When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Light in the glass, this clonal blends pops on the nose with crisp raspberry and cranberry as hints of crushed slate and red rose petal add complexity. The landing on the palate is clean and bright, showing joyously ripe berry flavors but also elegant floral tones deep into the finish. (Matt Kettmann)

The 2021 Pinot Noir Twelve Clores is a very pretty, understated wine. Silky, floral and nuanced, the 2021 is all charm. Succulent red berry fruit, cedar, spice and crushed flowers all grace this open-knit Pinot from Morgan. (Antonio Galloni)

A juicy, fan-friendly style, with a ball of red licorice and cherry paste flavors, gilded with red tea and vanilla hints on the easy finish. Drink now. 5,660 cases made. (James Molesworth)

While this is Siduri’s “regular” Pinot, it’s a real standout. Charming fruit and spice aromas seem perfectly aligned with the complex, layered, intricate flavors that follow. The wine is firm textured, concentrated and impressive, offering everything from bright raspberries to rich black cherries to cedar and clove accents. Best from 2025–2032. (Jim Gordon)

The 2021 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley pours a deep red, with ripe and expressive aromas of classic appeal, including cola spice, saturated black cherry, and damp forest floor. Ripe with red plum that is forward on the palate, it reveals a note of black tea, angular, ripe tannins, and turned earth. It’s ripe and meaty, with a good sense of place. Drink it over the next few years. (Audrey Frick)
