Paul Hobbs Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 42769

Moving to the reds, the 2019 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley offers a medium ruby/purple hue to go with a beautiful perfume of mulberries, black cherries, Asian spices, and roasted herbs. Playing in the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, it still brings plenty of fruit, with a great mid-palate and outstanding length on the finish. It’s common in 2019 for the Russian River Valley Pinots to show a beautiful sense of freshness and elegance, and this wine delivers those qualities in spades. It can be drunk any time over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Pretty aromas of red cherries, ripe wild strawberries and rooibos tea. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and well-balanced acidity that keeps the sweet red and black-cherry character going throughout. Added notes of tobacco and vanilla stick come in. Drink now.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th Feb 2021
Medium ruby-purple, the 2019 Pinot Noir opens with broody cranberries and blackberries with touches of earth and charcuterie. The medium-bodied palate is a bit brighter than the nose would lead you to believe, with a grainy, fresh frame and gregarious, spicy fruits. It’s a pretty expression that combines powerful fruit with a lighter frame than might be expected from the Russian River Valley. 7,379 cases produced.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2021
The 2019 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley) is super-expressive right out of the gate. Inky red/purplish berry fruit, lavender, spice and rose petal meld together. Supple and fruity, with tons of charm, the Russian River Pinot has a ton to offer. I would prefer to cellar it for a year or two, as the tannins need time to settle down.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Layered and well-concentrated, this impressive wine stacks up cream, butter, toasted almonds and poached pears for a lavish palate that’s also nicely grounded in appley acidity. It will be eye-opening during cocktail hour and even better paired with fish and shellfish. (Jim Gordon)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 3, 2023
Cooked apple, pie crust, stone, and vanilla bean aromas with hints of flint. Full body. Crunchy fruit with sliced apple. Hints of oak. Dense in the center palate yet firm and focused. Excellent. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

A medium straw/gold hue, the 2021 Chardonnay Russian River Valley offers up fresh and classic aromas of melon rind, lightly toasted baking spices, and ripe apple. The palate is expressive, with a nice balance of ripeness and saline. Softly textured, with notes of crunchy green apple, ripe tangerine, and salty earth, it’s in a great place now and will drink well over the next 5–6 years. (Audrey Frick)

Black-cherry, dried-strawberry, slate and sandstone aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, medium-chewy and bright at the end. The texture and intensity are beautiful and pure. Energy and depth. Drinkable now, but better in 2024. (James Suckling)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2023
Dark and slightly amped up in style, with a coating of dark toast around a core of cherry and blackberry coulis flavors. Keeps a good racy edge though for balance, while black tea, dried anise and potpourri notes fill in through the finish. Best from 2024 through 2028. 976 cases made. (James Molesworth)

From the southern, cooler end of the valley, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville offers a vibrant, lively bouquet of blue fruits, sappy herbs, truffle, tobacco, and hints of gravelly earth. It brings plenty of richness on the palate and is medium to full-bodied, has nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It’s a beautiful, cooler-climate, textured, balanced Cabernet that can be enjoyed today or cellared for upwards of two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Fresh, with eucalyptus and menthol to the blackberries and raspberries. Medium-bodied, bright and crisp with fine tannins and pretty length. Cabernet sauvignon with 10% cabernet franc and a touch of petit verdot. Drink now. (James Suckling)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2022
Ripe and vivid, revealing a long beam of açaí, blueberry and blackberry puree flavors that are polished in feel, with subtle cast iron and savory accents through the finish. A light hand with the toast allows the fruit to sing in this version. Drink now through 2035. 6,083 cases made. (James Molesworth)
RP92+92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
The second vintage of this wine, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville comes entirely from Hobbs’s Nathan Coombs Estate. A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% each Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot, it offers dark fruit notes of blackberry and blueberry, plus hints of graphite and cedar. Full-bodied and rich, it has enough soft, dusty tannins to make it a solid steakhouse option, while the finish is long and tinged with licorice. With just over 6,000 cases produced, it’s the one consumers are most likely to encounter in the market. (Joe Czerwinski)

Bright aromas of pomegranate, orange peel, pepper and sea salt show on the nose of this clonal combination. Zesty, energetic flavors of lemon and orange zest meet with a tart and snappy red-currant flavor on the palate, with oregano and cardamom adding complexity toward the finish. (Matt Kettmann)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - May 2022
Brilliant red. Lively, spice-accented red fruits and pungent flowers on the incisive nose. Taut and focused on the palate, offering fresh redcurrant and strawberry flavors that unfurl slowly through the back half. Finishes long and tangy with repeating spiciness; subtle tannins add a firm grip.

Medium ruby-purple colored, the 2019 Pinot Noir Napa sings of Bing cherries, raspberry leaves and cranberries with hints of rhubarb and damp soil. Medium-bodied and lively in the mouth, it offers plenty of crunchy red berries flavors and a soft texture, going lifted on the finish. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Dec 2022
Medium ruby, the 2019 Pinot Noir Estate offers impressive aromatic layering and detail, evolving as it spends time in the glass from cranberry and burnt orange peel to violet, tea leaves, pipe tobacco and aniseed. The medium-bodied palate is tangy and ultra fresh, with a chalky frame and loads of citrus, earth and herbal touches fanning across the finish. It takes significant time to really open up, and I suspect it has more to give with another 2–3+ years in bottle. (Erin Brooks)
WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2022
Opulent aromas of baked black cherry, star anise, cardamom and thyme make for a rich entry to the nose of this bottling. The palate, meanwhile, is framed with grippy, chalky tannins, giving a firm structure to the raspberry, cherry, dark herb and loamy earthy flavors. Drink through 2039. (Matt Kettmann)
