Region / Bordeaux

View more wines from Bordeaux

Bordeaux is known the world over for its exceptional wines, particularly red blends made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, among others. These Cabernets aren't typically the full-bodied Cabs you get from California, but rather medium-bodied wines that emanate elegance and sophistication.

You'll also find some refreshing Bordeaux whites and, of course, Bordeaux's famous dessert wine, Sauternes.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The 2020 Beau-Sejour Becot is a dense, powerful wine. A rush of black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice, spice and sweet oak builds as this towering, vertically explosive Saint-Émilion opens in the glass. This is an especially broad, expansive Saint-Émilion, much of that attributable to the clay in these soils. The 2020 is magnificent in its intensity and overall volume. Superb. (Antonio Galloni)

This has a fantastic finish with crushed blackberries and raspberries and salt undertones. It’s full-bodied, yet really racy and polished with such fine, intense tannins. Love the length to this. Very distinguished and toned. Excellent energy. 85% merlot, 13% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon. (James Suckling)

A terrific performance for an estate on a continuing upward trajectory, the 2020 Beau-Séjour Bécot unwinds in the glass with a deep bouquet of cherries and blackberries mingled with violets and spices. Medium to full-bodied, pure and layered, it’s deep and concentrated, with a vibrant core of fruit, polished tannins and a long, sapid finish. The 2020 is a blend of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, some two-thirds of which was matured in new oak, with the balance in tanks, amphorae and foudres. (William Kelley)

A brilliant wine that’s up with the finest to date from this incredible terroir, the 2020 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot checks in as 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. Revealing a vivid purple hue as well as a drop-dead gorgeous nose of black raspberries, cassis, violets, and a liquid rock-like sense of minerality, it’s medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with ultra-fine tannins and perfect balance. This beauty deserves 4–5 years of bottle age and will evolve gracefully over the following two decades or more. Don’t miss it. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Very expressive, with cassis, cherry puree and plum pâte de fruit notes leaping to the fore with good energy, while violet, red tea, savory and sanguine details add range and guile through the stylish finish. It’s not easy to capture such freshness in this vintage like this version does. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2026 through 2038. (James Molesworth)

The 2020 Château Soutard-Cadet comes from slightly more clay soils as well as older vines. The blend is 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot raised in 70% new barrels. A gorgeous wine, its deep purple hue is followed by a medium to full-bodied, pure, seamless Saint-Emilion with lots of darker cherry and plum fruits, nicely integrated background oak, ultra-fine tannins, and complex notes of smoked tobacco, graphite, and an almost Pomerol-like damp earth character. It will keep for 20–25 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
The 2020 Soutard-Cadet is packed with super-ripe dark fruit, espresso, chocolate and sweet oak. This full-throttle, dense Saint-Émilion is not at all subtle, but it sure is gorgeous. This needs a few years to soften, as the tannins are pretty imposing at this stage. Tasted two times. (Antonio Galloni)

This is dark-fruited with notes of spice, dark chocolate, mocha, cedar and wet earth. It’s medium- to full-bodied with chocolaty texture and firm yet polished tannins. Structured and refined. Attractive and velvety with a creamy finish. Try after 2026. (James Suckling)
RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th May 2021
The 2020 Soutard-Cadet is a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and (for the first time) 5% Petit Verdot. It is aging for approximately 16 months in French oak barrels, 70% new. The alcohol is 15%. Opaque purple-black colored, it charges out of the gate with powerful notes of blackberry preserves, blueberry pie and prunes, plus hints of fruitcake, Indian spices and garrigue, with a waft of licorice. The rich, concentrated, full-bodied palate is packed with juicy black fruits and exotic spices, supported by a rock-solid foundation of firm, ripe, rounded tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long with emerging earthy nuances. Aromas of blackberries, sweet cherries and licorice preface the 2020 Chante Alouette, a medium-bodied, ample and fleshy wine that’s supple, suave and seamless. This charming, gourmand Saint-Emilion is the first vintage produced by the young Antoine d’Arfeuille. (William Kelley)

Aromas of spiced plums and cocoa-dusted blueberries with hints of walnuts and dry earth. Medium- to full-bodied with layers of fine-grained tannins and a chalky texture. Structured and concentrated with a vivid and crunchy dark fruit palate. Pure and succulent with notes of spices and dried herbs with a lingering finish. Try after 2024.
JD91+91–93 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 6/4/2021
I loved the 2020 Château Dalem, and this serious Fronsac should rank with the top wines from the appellation. Ample red and black fruits, tobacco, crushed stone, and background oak all comprise the bouquet, and it’s medium to full-bodied and offers richness paired with elegance, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. Tasted multiple times. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th May 2021
Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 Dalem leaps from the glass with notes of ripe black cherries, juicy blackberries and stewed plums, plus suggestions of garrigue, star anise and chocolate mint. The full-bodied palate is chock-full of wonderfully pure, expressive black fruits, supported by plush tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long with a spicy kick. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, aging for approximately 14 months in French oak barrels, 52% new. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

A solid version, with a core of dark cherry and red currant fruit laced with a taut, chalky mineral edge. Subtle tobacco and warm earth hints dot the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2024 through 2034. 7,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
