When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 27, 2021
Incorporating 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec, the 2018 Merlot sports a dense purple hue as well as a killer nose of cassis, black cherries, spring flowers, tobacco, spice, and even a hint of menthol. Rich and medium to full-bodied, it has a seamless, elegant texture, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is pure class and one heck of a great Merlot as well as a value. Enjoy bottles any time over the coming 7–8 years, if not upwards of a decade or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2018 Merlot is an attractive wine, but it also a bit stern in the early going, with tannins that are surprisingly forbidding. It will be interesting to see if those tannins soften over time, as there is terrific purity in the black cherry, chocolate and spice flavors.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
The 2018 Merlot is a blend of 94% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec. Deep garnet-purple colored, it sails out of the glass with expressive notes of blackberry pie, stewed plums and sautéed herbs plus hints of tar, black pepper and fertile loam. The palate is full-bodied and laden with juicy black fruit flavors, supported by soft, rounded tannins and bold freshness, finishing with a lively herbal lift.

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Benchland Select gives up intense cassis, stewed plums and cedar chest notes with hints of licorice and wild sage. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, the palate has a taut, grainy texture supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing long and mineral tinged.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2021
Polished, fruit-driven style, with creamed plum and warm cassis notes coated in hints of black licorice. Finish is carried by fan-friendly, vanilla-accented toast flavor. Drink now through 2027. 2,359 cases made.

WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2022
Rich in flavors of burnt sugar, honeycomb and mango, this is a hearty barrel-fermented white with full-bodied style and an enduring imprint of oak. Still, its cooler-climate beginnings show through in crisp edges of apple and pear. (Virginie Boone)
SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Direct and fruity, with concentrated apple and pear tart flavors that are backed by lithe acidity. Sage cream accents midpalate, with a finish that lingers with lemon drop notes. Drink now through 2024. 5,826 cases made.

JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Benchland Select is another gem, offering lots of cassis and darker cherry fruits as well as notes of lead pencil and crushed stone. Flawlessly balanced, medium to full-bodied, and as elegant and seamless as they come, it’s already impossible to resist (as are most 2019s) but I’ve no doubt this will evolve for 15–20 years in cold cellars. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, May 5, 2022
Blueberry and blackberry aromas with some violets and lavender Full-to medium-bodied with fine tannins and lots of juiciness. Drink or hold.
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Benchland Select is a supple, juicy wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Jammy dark fruit, chocolate, spice, dried herbs and licorice are nicely pushed forward. The tannins need a bit of time to soften, but this is nicely done. (Antonio Galloni)
