Item#: 59582

JS9898 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, December 1, 2022
Incredible aromas of white truffle, meat, wet earth, lightly burnt orange peel and pure fruit. Medium-bodied and very compact, with a block of silky tannins that run through the palate and then come out at the end with a gorgeous texture. It’s very drinkable now, but will age wonderfully. This is a special release. They never made a serious blended riserva in their history. Spring 2023 release. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2023
Rich, broad and spicy, exhibiting plum, cherry, tar, licorice and eucalyptus aromas and flavors. Offers muscle and grace, with intensity and persistence on the long finish. To be released April 2023. Best from 2024 through 2040. (Bruce Sanderson)

Where It's From

Region / Piedmont

View more wines from Piedmont

Piedmont, a wine region on the edge of the Italian Alps in northwest Italy, produces two of Italy's most famous red wines, Barolo and Barbaresco. Both of these wines are made from the Nebbiolo grape, though there are other notable grapes used in the region such as Barbera, Dolcetto, and Moscato and Arneis on the white wine side. Vermouth also hails from Piedmont.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

This is extremely floral and bright on the nose with lavender, violets and dark berries. Orange peel too. Full-bodied and solid with firm tannins and a tight finish. Better in 2024. (James Suckling)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2023
This red combines cherry, plum, tar, iron, licorice and eucalyptus aromas and flavors, backed by a firm, refreshing profile. Dense and tight for now; however, the long, resonant finish and lingering fruit and white pepper accents show its potential. Best from 2027 through 2045. (Bruce Sanderson)

The Produttori del Barbaresco 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is another spectacular release from this cooperative winery that hits it out of the ballpark with each set of new releases. That impressive track record includes this wine that delivers extreme focus, depth and integrity. The bouquet is very clear cut with dark cherry, tart plum, spice and blood orange, but it is also complex and fluid. It offers new perspectives with each swirl of the glass. From a hot vintage, the Rabajà is smooth, powerful and balanced. I would bet on long aging for this bottle. 14,438 bottles were produced.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Dense, featuring fruit flavors of plum, cherry and raspberry, with accents of tar, eucalyptus and iron. A powerful red that needs time to resolve the muscular tannins, with plenty of ripe fruit coursing underneath. Best from 2026 through 2043. 1,617 cases made, 300 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is a potent, searingly tannic wine that will need a few years to come together. Brooding and backward, even for young Rabajà, the 2017 is painfully young today. It will be interesting to see what time brings. Today, the 2017 is a real powerhouse. Black fruit, menthol, licorice, melted road tar, game and menthol develop in the glass, but only with great reluctance.

The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is a very pretty, silky wine that shows all the signatures of this site in its refined, mid-weight personality. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, cedar, mint and tobacco all grace this classy Barbaresco. The 2019 is classic Asili, with firm tannins from the year. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is perhaps the most complete of the 2019 Riservas at this stage. It offers fine depth, plenty of tannin and nascent emerging inner sweetness to tie it all together. A wine of stature and textural depth, the Montestefano is my early favorite in this lineup. One of the bigger productions (with 17,744 bottles) in the Produttori del Barbaresco’s portfolio is the 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello. All of the Riservas in this vintage are characterized by especially exuberant and bold aromas, and this bottle is a prime example. Cassis, wild cherry, tobacco, rusty nail and licorice build intensity. The wine is tapered and silky in texture, but it also offers a good amount of power (and 15% alcohol) to carry it through the aging process.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
Taut and sinewy, boasting cherry, black currant, grass, iron and tar notes. Powerful tannins drive the finish, which is compact for now. In the end, this is lightly astringent, but has plenty of drive and should find equilibrium with time. Best from 2026 through 2043. 1,580 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a heady, explosive wine. I don’t think I have ever tasted an Ovello from the Produttori with this much heft. The strong mineral and saline accents typical of this site are present, but they are matched pound for pound by notable mid-palate richness and intensity in its fruit. The 2017 is a brooding powerhouse that needs time to unwind.

The 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo is a rich, explosive wine at this level. A rush of sweet red kirsch, mint and cinnamon give the 2019 an exuberant, captivating feel. Aromatic, rich and generous, the Langhe Nebbiolo delivers the goods. Readers should expect an extroverted style. The 2019 was aged in cement and neutral cask. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is redolent of dark fruit, crushed rocks, graphite, sage, menthol and lavender all race across the palate, supported by bracing, young Rabajà tannins that make themselves felt. This mid-weight, powerhouse Barbaresco packs quite a punch. (Antonio Galloni)

Bovio Barolo Arborina 2016 / 750 ml.

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 52768

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The panoramic views from Arborina extend over most of the Barolo appellation with rolling hills and snowcapped Alps. The vines enjoy a sun-drenched position for most of the day. The Bovio 2016 Barolo Arborina draws its fruit from 45-year-old vines and shows extra intensity and definition that comes in part thanks to the advanced age of the plants. However, the wine also magically reflects the elegance of the site with delicate berry nuances followed by licorice, aniseed and crushed stone. Give this release of 3,300-bottles (at least) another five years of cellar aging. (Monica Larner)

Cogno Barolo Cascina Nuova 2016 / 750 ml.

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 53295

VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
Cogno’s 2016 Barolo Cascina Nuova is absolutely gorgeous. Pliant and expressive on the palate, the 2016 has a touch more mid-palate sweetness and texture than in the past, when the wine has been more nervous in feel. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, wild flowers, cedar, sweet tobacco and anise all open up effortlessly. Silky tannins add to its considerable immediacy and appeal. This is such a pretty wine in its peer group and also a terrific example of how attractive more modestly priced Barolos are in 2016.

Tasted next to the Valferana, the 2016 Gattinara Vigna Molsino is much more nervous in feel. Iron, dried herbs, sweet dried cherry, mint, crushed rocks, white pepper and earthy notes give the Molsino a good deal of aromatic complexity to match its intense, saline-infused minerality. Today, though, the tannins and acids are almost overpowering. Readers will find an old-school, classically austere Gattinara that needs 10–15 years to be at its best. The 2016 is an absolute jewel of a wine, but it should be purchased only by readers with either very good genes are a ton of optimism regarding their own longevity.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021
This wine was not produced in 2017, so the next vintage in this mini vertical is the 2016 Gattinara Vigna Molsino. The name “Molsino” is a dialect derivative of the Italian word for “soft,” and it comes from the pretty contours of the hills that characterize the Gattinara landscape and the warm, lightly windy and sunny microclimate that this specific growing site enjoys. Indeed, the wine offers rich fruit flavors of wild berry and blackcurrant with solid structure and firmness. Pretty notes of pressed violet, earth and iron ore also appear. This Nebbiolo plays a hand similar to Barolo in terms of its inner power and its superior aging potential.

Elio Altare Barolo Cannubi 2016 / 750 ml.

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 52575

RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
Fruit for this wine comes from a leased vineyard site in Cannubi (in the comune of Barolo), and the first year of production was 2011. This is a passion project very much spearheaded by Elio’s rambunctious and curly-haired daughter Silvia Altare. The 2016 Barolo Cannubi represents a beautiful departure in the family portfolio. Within this collection of new releases, the Cannubi best articulates the purity of the Nebbiolo grape. Like the other Baroli, it is aged in oak for two years (with 20% new barrique). There is greater varietal purity here with etched and linear fruit tones followed by ethereal smoke, tar and white licorice. I love the mouthfeel too, with that sudden point of cherry sweetness that is followed by elegant texture and acidity. This is a gorgeous release of just 1,500 bottles.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
The 2016 Barolo Cannubi is a powerful, structured wine that is going to need time to come into its own. Cannubi Barolos are often seductive when young, but Altare’s 2016 has quite a bit of tannin that needs time to soften. Even so, all the elements are wonderfully balanced. Kirsch, sweet tobacco, menthol, licorice and dried flowers infuse the 2016 with striking layers of nuance.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2021
There's a pure core of cherry and strawberry in this red, graced by notes of licorice, spice and tar. Balanced and harmonious, with lively acidity driving the long aftertaste. The tannins are suave and mesh well already at this young stage. Best from 2023 through 2042. 125 cases made, 50 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2016 Barolo Riserva Monvigliero is powerful and structured. Its pedigree is evident. A wine of vertical depth and intensity, the Riserva impresses with its nuance and overall sense of transparency. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, dried flowers and licorice build into the wonderfully sculpted finish. This is such a gorgeous wine. (Antonio Galloni)
