Chakana Estate Selection Red Blend 2013 / 750 ml.

Item#: 38903

RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Aug 2015
The red blend 2013 Estate Selection is mostly Malbec from Gualtallary (60%) and the rest Cabernet and Syrah from Altamira, which together with the vintage conditions might explain the freshness and different profile, definitively less ripe and oaky than in the past. The rest of the blend is 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Syrah. This is a very spicy, high pitched red with good balance between elegance and power, ripe without any excess. This is a wine that is easy to drink, a priority in the winery as they felt that the very extracted and oaky wines from the past were difficult to drink. The whole of Mendoza is harvesting earlier and producing fresher wines, but the risk is to do it too early and produce green wine. Great acidity and very polished tannins. 90,000 bottles.
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2004
Very crisp, with snappy raspberry, red currant and white plum flavors. Quite minerally, showing notes of ripe citrus on the focused and spicy finish. Drink now through 2018. 625 cases imported.

Where It's From

Region / Mendoza

View more wines from Mendoza

Mendoza is Argentina's largest wine region, and produces a majority of the Argentine wines on the market. Much of the region lies in the foothills of the Andes mountains, and as result Mendoza vineyards are typically located at higher altitudes than most. Mendoza is the epicenter of the Malbec craze that has taken the wine world by storm in recent years, but also produces great examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and other grapes.

Country / Argentina

View more wines from Argentina

Argentina took the wine world spotlight in the late 20th century with its plush, smooth Malbec. While the popular red grape still reigns supreme, Argentine wineries are increasingly putting forth excellent examples of multiple varietals, all at the extraordinary bargains that make this region so accessible.

Now the fifth largest wine-producing nation in the world, Argentina enjoys high-altitude and low-humidity vineyard sites, comparatively unencumbered by insects and disease. Argentina’s unique terroir has captured the interest of such internationally celebrated winemakers as Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, both of whom have projects in the country.

The 2020 Red Blend Estate Selection is a blend of 60% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc (from Paraje Altamira, Gualtallary and Los Chacayes, respectively, all in the Uco Valley) and was 40% aged in used barrels and a third in foudres. Purple in the glass. The expressive nose presents notes of fresh fruit such as cherry and blackcurrant accompanied by herbs and a whiff of ash. In the mouth, it’s compact with a refined expression in which the freshness wins out before the long, fruity finish. Will improve in the bottle. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The 2020 Estate Selection Red Blend was produced with 60% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc with 14% alcohol. It matured in 225- and 500-liter French barriques and oak vats for one year. It has aromas of violets, herbal notes and sweet spices, and the palate reveals good freshness and abundant, slightly dusty tannins. 11,000 bottles were filled in February 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)

The 2020 Malbec Chakana Estate Selection (from Paraje Altamira & Gualtallary, Uco Valley) was a third aged in used barrels and a third in foudres. A mild purple hue. The nose presents gentle notes of fresh plum, violets and hints of thyme over a pleasant bed of oak. Indulgent with slightly reactive tannins, the flow is juicy and fairly compact. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
2020 was a warm and dry year with ripe grapes, but they managed to keep the 2020 Estate Selection Malbec quite balanced and fresh. It has a fruit-driven profile with clean fruit and some fine tannins. This matured in neutral and larger oak containers for 12 months. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Pulls together a nice mix of bramble berry, pomegranate molasses and spice, with subtle tobacco and loam notes underneath and hints of chocolate on the finish. Drink now. 14,450 cases made, 5,000 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)
