Sangiovese, alongside Nebbiolo, is one of the quintessential Italian wine grapes. The primary grape used in Chianti, Sangiovese is also blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to create the inimitable Super Tuscan wines that are so revered in wine circles. Additionally, wine lovers also know Sangiovese as the main grape in Italy's phenomenal Brunello de Montalcino wines, some of the best in the world. Italians owe a lot to the Sangiovese grape; wine enthusiasts do, too!

Pair a Sangiovese grape wine with rare steaks, flavorful chicken dishes, or pasta with red sauce. You won't be disappointed!

And, of course, you'll find the best Sangiovese wines right here at WineTransit.com

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#53043

    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2020
Aromas of blood, iron and raw beef lead off, followed by flavors of cherry, plum and leather. Rich and harmonious, with a dense underlying structure and terrific length. Approachable now, but this should evolve well over the next few decades. Drink now through 2040. 3,500 cases made, 2,800 cases imported.
    JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
Lots of dried peppers here, as well as earth, dried plums and spices. Firm and tangy on the medium-bodied palate, but quite succulent on the finish. Lemon-zest aftertaste. Drink now.

Delicious intensity and focus to this red here with fresh dark cherries, licorice, tea leaves and some eucalyptus. Round and juicy but grainy and suave, this delivers solid, crunchy cherries, across a wealth of sturdy tannins. Full-bodied and medium-chewy on the finish. Drink now.

  9. Tenuta Tignanello Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#71001

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Sep 2019
The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is Sangiovese enhanced with touches of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Renzo Cotarella and the extended technical team at Marchesi Antinori are working hard on perfecting their tannin management, and the beautiful results are evident across this line of new releases from the classic 2016 vintage. The finish is silky and long, and the tannins are never dry. The fruit is evident and bright with wild cherry, rose and Italian garden herb.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2019
The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori emerges entirely from Antinori’s Tignanello estate. Plump and forward, with juicy dark fruit, the Marchese Antinori is done in a decidedly modern, lush style. Mocha, sweet spice, licorice and black plum meld into the creamy finish. The 2016 is attractive, but I can’t help thinking a lighter hand in the cellar might yield a wine with greater finesse and expression of place.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2019
A hefty dose of spicy oak wraps around the black cherry, plum and leather flavors. Muscular and broad, with a lingering aftertaste of fruit, tar and spice. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2021 through 2028. 5,000 cases imported.

  12. Pertimali Sassetti Livio Brunello di Montalcino

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#54094

    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2020
If checking in early, make sure to give the towering 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Pertimali plenty of time to stretch its legs. It’s incredibly shy and backward upon first pulling the cork, coming to life nearly an hour later and never taking a step back from there on out. A beguiling display of spiced orange peels, sour cherry and mint pull you closer to the glass, where notes of cardamom, cinnamon, clove and sage reside. It’s dangerously soft and supple at first sip with fleshy red fruits and sweet spices blanketing the palate; yet beneath this soothing mix, a complex web of minerals and fine tannin slowly saturate. That said, there’s a lively bolt of acidity which maintains freshness in spite of the 2016’s heroic structure. Inner florals resonate along with a hint of white pepper, as it tapers off with classic austerity. This is a gorgeous vintage for Pertimali.
    WE9797 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2021
Red berry, violet and menthol aromas fill the glass alongside a whiff of underbrush in this full-bodied red. The tightly wound palate offers Marasca cherry, licorice, tobacco and a hint of game set against a backbone of assertive, fine-grained tannins. Flashes of bright acidity keep it balanced. Drink 2024–2036.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021
Muddled plum and cherry flavors are enhanced by leather, black tea and iron notes in this sleek yet beefy red. Chewy tannins line the finish, yet this remains lively and finds a nice equilibrium in the end. Best from 2024 through 2047. 4,600 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.

  13. Poggerino Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#50143

    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2019
The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla is a total knock-out. Plush, dark and explosive, the 2016 possesses superb depth and textural richness. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, espresso, licorice, new leather and spice all flesh out in a heady, super-distinctive Riserva loaded with class and personality. The 2016 is fabulous in every way, but I especially admire its explosive energy.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2019
This is pure, well-defined and intense, with cherry, black currant, violet, graphite and stone flavors fused to a solid structure. Balanced and resonant, persisting on the fruit- and mineral-tinged aftertaste. Drink now through 2035. 900 cases made, 450 cases imported.

  14. Il Colle Brunello di Montalcino

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#54182

    WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2021
New leather, scorched earth, ripe berry and camphor aromas emerge on this full-bodied red, along with a heady whiff of violet. Showing the heat of the vintage, the bold palate features baked plum, fleshy Marasca cherry, truffle and tobacco alongside velvety tannins. You’ll also detect the warmth of evident alcohol on the close, but the ripe, chewy fruit stands up to it. Drink through 2027.
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Oct 2020
Caterina Carli’s newest release will appeal to those who love the understated side of this classic vintage in Brunello. The Il Colle 2015 Brunello di Montalcino delivers a pretty playlist of aromas and flavors that beautifully fit the personality of this warm and sunny vintage. The wine showcases lovely shades of dark berry, candied cherry and crushed flowers, and those delicate aromas are delivered with lifted or buoyant intensity. This is slender and graceful in terms of mouthfeel, with tight and elegant tannins. A solid effort overall.

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#38169

    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2019
The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Grigio da San Felice is 80% Sangiovese and 20% other native grapes. Perfumed and lifted, with a touch more aromatic nuance than the straight Il Grigio, the 2015 has much to offer, even if the two wines aren’t all that differentiated.
