Where It's From
Region / Mendoza
Mendoza is Argentina's largest wine region, and produces a majority of the Argentine wines on the market. Much of the region lies in the foothills of the Andes mountains, and as result Mendoza vineyards are typically located at higher altitudes than most. Mendoza is the epicenter of the Malbec craze that has taken the wine world by storm in recent years, but also produces great examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and other grapes.
Country / Argentina
View more wines from Argentina
Argentina took the wine world spotlight in the late 20th century with its plush, smooth Malbec. While the popular red grape still reigns supreme, Argentine wineries are increasingly putting forth excellent examples of multiple varietals, all at the extraordinary bargains that make this region so accessible.
Now the fifth largest wine-producing nation in the world, Argentina enjoys high-altitude and low-humidity vineyard sites, comparatively unencumbered by insects and disease. Argentina’s unique terroir has captured the interest of such internationally celebrated winemakers as Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, both of whom have projects in the country.

Perfumed and seductive nose of purple plums, blueberries, dried roses, violets, lemon zest, chocolate, truffles and cigar box. It’s full-bodied, yet so elegant and weightless. Seamless, finely knit tannins. Beautiful, lengthy finish. Try from 2024.
The 2020 Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino follows the path of the 2019, harvested early and fermented with 100% full clusters in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in oak vats and some barrels for 12 to 18 months. It’s juicy, powerful and with abundant tannins and a slight earthiness. It’s a little more voluptuous and mixes grapes from Angélica (Lunlunta) and some from Nicasia (Altamira). 45,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
The gothic label, drawn by Rick Shaefer, depicts malbec’s journey to Argentina through four women, from its ancestral home in Cahors under the stewardship of Eleanor of Aquitaine to its new world home in the Catena family’s vineyards. This wine hails from a mass selection of ungrafted malbec vines planted during the 1920s in the Angélica Vineyard; the original plant material arrived from France before that country’s 19th century bout with phylloxera. A second mass selection from these vines was planted in the Nicasia Vineyard in 1996. It ferments in new French oak, including 20 percent of the fruit as whole bunches, pointing up the purple-blue-black fruit complexity that grounds the wine while an airy whipped-coffee edge adds levity. Rich and intense but not heavy, this will reward years of cellaring, but it’s hard to feel too bad about opening a bottle now when it tastes this good.

Red plums with some crushed-stone and tile undertones. Some graphite and fresh flowers, too. Full-bodied with juicy tannins and a fruity, firm and juicy palate overall. Plenty of malbec character, but tensioned and not heavy. Solid structure. Sustainable. Drink now.
The 2020 Malbec Reserva from Mendoza is partially aged in used barrels. A vivid purple in hue. The nose displays sour cherry, ripe plum and hints of sweetbrier. It’s indulgent and juicy in the mouth with reactive tannins that corset the flow before oaky flavors develop at the end. A well-made, refreshing wine in spite of the warm year. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

The 2021 Malbec Virgen Orgánico comes from the Uco Valley and has no added sulfites. Violet in color. The nose is straightforwardly reductive with notes of gunpowder preceding faint aromas of dark fruit. In the mouth, the tannins are reactive, along with the reductive nose, this ensures the wine’s longevity. The dark fruit returns at the end. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
Baked black cherries, lifted by violet flowers. Some licorice and hints of lychees and bruised grapes. A medium-bodied red with juicy fruit and dense tannins. Natural malbec. From organically grown grapes. No sulfites added. Vegan. Drink now. Screw cap.
