Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 60779

SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2023
There’s purity to the cherry, strawberry, rose, mineral and herb aromas and flavors in this solidly built red, which shows excellent balance and length. The muscular finish begs for more time for the beautiful fruit to assimilate. Best from 2025 through 2042. 1,700 cases made, 800 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 21st Sep 2023
You drive through a postcard-perfect panorama of cypress-lined roads and sun-lit farmhouses as you approach the tiny hamlet of Bossi on the southern side of the appellation. The organic Castello di Bossi 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione reveals a dark core of black fruit that is surrounded by flinty mineral, spice and black licorice. This wine should become even silkier and softer with more bottle age. This 20,000-bottle release will hit the market this fall. (Monica Larner)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2023
The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Bossi is laced with dark red cherry, incense, tobacco, game, spice and licorice. Dense and a bit wild, the 2019 has plenty of personality. This really needs quite a bit of air to emerge, but there is plenty of stuffing there. (Antonio Galloni)

Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Red fruit, in the raspberry zone, on both the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with a fresh, tight and racy palate with minimal tannin. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

Perfumed and beautiful with flowers, cherries and raspberries. Forest fruits, too. Full-bodied with extremely fine tannins that run the length of the wine and are wonderfully integrated, spreading across the palate. Lasts for minutes. Better after 2025, but already fantastic. (James Suckling)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2023
Sleek and racy, featuring cherry, blackberry, violet and iron aromas and flavors. This red is more about fruit and finesse, though there’s an element of wild Mediterranean scrub. Firm, with dense, resonant tannins and a long finish. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2045. 5,855 cases made, 600 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Feb 2023
The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo draws its fruit from various sites selected throughout the estate, and for that reason, it is often the most representative wine from Castello di Ama (despite its more approachable price). This vintage is especially interesting, showing a more formal quality of tannins for longer aging potential and softly extracted dark fruit that sets it apart. Vintner Marco Pallanti likens 2019 to 2004 or 2016, some of the best vintages in recent memory. The wine is partially aged in new oak, and the percentage of new barrels used depends on the vintage conditions. This edition sees 20% new oak, medium toast and fine grains. The team is working with lower temperatures during fermentation with more numerous pump-overs for the first couple of weeks, then the wine is left alone. Fresh cherry fruit, blackberry, spice and grilled herb emerge. This is a production of 80,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)

JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, October 5, 2021
Very perfumed with sweet-berry and fresh-flower aromas that already show brightness and beauty. Perfumed. Full-bodied with very well-integrated tannins and pure, vivid fruit at the finish. This is all in finesse and depth. Drinkable now, but better in a couple of years.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2022
The Petrolo 2019 Torrione is Sangiovese with with smaller parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This is a terrific wine with an exciting delivery of fresh and bold fruit that recalls pressed cherry and wild plum. One of the main features of the 2019 vintage is that standout concentration. The wine delivers good texture and richness, yet the intensity is well played and contained. A lingering note of sweetness that I also notice on Petrolo’s other 2019 releases is present here. VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 La Massa is a very pretty wine. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, mint, chalk and spice accents are all nicely delineated. There’s terrific energy driving the 2019. Once again, Giampaolo Motta’s Sangiovese-based blend delivers the goods. (Antonio Galloni)
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, August 8, 2022
This has aromas of sour cherries, currants, lemon leaves and olive stones. It’s juicy and bright with a medium body and fine tannins. Savory, focused and tight finish. Better from 2023.

Aromas of blueberries, plums, roasted meat and dried herbs. Medium-to full-bodied with firm tannins. Chewy and structured on the palate with chocolate notes on the flavorful finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2022
Made with organically farmed Sangiovese, this medium-bodied red has aromas of forest floor, wild berries, camphor and new leather. The savory, elegantly structured palate doles out juicy black cherry, crushed raspberry and licorice as well as a cool smoky note that adds nuance. Drink through 2025. (Kerin O’Keefe)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2022
A chunky style, this red evokes a core of cherry and raspberry, accented by Tuscan herbs, tobacco and earth. Firmly structured, yet stays fresh and long on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2030. 33,000 cases made, 6,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
