcohol than the 2019 — a medium body and fine-grained tannins, with good grip. 162,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2019.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020
A Malbec from Mendoza made from a selection of parcels in different terroirs in Primera Zona and the Uco Valley that spent 18 months in French oak, this is complexity in a bottle. The ripe, layered, evolving nose delivers plum and violet notes followed by a hint of acidic cherry over a woody backdrop. Fleshy on the palate, it offers the good grip and volume typical of Malbec as part of a satisfying combination that also includes a terse texture and juicy freshness.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2022
Well-structured and juicy, with dark cherry and plum tart flavors that feature firm tannins and acidity. The spicy finish offers baker’s chocolate notes and peppery hints. Drink now through 2024. 13,500 cases made, 3,500 cases imported.
WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/21
This is a selection of individual blocks from the Catena vineyards in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. Each block ferments separately on indigenous yeasts, with lees stirring to stabilize it and reduce the addition of sulfur. Eighteen months of oak aging leaves an impression that dampens the finish, but the beginning is spring-like and vivacious, like a meadow in bloom. It’s got the firmness to match up with summer sausage and hard cheeses on a picnic.

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, June 21, 2017
Aromas of mushroom, dark fruit. Hints of dark chocolate. Full and lightly chewy with a lovely texture and a ripe fruit finish. Juicy and delicious. I like the tea and bark at the finish. Malbec and petit verdot. Drink or hold it.
VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2017
Bright, nicely saturated red-ruby. Aromas of cassis, black cherry, licorice pastille and flowers show a slight medicinal cast. Began chewy and a bit unrefined, if a bit less rustic than the 2014 version, but became smoother with time in the glass. Still the wine’s tobacco leaf, menthol, black olive and licorice notes currently impinge on its black cherry fruit. This reminded me of a St. Estèphe! Finishes long, with serious but ripe tannins and suggestions of chocolatey oak and tarry dark berries.

Chakana Estate Selection Red Blend

2013 / 750 ml.

Item #: 38903

RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Aug 2015
The red blend 2013 Estate Selection is mostly Malbec from Gualtallary (60%) and the rest Cabernet and Syrah from Altamira, which together with the vintage conditions might explain the freshness and different profile, definitively less ripe and oaky than in the past. The rest of the blend is 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Syrah. This is a very spicy, high pitched red with good balance between elegance and power, ripe without any excess. This is a wine that is easy to drink, a priority in the winery as they felt that the very extracted and oaky wines from the past were difficult to drink. The whole of Mendoza is harvesting earlier and producing fresher wines, but the risk is to do it too early and produce green wine. Great acidity and very polished tannins. 90,000 bottles.
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2004
Very crisp, with snappy raspberry, red currant and white plum flavors. Quite minerally, showing notes of ripe citrus on the focused and spicy finish. Drink now through 2018. 625 cases imported.

RP90+90+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The red 2020 Malbec Clásico was produced with 80% grapes from Luján de Cuyo and 20% grapes from Valle de Uco, mostly their own grapes, all in stainless steel and vinified by plot with their native yeasts. It matured in concrete for nine months. It’s ripe without excess and develops a full array of aromas and flavors but keeping 13.5% alcohol, very fresh for the warm year. It’s juicy, complex beyond fruit, a little herbal, medium-bodied and with very fine tannins. It’s clean, expressive and open, a wine that has to be approachable from when you pull the cork. They are working to increase the drinkability, which will be seen more and more in the following years. This represents the largest part of their production with some 500,000 bottles. There are different bottlings. (Luis Gutiérrez)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2022
The 2020 Malbec Clásico is 75% from Luján de Cuyo and 25% from the Uco Valley. A mild purple hue. Considering the year, the nose presents notes of quite fresh plum with hints of herbs, syrup and floral aromas. In the mouth, it has good volume, firm, grippy tannins and an expansive flow before the ripe finish. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
JS9090 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, May 3, 2022
Nice sour cherries with a streak of white pepper and violets. Medium-bodied, but fleshy. Ripe, almost creamy tannins extend to the finish, but are still juicy and vibrant. Not complex, but so balanced and easy to drink. Drink now.

RP91+91+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The 2019 Malbec Terroir Valle de Uco was produced with grapes from La Consulta and Tupungato on stony soils fermented by plot with indigenous yeasts and matured mostly in concrete (75%) with a part in 3,500-liter oak foudres for 18 months. It has moderate 13% alcohol and a combination of power, elegance and great freshness, reflecting a great vintage. It’s articulate and has complexity, and it’s open and talks to you with a wide palette of aromas and flavors. It’s very fine and elegant and tastes like a much more expensive wine with the freshness from the vintage and the cooler place. It has to be one of the finest vintages of this bottling and a great value too. 28,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, May 3, 2022
