I found the 2019 Merlot Signature to be charming and enjoyable, with pretty aromatics (black cherries, red fruits, spice, and cedary herbs), medium body, good balance, and solid length on the finish. Drink up. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Smooth and fresh, this wine opens with ripe raspberry, cherry, plum, and a touch of dark chocolate. On the palate, darker fruit flavors of black cherry and boysenberry emerge with layered herbal notes leading to a long, juicy finish.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Extremely floral and aromatic with violets and lavender throughout. Black olives, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, very fine-grained tannins that run the length of the wine. Goes on for minutes. A greenish undertone comes out at the end with some spearmint, green tea and green olive. About two-thirds merlot. Best after 2028, but already stunning.

The 2019 The Flight, the estate’s Merlot-based wine, is dark, powerful and brooding in demeanor, almost shockingly so. The natural concentration of a year with low yields and small berries is very much in evidence. A rush of black cherry, plum, graphite, lavender and blue/purplish fruit builds as this virile, explosive wine shows off its arresting beauty. In a word: impressive. (Antonio Galloni)

Leading off with the 2019 Flight, which is 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc, this has a beautiful perfume of red cherries, raspberries, and flowers. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the finesse, elegance, and lively style favored at this estate today, with perfectly integrated tannins and both richness and freshness. I love its overall balance as well as length, and it will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and should have upwards of two decades of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/10/2022
The Merlot-dominated 2019 Phoenix (there’s 18% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) offers a great nose of ripe black cherries, tobacco, chocolate, and damp earth, and it’s medium to full-bodied, ripe, and incredibly polished on the palate. It’s one hell of a Merlot, especially at the price. Drink this beauty over the coming 8–10 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2021
Composed of 64% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2019 Phoenix gives up notes of ripe black plums, blackberry preserves and mulberries, plus suggestions of menthol, dark chocolate and spice cake. Medium to full-bodied with plush tannins and bags of juicy black fruits, it finishes with a vibrant, lifted finish. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)
