Fattoria dei Barbi Brusco dei Barbi 2018 / 750 ml.

Here’s a sample that has not been reviewed by this publication in a long while, or decades really. Packaged with a retro-looking black label and a bold red font, the Fattoria dei Barbi 2018 Brusco dei Barbi is made with Sangiovese. Actually, the technical sheet reads “mostly” Sangiovese, and I imagine the other blending components to be complementary Tuscan indigenous grapes. The wine is initially shy, but with some effort, you get dark fruit, blackcurrant and wild rose. The 2018 vintage is not big on intensity, and to the palate, this mid-weight red offers good freshness. Interestingly, this wine was created as the result of fermentation experiments by Giovanni Colombini in the 1960s and 1970s. (Monica Larner)

Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Country / Italy

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Delicious and elegantly structured, this opens with alluring aromas of fragrant blue flower, black-skinned fruit, eucalyptus and espresso. On the savory, focused palate, bright acidity and lithe, fine-grained tannins accompany juicy black cherry, mocha, licorice and crushed mint. Drink through 2028.

A new wine in this range, the 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Montebuoni is effusive, deep and powerful. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather and dried herbs all open in the glass. Bright saline notes extend the finish nicely. The 2018 offers a compelling balance of fruit richness and energy. (Antonio Galloni)

Here’s an exciting discovery from Castello di Ama. An inaugural vintage, the 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Montebuoni sources its fruit from a vineyard site planted next to the celebrated Bellavista parcel in 1997. Showing a classic Tuscan spirt that is playful and mischievous, this wine is beautiful and bright with loads of ripe and soft fruit flavors, spanning from cherry to plum and violets to potting soil. The wine is medium-bodied and lean, but it shows enough intensity and freshness to make a really nice and lasting impact on the palate. I can recommend a solid 10-year drinking window for this cheerful bottle.

Bright black cherry and blackberry flavors highlight this round, fruity red. Lively acidity and fine-grained tannins are integrated and lend support. A touch of earth graces the finish. Drink now. 3,333 cases made, 250 cases imported.

Wild strawberries, roses, lavender and hints of flowery underbrush form a vividly fruity yet earthy bouquet as the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino opens in the glass. This is round, nearly juicy in character, with ripe red and black berries that cascade across a core of silty minerality. It leaves only a light coating of tannin while tapering off with a flourish of inner sweetness and floral tones, as nuances of licorice slowly fade. This may not be a classic Brunello from Altesino, but I can’t argue with how incredibly delicious it is. (Eric Guido)

Exhibits a strong Sangiovese character, with cherry, earth, iron and leather aromas and flavors. Solidly built and nicely balanced, leaving an aftertaste of savory cherry, iron and tobacco accents. Sangiovese. Drink now through 2028. 835 cases made, 300 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2018 Giodo La Quinta shows depths of dark red fruits on the nose, as black cherry evolves into raspberry and, finally, strawberry, offset by notes of dusty rose, leather and cedar shavings. On the palate, silky textures flood the senses with a sweet and savory expression, further accentuated by salty minerals and vibrant acids, as pretty inner florals amass toward the close. The finish is long and perfumed. (Eric Guido)

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino keeps me coming back to the glass to take in its pretty bouquet of dusty florals, exotic spices and dried strawberries. This is like pure silk on the palate, seamless and supple, with depths of dark red fruit and mineral tones that add a more tactile feel toward the close. Balsam herbs, cedar and tobacco all resonate throughout the long and dramatic finale, as fine tannins frame the experience with youthful poise. As is often the case, Casanova di Neri is a master at creating one of the region’s most balanced and enjoyable “entry-level” Brunellos. (Eric Guido)

Lots of clean cherry and plummy character to the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied with dense, chewy tannins and a long finish. Lovely freshness of fruit here, but give the tannins a year or two to sink in. 40th anniversary bottling. Best from 2024.
