Fattoria dei Barbi Brusco dei Barbi 2018 / 750 ml.

Here’s a sample that has not been reviewed by this publication in a long while, or decades really. Packaged with a retro-looking black label and a bold red font, the Fattoria dei Barbi 2018 Brusco dei Barbi is made with Sangiovese. Actually, the technical sheet reads “mostly” Sangiovese, and I imagine the other blending components to be complementary Tuscan indigenous grapes. The wine is initially shy, but with some effort, you get dark fruit, blackcurrant and wild rose. The 2018 vintage is not big on intensity, and to the palate, this mid-weight red offers good freshness. Interestingly, this wine was created as the result of fermentation experiments by Giovanni Colombini in the 1960s and 1970s. (Monica Larner)

Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino keeps me coming back to the glass to take in its pretty bouquet of dusty florals, exotic spices and dried strawberries. This is like pure silk on the palate, seamless and supple, with depths of dark red fruit and mineral tones that add a more tactile feel toward the close. Balsam herbs, cedar and tobacco all resonate throughout the long and dramatic finale, as fine tannins frame the experience with youthful poise. As is often the case, Casanova di Neri is a master at creating one of the region’s most balanced and enjoyable “entry-level” Brunellos. (Eric Guido)

Lots of clean cherry and plummy character to the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied with dense, chewy tannins and a long finish. Lovely freshness of fruit here, but give the tannins a year or two to sink in. 40th anniversary bottling. Best from 2024.

Spicy, with peppercorns, strawberries, plums, iron, orange peel and a hint of soy sauce savoriness. Juicy, svelte and linear palate with tight, chalky tannins. Clean-cut and racy. Nothing superfluous. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

The Fattoria le Pupille 2018 Morellino di Scansano Riserva is Sangiovese with an addition of 10% Cabernet Sauvignon (drawn from various vineyard sites, including the historic plot that makes Saffredi, the estate’s top wine). Fermentation occurs in stainless steel, just like with all the other estate reds, and this Riserva goes into oak casks for 15 months. The 2018 and 2019 vintages share similar characteristics in that they are both cooler, certainly compared to 2020. This is a solid, mid-weight red that boasts a very pretty and vibrant bouquet. There are floral notes and wild cherry capped by graphite or pencil shavings. The wine reveals a lovely, dark garnet color in the glass, and some of that oak spice comes out as well.

Fattoria dei Barbi is one of the historic, grandfather estates of the appellation, and this important point comes to mind every time I have the honor of reviewing their new releases. The wines always show a distinctly traditional side that is just part of this estate’s DNA, and I’d like to think that this defining characteristic would not change even if a concerted effort was made to do so. Territory speaks loud in the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. The wine offers purity and deep layering with alternating tones of dried cherry, dark spice, cola and crushed flowers. Only 4,000 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)

Though vibrant and expressing cherry, currant, herb and mineral flavors, this is tannic and locked up for now. Leans to the elegant side, with a dense layer of dusty tannins guarding the finish. Be patient. Best from 2026 through 2043. 3,000 cases made, 2,094 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Sweet berries and flowers with sandalwood and citrus-rind undertones. Enticing. Medium-bodied with polished and very refined tannins that caress the palate. It’s long and beautiful. Really delicious now, but even better in 2023.
