Sangiovese, alongside Nebbiolo, is one of the quintessential Italian wine grapes. The primary grape used in Chianti, Sangiovese is also blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to create the inimitable Super Tuscan wines that are so revered in wine circles. Additionally, wine lovers also know Sangiovese as the main grape in Italy's phenomenal Brunello de Montalcino wines, some of the best in the world. Italians owe a lot to the Sangiovese grape; wine enthusiasts do, too!

Pair a Sangiovese grape wine with rare steaks, flavorful chicken dishes, or pasta with red sauce. You won't be disappointed!

And, of course, you'll find the best Sangiovese wines right here at WineTransit.com

  9. Tenuta Tignanello Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#71001

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Sep 2019
The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is Sangiovese enhanced with touches of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Renzo Cotarella and the extended technical team at Marchesi Antinori are working hard on perfecting their tannin management, and the beautiful results are evident across this line of new releases from the classic 2016 vintage. The finish is silky and long, and the tannins are never dry. The fruit is evident and bright with wild cherry, rose and Italian garden herb.

The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori emerges entirely from Antinori’s Tignanello estate. Plump and forward, with juicy dark fruit, the Marchese Antinori is done in a decidedly modern, lush style. Mocha, sweet spice, licorice and black plum meld into the creamy finish. The 2016 is attractive, but I can’t help thinking a lighter hand in the cellar might yield a wine with greater finesse and expression of place.

A hefty dose of spicy oak wraps around the black cherry, plum and leather flavors. Muscular and broad, with a lingering aftertaste of fruit, tar and spice. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2021 through 2028. 5,000 cases imported.

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#47542

    SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021
Ripe, sweet cherry and raspberry fruit are accented by floral, mineral and wild herbs in this alluring red. A backbone of dense, dusty tannins provides support, and the ripe fruit returns on the savory finish. Excellent length. Best from 2023 through 2043. 15,000 cases made, 8,500 cases imported.
    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, November 11, 2020
Plum, ripe-berry and floral aromas with hints of sandalwood and fresh mushrooms. It’s full-bodied with firm, ripe tannins and a fresh, crushed-stone finish. A little timid now. Give it another two or three years. Try after 2023.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino shows mineral-laced black cherries with earth tones and hints of tanned leather. It’s soft in texture with a polished display of ripe berries and savory spice, as zesty acids create a juicy expression while slow-mounting tannins collect upon the senses. This turns dry and structured toward the finale, yet with the balance for a long and steady evolution in the cellar. This is really very nice.

The 2016 Brunello spent 3 years in a combination of traditional large Slavonian and French oak casks. Fresh with piney herbaceousness, confected black raspberry, and dried violets, it is medium-bodied and easy-drinking with fine tannins with acidity that lifts off the palate. Notes of fresh citrus, dried flowers, and dusty earth are delicate on the palate. This is ready for fresh drinking now or over the next few years.

Smoke, meat and wet earth to the black fruit. Black truffle, too. Full-bodied, chewy and fruity. Lots of smoky wood. Tight and in need of time to open up, yet it already delivers beautifully polished, caressing tannins. Decant before serving. An amazing wine. Drink or hold.
    WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2020
Classic varietal aromas recalling underbrush, blue flower, wild berry and crushed aromatic herb form the nose. Savory and smooth, the elegantly structured palate features juicy black cherry, cassis, dark culinary spice and tobacco alongside taut refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2022–2036.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2020
A broad, rich style, backed by big, dense tannins. Black cherry, plum, earth and tree bark flavors mingle, riding the dusty tannins on the finish. Terrific length and a ripe core of fruit keep this balanced. Best from 2022 through 2036. 3,166 cases made, 1,200 cases imported.
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Apr 2021
A strong release of 40,000 bottles, the San Felice 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Grigio reveals a dark garnet color with medium rich concentration. The bouquet is centered on dark fruit with some dried tones of earth, tarry smoke and crushed rose. The fruit aromas are on the dry and lean side, and the tannins are also a bit evolved. For these reasons, I suggest a near-term drinking window so that you can grasp the fruit while it is still freshest.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020
The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Grigio da San Felice is a bold, powerful wine. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice, cloves and sweet oak are all kicked up a few notches. This is an especially unctuous, overt Chianti Classico. There is plenty of raciness, that much is clear.
    WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 04/21
San Felice makes two Gran Selezione wines, the fruit for Il Grigio coming from the estate’s highest-elevation plots in Castelnuovo Berardenga (about 1,475 feet above sea level). The blend includes 20 percent of five indigenous varieties, including pugnitello and abrusco, which enhance the wine’s deep color and firm structure. Half the wine aged in large Slavonian oak casks, the remainder in French oak barriques, gaining notes of licorice and anise that enliven the rich dark-cherry flavors.

  13. La Poderina Brunello di Montalcino

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#53681

    RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Oct 2020
The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino by La Poderina does not disappoint. This is a nicely layered expression, with tart berry notes followed by toasted nut, garden soil and dusty mineral or limestone that add pretty contouring and framing to the dark fruit at the core. Those mineral notes recall chalkboard or pencil shaving, and that wide spectrum of aromatic layering also stacks up tall, with lifted and focused intensity. Tight and linear, this is a very elegant wine that shouldn’t be too hard to find with some 70,000 bottles produced.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
Peppery overtones, cranberry and tart cherries define the bouquet of the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino from La Poderina, as notes of olive, leather, pine resin, cumin and crushed stone develop in the glass. On the palate, notes of herbal-tinged black cherry and crushed violets, along with cooling acids and minerals keep things lively. The finish is remarkably long, resonating on the same peppery top notes found on the bouquet, yet with the added kick of zesty spices, brisk acids, and a hint of youthful tannin that lingers on. This is a singular expression of Brunello, which is hard to place within the region or its terroir, but there’s an attractive quality to its unique profile that I enjoy quite a bit.
