When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The 2021 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is wonderfully crunchy and fresh. It offers aromas of cranberry, raspberry and blueberry, plus undertones of garrigue and conifer leaves. The medium-bodied palate features concentrated, wild berry fruit, velvety tannins and energetic acidity. (Erin Brooks)

While this is Siduri’s “regular” Pinot, it’s a real standout. Charming fruit and spice aromas seem perfectly aligned with the complex, layered, intricate flavors that follow. The wine is firm textured, concentrated and impressive, offering everything from bright raspberries to rich black cherries to cedar and clove accents. Best from 2025–2032. (Jim Gordon)

The 2021 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley pours a deep red, with ripe and expressive aromas of classic appeal, including cola spice, saturated black cherry, and damp forest floor. Ripe with red plum that is forward on the palate, it reveals a note of black tea, angular, ripe tannins, and turned earth. It’s ripe and meaty, with a good sense of place. Drink it over the next few years. (Audrey Frick)

This has racy, mouthwatering acidity coursing underneath the core notes of mulberry, bitter cherry and blackberry. Shows the streamlined tang of a coulis, while offering a range of additional bramble, anise and savory tea details through the finish. Delicious. Drink now through 2029. 27,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)

This has nice tension and tannic framing. Full-bodied, firm and lightly chewy with freshness, and spicy character to the ripe strawberry and cherry on the finish. Drink or hold.

Very smooth and fairly rich, this medium-bodied wine offers generous, ripe, black cherries, cinnamon and clove notes on a moderately tannic texture. It shows enticing oak spices along with invigorating fresh fruits. (Jim Gordon)

This powerful Pinot Noir offers intense aromas of black plum, purple flowers and toasty melted caramel. The palate is loaded with herbs and spice, from tarragon, sage and bay leaf to cardamom and anise, as well as a rich boysenberry-jam core.
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020
Deep ruby-red. Oak-spiced cherry and black raspberry aromas pick up a smoky nuance with air. Smooth, sappy and focused on the palate, offering subtly sweet red and dark berry flavors that deepen through the back half. Finishes velvety, gently tannic and long, leaving sappy raspberry and cherry notes behind. In a distinctly lush style but this Pinot doesn’t lack for energy.

This is an extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir, showing kirsch, cola, root beer and anise on the nose. The powerful extraction extends to the sip as well, where black cherry, pie crust and vanilla bean flavors sit atop a thick mouthfeel, with a touch of prune on the finish. (Matt Kettmann)

Ripe, overflowing with red cherry and raspberry flavors backed by luscious acidity and medium-grained tannins. Offers kirsch and allspice notes that coat the midpalate, with chocolate mousse notes on the finish. Drink now through 2025. 10,600 cases made.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2022
A big, bold and superripe style of Pinot Noir, this bottling offers thick aromas of red and black cherry alongside mace and milk chocolate on the nose. The palate is viscous and powerful, with flavors of baked strawberry, cherry, nutmeg and licorice. The structure and acidity rise toward the finish.
