Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja Riserva Barbaresco 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 56931

RP96+96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
The Produttori del Barbaresco 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is another spectacular release from this cooperative winery that hits it out of the ballpark with each set of new releases. That impressive track record includes this wine that delivers extreme focus, depth and integrity. The bouquet is very clear cut with dark cherry, tart plum, spice and blood orange, but it is also complex and fluid. It offers new perspectives with each swirl of the glass. From a hot vintage, the Rabajà is smooth, powerful and balanced. I would bet on long aging for this bottle. 14,438 bottles were produced.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Dense, featuring fruit flavors of plum, cherry and raspberry, with accents of tar, eucalyptus and iron. A powerful red that needs time to resolve the muscular tannins, with plenty of ripe fruit coursing underneath. Best from 2026 through 2043. 1,617 cases made, 300 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is a potent, searingly tannic wine that will need a few years to come together. Brooding and backward, even for young Rabajà, the 2017 is painfully young today. It will be interesting to see what time brings. Today, the 2017 is a real powerhouse. Black fruit, menthol, licorice, melted road tar, game and menthol develop in the glass, but only with great reluctance.

Region / Piedmont

View more wines from Piedmont

Piedmont, a wine region on the edge of the Italian Alps in northwest Italy, produces two of Italy's most famous red wines, Barolo and Barbaresco. Both of these wines are made from the Nebbiolo grape, though there are other notable grapes used in the region such as Barbera, Dolcetto, and Moscato and Arneis on the white wine side. Vermouth also hails from Piedmont.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

One of the bigger productions (with 17,744 bottles) in the Produttori del Barbaresco’s portfolio is the 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello. All of the Riservas in this vintage are characterized by especially exuberant and bold aromas, and this bottle is a prime example. Cassis, wild cherry, tobacco, rusty nail and licorice build intensity. The wine is tapered and silky in texture, but it also offers a good amount of power (and 15% alcohol) to carry it through the aging process.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Taut and sinewy, boasting cherry, black currant, grass, iron and tar notes. Powerful tannins drive the finish, which is compact for now. In the end, this is lightly astringent, but has plenty of drive and should find equilibrium with time. Best from 2026 through 2043. 1,580 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a heady, explosive wine. I don’t think I have ever tasted an Ovello from the Produttori with this much heft. The strong mineral and saline accents typical of this site are present, but they are matched pound for pound by notable mid-palate richness and intensity in its fruit. The 2017 is a brooding powerhouse that needs time to unwind.

From another prized vineyard site in Serralunga d’Alba, the Giovanni Rosso 2017 Barolo Serra is balanced and bright, with dark cherry fruit, crème de cassis, baked clay and rusty mineral. Those more ferrous aromas are followed by a pretty hint of blue flower or dried lavender. This is a nicely textured, mid to full-weight Barolo to hold in your cellar.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
The 2017 Barolo Serra is bright, nervy and full of energy. Readers will find a Serralunga Barolo built more on persistence than heft, not a bad thing for a village where the wines can be quite big. Chalk, white pepper, orange zest and spice give the Serra its characteristic brightness.

Ceretto Barbaresco 2017 / 750 ml.

2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 56328

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
Ceretto’s classic 2017 Barbaresco opens quickly and nicely in the glass. That playful accessibility is a trait that I found in many of the Barbarescos from this vintage. Compared to the two vineyard-specific expressions (Asili from Barbaresco and Bernadot from Treiso), this wine offers broad brush strokes of wild berry, spice, licorice and iron ore. That’s exactly the mission of this wine: It provides an authentic portrait of a grape. Fruit represents a blend from various sites, including young vines from Asili and the lower parts of Bernadot. This wine is poised for near and medium-term drinking. (Monica Larner)

Pure flavors of cherry, strawberry and rose highlight this elegant red, accented by cut hay, white pepper and tobacco. It’s solid and long, with a chalky feel on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2040. 500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

This expressive red shows energy backing its cherry, raspberry, earth, sanguine and tobacco flavors. Beefy tannins put a lock on the finish, yet this is long and the ripe fruit is the lasting impression. Best from 2025 through 2045. 800 cases made, 75 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
The 2017 Barolo Cerretta is a dark, ample wine. Black cherry, smoke, leather, licorice and incense lend gravitas to this decidedly brooding, potent Barolo. I would give the 2017 at least a few years in the bottle, as the tannins are pretty imposing today. (Antonio Galloni)

Sandrone Le Vigne Barolo 2017 / 750 ml.

2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 55519

WS9696 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21
According to Luca Sandrone, his key to success in the hot and dry 2017 vintage was resisting the temptation to pick too early, before the grapes reached optimal phenolic ripeness. While some producers began picking in September, the Sandrone team waited until early October, when cooler temperatures refreshed the vines. Le Vigne, a blend of fruit from four communes (Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Novello and Serralunga d’Alba), indicates that the team’s timing was spot-on. The wine’s rich dark cherry flavors are laced with notes of licorice, carob and warm spice, the flavors gliding on smooth, polished tannins in a long, layered finish.
VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo Le Vigne is rich, pliant and so expressive. Even so, I imagine it will need a few years to open up fully. Bright red fruit, rose petal, blood orange and spice give the 2017 its distinctly red-toned profile. Elegant and translucent, the 2017 is very nicely balanced. Vineyard sources are Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli.

Incredible aromas of white truffle, meat, wet earth, lightly burnt orange peel and pure fruit. Medium-bodied and very compact, with a block of silky tannins that run through the palate and then come out at the end with a gorgeous texture. It’s very drinkable now, but will age wonderfully. This is a special release. They never made a serious blended riserva in their history. Spring 2023 release. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is perhaps the most complete of the 2019 Riservas at this stage. It offers fine depth, plenty of tannin and nascent emerging inner sweetness to tie it all together. A wine of stature and textural depth, the Montestefano is my early favorite in this lineup.
