When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Frank Family’s 2021 Pinot Noir is a blend of several vineyards, built around the same primary sources as the Chardonnay and a short (nine-month) élevage in one-third new French oak. Nicely floral, with cinnamon accents to the cherry fruit, it’s medium-bodied, silky and pleasant, an easy-drinking, fun wine, for drinking young. (Joe Czerwinski)

This fun Sauv Blanc brings a smile to the lips, along with flavors of lemon, lime, cut grass, wet stone, citrus blossom, capsicum, lime leaf and lemongrass. The palate offers just a twinge of spritz and a bitter edge, adding textural interest as well. (Stacy Briscoe)

This wine is fresh, bright with aromas of yellow apple, pear, honeysuckle and vanilla cream on the nose. The midpalate has flavors of grilled orange slices, baked pear and green apple, with wildflower honey wafting through the mineral, dry finish. Pair with spicy calamari.

This is quite an approachable Zinfandel with all the classic Zin notes—blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, chocolate, fennel, violets—along with resolved tannins and a vivacious acidity. A drink-me-now wine for sure and one can happily do so with a variety of dishes any day of the week. (Stacy Briscoe)

So concentrated and deep, this massively structured wine performs above its price range. Saturated with blackberries, black currants, espresso and dark chocolate flavors, it is firmly wrapped in a thick layer of tannin. Delicious now, it will become more complex and drinkable with time. Best from 2028–2040. (Jim Gordon)

Cassis, brambles and violets followed by graphite, cigar box and tobacco leaves with blanched nuts and cedar. Full-bodied with crisp acidity and firm yet finely grained tannins. Wonderful concentration and focus. Precisely framed wine with depth and length. Aged for 14 months in 40% new French oak. A blend of 98% cabernet sauvignon and 2% merlot. Try after 2027.
