Where It's From

Region / Piedmont

View more wines from Piedmont

Piedmont, a wine region on the edge of the Italian Alps in northwest Italy, produces two of Italy's most famous red wines, Barolo and Barbaresco. Both of these wines are made from the Nebbiolo grape, though there are other notable grapes used in the region such as Barbera, Dolcetto, and Moscato and Arneis on the white wine side. Vermouth also hails from Piedmont.

Country / Italy

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Bright and well-delineated, exuding cherry, strawberry, rose and earth flavors. Turns firm and tightly wound from midpalate through the finish, showing the austerity of the vintage. There is plenty here, but this just needs time. Best from 2026 through 2045. 3,900 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, July 28, 2023
Plenty of dried flowers with spices such as cloves and dried lavender. Strawberry and orange peel. Medium-bodied with firm and racy tannins and a fresh and firm finish. A little tight and lean. Should soften and open with time. Better in 2026. (James Suckling)

Some grilled meat with some flowers and berry aromas that follow through to a full body with velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Orange blossom. Chewy at the end. Very well done. Needs three or four years. Better after 2026. (James Suckling)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2023
A muscular red marked by forthcoming aromas and flavors of vanilla, tar, resin, cherry, plum and spices. Shows burly tannins that quickly take hold, ending on the chewy side. Best from 2026 through 2040. 1,500 cases made, 417 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Aug 2023
The 2019 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba is strong in terms of bouquet with an immediate whiff of toasted oak or cedarwood that overlaps with the more delicate nuances of Nebbiolo. Those spicy notes are played up in a vintage that tends to offer more concentration and fruit richness naturally. The oak still needs time to integrate, and the tannins are on the dry side. I also need to point out the high 15% alcohol content. This is a production of 17,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)

The 2019 Barolo Acclivi is ripe with fresh raspberry, fresh sage, cinnamon, and wild roses. It takes on more depth and concentration and is long and elegant on the palate, with fine tannins and fresh notes of grenadine, dusty earth, and dried flowers. Long on the palate, cleansing and refined, with apricot and fresh citrus, this wine is drinking wonderfully at all its stages and is one of the more exceptional wines in the range for its balance. Drink 2025–2045. (Audrey Frick)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo Acclivi is a very serious wine in this range. It possesses a gorgeous core and tons of supporting structure. I would give the 2019 at least a few years in bottle, as it really needs that time to release its aromatics. I have seen this wine blossom with cellaring, and imagine that will be the case here as well. Today, the Acclivi is quite closed, but time in the glass releases gorgeous red fruit and blood orange character. Although the Acclivi is not as coveted as the Cannubi or Monvigliero, it is an important wine in its own right, as several recent bottles of the 2006 showed. Think of it like Rousseau’s Clos Saint-Jacques relative to the Chambertin and Beze. (Antonio Galloni)

Mauro Veglio Barolo 2019 / 750 ml.

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 51511

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Aug 2023
The Mauro Veglio 2019 Barolo opens to a medium-dark appearance and concentration. The wine’s more saturated approach is transferred to the bouquet with red and purple fruits, tangy cedarwood, potting soil and pressed rose. This is a classic expression of Nebbiolo that represents a blend of fruit from three villages: Arborina and Gattera in La Morra, Castelletto in Monforte d’Alba and Serralunga d’Alba. An ample 30,000 bottles were released. (Monica Larner)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo is bright, gracious and effusive, with lovely aromatic presence and fine balance. Sweet dried cherry, leather, dried herbs and tobacco all grace this tasty, entry-level offering from Veglio. The 2019 is an absolute delight that just gets better with time in the glass. Like all the wines here now, the straight Barolo is beautifully understated in feel. (Antonio Galloni)

The Produttori del Barbaresco 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is another spectacular release from this cooperative winery that hits it out of the ballpark with each set of new releases. That impressive track record includes this wine that delivers extreme focus, depth and integrity. The bouquet is very clear cut with dark cherry, tart plum, spice and blood orange, but it is also complex and fluid. It offers new perspectives with each swirl of the glass. From a hot vintage, the Rabajà is smooth, powerful and balanced. I would bet on long aging for this bottle. 14,438 bottles were produced.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Dense, featuring fruit flavors of plum, cherry and raspberry, with accents of tar, eucalyptus and iron. A powerful red that needs time to resolve the muscular tannins, with plenty of ripe fruit coursing underneath. Best from 2026 through 2043. 1,617 cases made, 300 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is a potent, searingly tannic wine that will need a few years to come together. Brooding and backward, even for young Rabajà, the 2017 is painfully young today. It will be interesting to see what time brings. Today, the 2017 is a real powerhouse. Black fruit, menthol, licorice, melted road tar, game and menthol develop in the glass, but only with great reluctance.

One of the bigger productions (with 17,744 bottles) in the Produttori del Barbaresco’s portfolio is the 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello. All of the Riservas in this vintage are characterized by especially exuberant and bold aromas, and this bottle is a prime example. Cassis, wild cherry, tobacco, rusty nail and licorice build intensity. The wine is tapered and silky in texture, but it also offers a good amount of power (and 15% alcohol) to carry it through the aging process.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Taut and sinewy, boasting cherry, black currant, grass, iron and tar notes. Powerful tannins drive the finish, which is compact for now. In the end, this is lightly astringent, but has plenty of drive and should find equilibrium with time. Best from 2026 through 2043. 1,580 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a heady, explosive wine. I don’t think I have ever tasted an Ovello from the Produttori with this much heft. The strong mineral and saline accents typical of this site are present, but they are matched pound for pound by notable mid-palate richness and intensity in its fruit. The 2017 is a brooding powerhouse that needs time to unwind.

Incredible aromas of white truffle, meat, wet earth, lightly burnt orange peel and pure fruit. Medium-bodied and very compact, with a block of silky tannins that run through the palate and then come out at the end with a gorgeous texture. It’s very drinkable now, but will age wonderfully. This is a special release. They never made a serious blended riserva in their history. Spring 2023 release. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

This wine is a vintage car. Elegant and sleek, a design that fits the modern world, thought its a classic. A power that lurks underneath the hood that when let lose, cannot be bottled again. This is a wine of beauty, depth and power. Dark cherries and plums laced with sweet and tangy spices evolve into blue violets and wild herbs. The palate is rich and giving, with warmed fruit compotes that are hemmed in by vibrant acidity and the most elegant tannins that feel like the perfect leather seat as you prepare to start the engine. Drink Now until there is no more. (Jeff Porter)

Vivid medium ruby color. The wine is finely tuned, with sweet violets, leafy lightness and red currants. Medium-bodied on the palate with violet notes, velvety tannins, refreshing acidity and a long, crisp finish. There is sternness here but personality. Will need time to evolve. (James Suckling)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2023
The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is redolent of dark fruit, crushed rocks, graphite, sage, menthol and lavender all race across the palate, supported by bracing, young Rabajà tannins that make themselves felt. This mid-weight, powerhouse Barbaresco packs quite a punch. (Antonio Galloni)

Heady aromas that opens with black raspberries, cherry compote, and mixed sweet and savory spices. Subtle floral and herbal notes bolt in to add to the depth of the nose. Broad and rich across the palate with a generous dollop of mixed berry preserves with cracked pepper and dried herbs. The tannins are masterful with a refined nature that calls out the soul of Nebbiolo and shows how well this wine will age. Drink 2027 onward. (Jeff Porter)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2023
The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is perhaps the most complete of the 2019 Riservas at this stage. It offers fine depth, plenty of tannin and nascent emerging inner sweetness to tie it all together. A wine of stature and textural depth, the Montestefano is my early favorite in this lineup. (Antonio Galloni)

Restrained if not dull at first. Very minerally nose with peach peel, orange zest, sweet violets and vermouth-like complexity, Firm tannins, a medium body, crisp acidity and an extracted yet classic finish. Drink from 2025, but it has the potential for aging. (James Suckling)

This red combines cherry, plum, tar, iron, licorice and eucalyptus aromas and flavors, backed by a firm, refreshing profile. Dense and tight for now; however, the long, resonant finish and lingering fruit and white pepper accents show its potential. Best from 2027 through 2045. (Bruce Sanderson)

Jeweled ruby/red in color, the 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is elegant but reserved in its aromatics, with notes of fresh cherries, dried roses, and leather that slowly evolve in the glass to reveal hints of mint and balsamic herbs. It offers great structure on the palate and has a bit of nervous energy, but it has a seamless structure, with ripe tannins and a long finish with a lot of balance and persistence. It also has a great dark mineral accent that snaps along the sides of the palate with notes of blood orange and tea leaf. This is going to take some time to come around and open up. Drink 2026–2040. (Audrey Frick)

The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is a very pretty, silky wine that shows all the signatures of this site in its refined, mid-weight personality.
