Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 56202

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Apr 2023
The 2019 Barolo opens to good balance between tart berry fruit and secondary aromas of toasted spice. Spaced out nicely in between are floral tones, crushed stone and rusty nail. The wine shows rich concentration and lots of dark fruit, yet it also gives room for the more nuanced and fleeting side of Nebbiolo. There is a salty or mineral note that adds a feeling of dryness to the polished finish. Some 15,000 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
Alessandria’s 2019 Barolo is gorgeous. Sweet dark cherry, kirsch, cinnamon, rose petal, mind and orange peel lead into a core of soft open-knit fruit. Silky tannins and soft contours add to its overall appeal. The aromatics alone are beguiling, but it is the wine’s overall balance that is most impressive of all. (Antonio Galloni)

Where It's From

Region / Piedmont

View more wines from Piedmont

Piedmont, a wine region on the edge of the Italian Alps in northwest Italy, produces two of Italy's most famous red wines, Barolo and Barbaresco. Both of these wines are made from the Nebbiolo grape, though there are other notable grapes used in the region such as Barbera, Dolcetto, and Moscato and Arneis on the white wine side. Vermouth also hails from Piedmont.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

This wine is a vintage car. Elegant and sleek, a design that fits the modern world, thought its a classic. A power that lurks underneath the hood that when let lose, cannot be bottled again. This is a wine of beauty, depth and power. Dark cherries and plums laced with sweet and tangy spices evolve into blue violets and wild herbs. The palate is rich and giving, with warmed fruit compotes that are hemmed in by vibrant acidity and the most elegant tannins that feel like the perfect leather seat as you prepare to start the engine. Drink Now until there is no more. (Jeff Porter)

Vivid medium ruby color. The wine is finely tuned, with sweet violets, leafy lightness and red currants. Medium-bodied on the palate with violet notes, velvety tannins, refreshing acidity and a long, crisp finish. There is sternness here but personality. Will need time to evolve. (James Suckling)

The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is redolent of dark fruit, crushed rocks, graphite, sage, menthol and lavender all race across the palate, supported by bracing, young Rabajà tannins that make themselves felt. This mid-weight, powerhouse Barbaresco packs quite a punch. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2019 Barbaresco is such a pretty wine. Freshly cut flowers, cinnamon, orange peel, mint and dried cherry give this mid-weight, finely-knit Barbaresco a good deal of aromatic complexity as well as nuance. Silky and inviting, the 2019 is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so, give or take. The 2019 is all pleasure. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2019 Barolo Acclivi is ripe with fresh raspberry, fresh sage, cinnamon, and wild roses. It takes on more depth and concentration and is long and elegant on the palate, with fine tannins and fresh notes of grenadine, dusty earth, and dried flowers. Long on the palate, cleansing and refined, with apricot and fresh citrus, this wine is drinking wonderfully at all its stages and is one of the more exceptional wines in the range for its balance. Drink 2025–2045. (Audrey Frick)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo Acclivi is a very serious wine in this range. It possesses a gorgeous core and tons of supporting structure. I would give the 2019 at least a few years in bottle, as it really needs that time to release its aromatics. I have seen this wine blossom with cellaring, and imagine that will be the case here as well. Today, the Acclivi is quite closed, but time in the glass releases gorgeous red fruit and blood orange character. Although the Acclivi is not as coveted as the Cannubi or Monvigliero, it is an important wine in its own right, as several recent bottles of the 2006 showed. Think of it like Rousseau’s Clos Saint-Jacques relative to the Chambertin and Beze. (Antonio Galloni)

Sandrone Le Vigne Barolo 2019 / 750 ml.

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 60572

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Aug 2023
The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is a historic blend of fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, Vignane in Barolo and Merli in Novello. This year, a fifth site was added to the final blend. It is the Le Coste MGA in Barolo with south-facing exposures and 45-year-old vines in a two-hectare parcel. The backbone of this wine is Baudana, and Merli adds freshness. The wine needs more time in bottle, but already it proves generous and bold with dark fruit, spice and crushed mineral. (Monica Larner)
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is pure and total seduction. Kirsch, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, cedar, dried herbs and orange peel all grace a Le Vigne built on mid-weight structure and energy. There is a feeling of youthful classicism and austerity that is so beguiling. Readers should plan on being patient, though. The 2019 won’t be ready to drink anytime soon, but there is enough fruit to make me think it will be superb, in time. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2023
A tightly wound red, with floral, cherry, iron, earth and underbrush aromas and flavors. Beefy, with the vintage's characteristic austerity and a strong grip on the finish. The tannins lend a compact feel in the end, yet this stretches out on the finish, with a core of pure fruit. Best from 2027 through 2047. 1,500 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
