Felsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 39813

VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020
The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva is a total knock-out. Sumptuous and enveloping, but with plenty of structure to support it all, the 2017 captures all the best elements of the house style. Succulent black cherry, worn-in leather, smoke, licorice and espresso all build in the glass as the 2017 shows off its curves. More than anything else, the 2017 is a wine of tremendous pleasure.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Aug 2020
The Fèlsina 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga (with 70,000 bottles made) is a rich and sultry expression of pure Sangiovese with dark fruit intensity and a beautiful contouring of spice, leather and tar. This wine hits the intensity nail on the head without the overt over-ripeness that we saw in many of its peers from this hot and dry vintage. I would not recommend an especially long drinking window, but I can enthusiastically recommend this authentic taste of Chianti Classico for near or medium-term drinking. The Riserva ages in large Slavonian oak casks for 12 months.

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

One of the best wines of the vintage, this stunner opens with compelling aromas of new leather, forest floor, perfumed berry and menthol. Full-bodied and elegantly structured, the delicious palate delivers crushed raspberry, ripe Marasca cherry, baking spice and licorice set against firm, refined tannins. It boasts remarkable freshness and balance for the hot vintage. Drink 2025–2032.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Feb 2022
The Le Chiuse 2017 Brunello di Montalcino (made with certified organic fruit) exhibits a silky and elegant profile that only a handful of estates in the appellation achieve with consistency. This is the desired direction of Brunello as a whole I believe, and it’s nice to see these successful results in a difficult, hot vintage such as 2017. The wine is silky and glossy on the palate with wildflowers, berry and forest floor. Production is 15,500 bottles.

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione
2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 57168

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Apr 2021
The Tenuta di Arceno 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Strada al Sasso is a beautifully velvety and rich expression from one of the warmest and driest vintages in recent memory. Dark fruit, blackberry and dried cherry segue to leather, spice and tar. You also get hints of earthy potting soil and blue flower that come naturally to the Sangiovese grape. The finish ends with medium freshness and soft tannins. This is a solid Tuscan red to serve with grilled streak. (Monica Larner)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Vivid black cherry, plum and blackberry fruit notes are framed by vanilla and sweet spices in this polished red. Nonetheless, there are ample tannins as this winds down on the long finish. Best from 2023 through 2036. 800 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

A dense, solidly built red, with wild herb, eucalyptus and soy aromas enveloping the core of cherry and plum fruit. Balanced and lingers nicely on the fruity, savory and tobacco-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2040. 3,208 cases made, 100 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Feb 2022
The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is balanced and bright with lots of luscious primary fruit. The wine opens to soft tones of cherry, dried raspberry, crushed flowers and spice. It moves over the palate with mid-weight intensity, imparting plenty of Sangiovese freshness along the way. The tannins are sweet and carefully integrated in this production of 38,500 bottles. (Monica Larner)
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 4, 2021
Sweet berries and dried flowers with cedar and sandalwood. Medium-to full-bodied with chewy yet fine tannins that are long and persistent. It’s a little tight at the end, suggesting that another two or three years of bottle age will give it a little more open and refined character. Try after 2023.
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021
The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino wafts up with a wild, spunky bouquet that is unique and unexpected but quite enjoyable, as peppery herbs come together with rose hips, raspberries and smoky crushed stones. This is soft-textured and soothing to the senses, as a pure mix of red berries and plums gives way to pretty inner florals. It leaves the palate dry with youthful tension, while chewy tannins hold firm, nicely offset by a refreshing bump of residual acidity. Though a bit on the exotic side, this is a good effort for the vintage that will require only a short stay in the cellar to show its best. (Eric Guido)

Fragrant purple-flower, plum and baking-spice aromas lead the way. The linear palate shows finesse and energy, offering Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, tobacco and cinnamon framed in elegant fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Hold for even more complexity. Drink through 2028.
JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
This is placed very much in blue and dark-fruit territory, featuring an array of dark plums, mulberries and morello cherries. Full-bodied, round and juicy. With a little more freshness and verve this would score more highly. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2023
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Maestro Raro is a lovely expression with deep layers of dark fruit and savory spice that are woven tightly together to form a solid core of primary and secondary flavors. This vintage is especially tight and concentrated, showing terrific balance and freshness and impeccable fruit ripeness that is generous and full. There are no green elements in this vintage. Instead, the fruit is beautifully rich and velvety. (Monica Larner)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Maestro Raro is impressive. Dark, layered and striking in its completeness, Maestro Raro is endowed with terrific depth and sheer resonance. Black cherry, plum, menthol, licorice, spice and grilled herbs infuse the 2019 with considerable depth. (Antonio Galloni)

Beautiful aromas of currants and fresh herbs with some green coffee bean. Medium to full body with firm, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Needs time to soften and come together. Try after 2025. (James Suckling)

A savory red, exhibiting eucalyptus, bell pepper, sage, tobacco and earth notes allied to black cherry and plum fruit. Gains a chewy feel on the finish, thanks to dusty tannins. Best from 2024 through 2035. 750 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020
Fontalloro is exquisite in 2017. It is also such a contrast to the Rancia, as the two wines could not possibly be more different. Fontalloro is bright and vibrant, with more sweet red Sangiovese character than the darker Rancia. It is also incredibly delicious now, even though it clearly has the energy to age for many years. The 2017 is one of the finest Fontalloros I can remember tasting.

The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is incredibly polished and sophisticated. Silky tannins give the 2017 its racy, sleek personality. Over the last year, the 2017 has really settled into a gorgeous place. There is plenty of vintage 2017 intensity, but Rancia is distinctly medium in body and restrained. The wilder side of Sangiovese, one of the signatures of Rancia and Fèlsina more broadly, tastes a bit baked out. I can’t wait to see how the 2017 develops over the coming years and decades.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Aug 2020
Rancia is always one of my favorite wines from this storied appellation (and the Castelnuovo Berardenga subzone). This vintage threw quite a few challenges at the winemaking team, but the Fèlsina 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia emerges intact, intense and beautiful. It is virtually unscathed by the heat and drought that marked this growing season. In fact, that brilliant radiance, linearity and energy of the Sangiovese grape comes through loud and clear. The bouquet is redolent of red fruit, wild berry, toasted almond, violet and potting soil. My score is a little lower (compared to past vintages) in terms of mouthfeel because I found this edition to be a bit shorter and less impactful on the finish, but not by much. It ages in barrique for up to 20 months. This vintage of Rancia saw 46,000 bottles released.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2020
Cherry, plum, juniper, earth and chocolate flavors highlight this sleek, intense red. There is depth and length here, along with a solid structure, yet this will require time to unravel and reveal all its facets. Best from 2022 through 2036. 3,300 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.

Plums, cherry stones, button mushrooms, white pepper and bark on the nose. Lemon and cardamom too. Medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and fine, powdery tannins. Savory. Drink now or hold.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2020 Chiarti Classico Berardenga is a classic Fèlsina wine. It can be enjoyed now or cellared for 10–15 years. Classic Fèlsina savory, floral and tobacco accents play off a core of sweet Sangiovese fruit. This heady, strapping wine has a ton to offer. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous aromatic presence. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022
A charming, harmonious Chianti Classico, this exudes cherry, plum and thyme flavors, with elements of earth and mineral. Delivers dense tannins that exert influence on the finish, yet this remains balanced. Drink now through 2028. 22,000 cases made, 15,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/28/2023
A pure and open wine out of the gate, the 2020 Chianti Classico Berardenga is fresh with aromas of pine sap, anise, and cherry lozenge. Medium bodied with fine tannin and a modest but refreshing finish, this is a fantastic entry point for the Felsina range, for casual drinking with braised meats or Bolognese. Drink 2023–2028.
