Item#: 54839

JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, April 28, 2022
Cigar box and sandalwood to the currants, dried herbs and grilled spices. A medium-to full-bodied carmenere with sleek, polished tannins and juicy berries on the palate, rendered in an elegant set. Very drinkable now, but can hold, too.

Where It's From

Region / Valle Central

View more wines from Valle Central

Valle Central is Chile's most famous and most productive wine region. Located on the other side of the Andes from Argentina's Mendoza wine region, Valle Central is producing outstanding examples of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Chardonnay, and other grapes. Many of these wines are excellent values when compared to wines of similar quality from other parts of the world.

Country / Chile

View more wines from Chile

With its stunning, snowy mountains and beautiful beaches, Chile would be captivating even if it wasn’t turning out some of the most interesting and accessible wines in the world. But large producers like Concha y Toro and Casa LaPostolle have put Chile on the wine map with their complex yet value-driven Merlots and Cabernets, and lately smaller regions like Maipo, Casablanca, and the Bio Bio Valley have become more widely available.

Now, Syrah, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and even that elusive beast of the wine world--affordable Pinot Noir—have joined the ranks of Chile’s most famous offerings. And don’t forget Chile’s signature grape, Carmenere--a peppery, purpley beast that goes wonderfully with grilled meat dishes. Best of all, Chile offers some of the best value in the world, with many outstanding wines selling for under $12.

RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2021
The young, primary and perfumed 2020 Canto Sur is quite impressive for the price. It’s a blend of 50% Carmenere with 25% each Carignan and País, fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts and kept in concrete for six months to keep its wild and raw character. It has moderate alcohol, good freshness and clout to stand up to food. Delicious! (Luis Gutiérrez)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - May 2021
The 2020 Canto Sur—relaunched this year—is a blend of 50% Carménère, 25% Carignan and 25% País, one-third fermented in whole bunches and aged for six months in concrete. Violet in the glass. The nose presents cherry and stalk notes plus floral aromas and hints of black pepper. Voluminous in the mouth; the lick of freshness brings juice and tempers the compressed tannins. A characterful red. (Joaquín Hidalgo)

Purple Angel by Montes 2020 / 750 ml.

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 30335

JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, December 8, 2023
A consistent Purple Angel that really delivers the carmenere’s plushness when ripened well. Dark olives, blackberries and red chili chocolate with a splash of spice and cigar box. Fleshy and concentrated with plenty of fine-grained tannins that extend to a very creamy finish. 92% carmenere, around half from Marchigue and half from Apalta, with 8% petit verdot. Better from 2025. (Zekun Shuai)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2023
The 2020 Carménère Purple Angel contains a dash of Petit Verdot (8%), also from Apalta, Colchagua. It was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 70% of them new. Purple in hue. The sun-kissed nose delivers plum and blackberry jam notes over nuanced layers of ash and spice against a balsamic backdrop. Indulgent and broad in the mouth. The expansive, voluminous palate is full of plummy flavor with a juicy flow and a lasting finish of ripe, fruity aromas. The warm year dialed up the sweetness. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2024
Opens with an elegant array of fresh raspberry, pink peppercorn and river mint flavors before turning broad. Vanilla bean and cassis notes cling to a richly textured blackberry core that lingers around fine tannins, echoing back to the core flavors and adding notes of dark chocolate. Carmenère and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2034. 2,325 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon | Puente Alto Vineyard 2020 / 750 ml.

Puente Alto Vineyard
2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 59179

JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, December 13, 2022
Deep and serious with black olives, blackberries, blueberries, tobacco leaf, sweet red capsicum, ash, dried meat and a hint of black chocolate. This is a more direct, full-bodied Don Melchor, filled with solid blackberries and wrapped by tight, fine-grained tannins. Long and deep. 92% cabernet sauvignon, 6% cabernet franc, 1% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Better after 2024.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2022
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor has a 6% dash of Cabernet Franc along with 1% splashes of Merlot and Petit Verdot from Puente Alto, Maipo, and was aged for 15 months in 71% new French barrels. Vivid garnet red in the glass. The aromatic profile features red fruit such as cherry and black currant along with hints of mint, spice and pepper over secondary aromas from the aging process, including a gentle whiff of cedar. Intense in the mouth, with juicy freshness and young tannins that will integrate better in time. The fruit was especially vivid this year, adding greatly to the nuance and subtle details. This will growth deeper in the bottle. (Joaquín Hidalgo)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2023
Inviting aromas of chocolate-covered cherry, dried rose petal and petrichor set the stage for this well-structured red, which balances concentrated berry and mission fig flavors against vibrant acidity, lending a lush, mouthwatering quality to a finish that swirls with cassis, spices and fine tannins. Drink now through 2038. 14,600 cases made, 3,500 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

VN9292 pts. - Vinous - May 2021
The 2019 Pinot Noir Marques de Casa Concha from the San Julián vineyard in Limarí, 15 miles from the sea, planted in alluvial red clay soil, spent 11 months in French oak barrels. A medium-hued red, it offers crystal-clear aromas of sour cherry and earth and a bare-bones palate with a fine, silky texture and a slightly saline flavor.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2021
The 2019 Marques de Casa Concha Pinot Noir was produced with fruit from vines planted in Limarí between 2006 and 2009. It’s ripe but has kept very good acidity and comes through as balanced and fresh while it’s also powerful. The oak feels more and more integrated, as the wine matured in French oak barrels, 15% of them new, for 11 months. 54,000 bottles were filled in April 2020.
WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2022
Piquant red-fruit aromas of cranberry, currant and raspberry include a note of iodine and a hint of dried meat. This is a lively style of Pinot that’s medium in weight. Spicy oak notes accent plum and raspberry flavors in front of a finish propelled by healthy acidity. (Michael Schachner)
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jan 6, 2022
Shows hints of ripeness to the well-knit dark cherry and currant flavors. The spicy and fresh-tasting finish is accented by beetroot notes. Drink now. 4,500 cases made, 2,500 cases imported. (Kim Marcus)

Spicy and fresh nose with some olives, cassis and a splash of dark chocolate. The medium- to full-bodied palate is laden with powdery tannins before a savory, juicy finish. A tad saline, too. Drink now. (Zekun Shuai)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Apr 2023
The 2021 Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon was produced with grapes from the Puente Alto and Pirque and has 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Syrah and 1% Carmenere blended in. It has 14.5% alcohol, good freshness and integrated oak after 16 months in French barrels and 5,000-liter Italian oak vats from Piamonte. This is again a textbook Cabernet from Maipo, juicy, crunchy, fresh, with the grainy tannins from the variety and the stony soils. There’s purity; it’s clean and young, a little grapey. 780,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2023
Well-done in a medium-bodied style, with fresh and inviting raspberry and blackberry flavors, plus subtle tea leaf and warm spice notes that arrive on a finish marked by slightly chalky tannins. Drink now. 65,000 cases made, 15,000 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)
