Felsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 39813

VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020
The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva is a total knock-out. Sumptuous and enveloping, but with plenty of structure to support it all, the 2017 captures all the best elements of the house style. Succulent black cherry, worn-in leather, smoke, licorice and espresso all build in the glass as the 2017 shows off its curves. More than anything else, the 2017 is a wine of tremendous pleasure.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Aug 2020
The Fèlsina 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga (with 70,000 bottles made) is a rich and sultry expression of pure Sangiovese with dark fruit intensity and a beautiful contouring of spice, leather and tar. This wine hits the intensity nail on the head without the overt over-ripeness that we saw in many of its peers from this hot and dry vintage. I would not recommend an especially long drinking window, but I can enthusiastically recommend this authentic taste of Chianti Classico for near or medium-term drinking. The Riserva ages in large Slavonian oak casks for 12 months.

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

With the first tilt of the glass, you know that this is not your average 2017 Brunello di Montalcino. An enthralling bouquet of spiced citrus peels, roses, sour cherries, crushed rocks and animal musk keeps you at the edge of your seat. This is remarkably pure and delicate, seeming to hover across the palate, yet delivering a vivid mix of ripe wild berries, salty minerals and purple-tinged florals. Beneath, saturated tannins build, yet the expression remains fresh — almost mouthwatering, in fact — as sweet hints of plum and tobacco slowly fade. While the Baricci family doesn’t market their wine as a cru, this is indeed 100% Montosoli fruit from one of the region’s top winemaking families. Bravo.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2022
Aromas of underbrush, toasted nut and eucalyptus shape the nose along with whiffs of blue flower and coconut. The warm, brawny palate offers dried cherry and licorice alongside the heat of evident alcohol. Firm, close-grained tannins provide the backbone. Give the tannins a few more years, then drink sooner rather than later to catch the remaining fruit richness. (Kerin O’Keefe)

This is one of my all-time favorite Brunellos, and although personal tastes are fluid and may change from time to time, there is something timeless and solid about this wine. It’s like a touchstone. The Casanova di Neri 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is graced with a similar interlude of elegant rose or crushed flower that we saw in the annata wine. It appears more prominently here, and with more shape and focused intensity. Make no mistake, Giacomo Neri builds wines for pleasure and sensual impact, and this wine (helped by a hot growing season and 15% alcohol) ticks all those boxes. But it also shows floral elegance and sour cherry freshness that defies our expectations of the vintage.
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, December 5, 2021
Lots of red plums and cherries on the nose with a palate that has a full body, thick silky tannins and a fresh and flavorful finish. The tannins are in good balance against the ripe fruit. Fresh and transparent at the end. Drink or hold.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2022
Expressive, complex and long, despite its compact profile today. Delivers black cherry, blackberry, violet, mineral and tobacco flavors that prevail, while assertive yet refined tannins leave their mark on the lingering finish. Best from 2025 through 2042. 4,083 cases made, 950 cases imported.

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Apr 2021
The Tenuta di Arceno 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Strada al Sasso is a beautifully velvety and rich expression from one of the warmest and driest vintages in recent memory. Dark fruit, blackberry and dried cherry segue to leather, spice and tar. You also get hints of earthy potting soil and blue flower that come naturally to the Sangiovese grape. The finish ends with medium freshness and soft tannins. This is a solid Tuscan red to serve with grilled streak. (Monica Larner)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Vivid black cherry, plum and blackberry fruit notes are framed by vanilla and sweet spices in this polished red. Nonetheless, there are ample tannins as this winds down on the long finish. Best from 2023 through 2036. 800 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino lifts up with a deeply intriguing bouquet that mixes balsam herbs with flowery undergrowth, bright sour cherries and a hint of grapefruit peels. It’s silky and round in feel, offering vibrant acids that enliven the red and black berries found within. This leaves salty minerals and sweet tannins to linger, but also keeps the mouth watering through the long and surprisingly zesty finale. While I wouldn’t call this a classic Brunello, it is a successful expression of the 2017 vintage.

The 2016 Primamateria, the estate’s Sangiovese/Merlot blend, is another exceptional wine in this range. Raspberry jam, spice, new leather, dried flowers and mocha lend striking aromatic nuance. The 2016 is sleek, ripe and exceptionally polished, not to mention flat out delicious.

Fragrant purple-flower, plum and baking-spice aromas lead the way. The linear palate shows finesse and energy, offering Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, tobacco and cinnamon framed in elegant fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Hold for even more complexity. Drink through 2028.
JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
This is placed very much in blue and dark-fruit territory, featuring an array of dark plums, mulberries and morello cherries. Full-bodied, round and juicy. With a little more freshness and verve this would score more highly. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is incredibly polished and sophisticated. Silky tannins give the 2017 its racy, sleek personality. Over the last year, the 2017 has really settled into a gorgeous place. There is plenty of vintage 2017 intensity, but Rancia is distinctly medium in body and restrained. The wilder side of Sangiovese, one of the signatures of Rancia and Fèlsina more broadly, tastes a bit baked out. I can’t wait to see how the 2017 develops over the coming years and decades.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Aug 2020
Rancia is always one of my favorite wines from this storied appellation (and the Castelnuovo Berardenga subzone). This vintage threw quite a few challenges at the winemaking team, but the Fèlsina 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia emerges intact, intense and beautiful. It is virtually unscathed by the heat and drought that marked this growing season. In fact, that brilliant radiance, linearity and energy of the Sangiovese grape comes through loud and clear. The bouquet is redolent of red fruit, wild berry, toasted almond, violet and potting soil. My score is a little lower (compared to past vintages) in terms of mouthfeel because I found this edition to be a bit shorter and less impactful on the finish, but not by much. It ages in barrique for up to 20 months. This vintage of Rancia saw 46,000 bottles released.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2020
Cherry, plum, juniper, earth and chocolate flavors highlight this sleek, intense red. There is depth and length here, along with a solid structure, yet this will require time to unravel and reveal all its facets. Best from 2022 through 2036. 3,300 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.

VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020
Fontalloro is exquisite in 2017. It is also such a contrast to the Rancia, as the two wines could not possibly be more different. Fontalloro is bright and vibrant, with more sweet red Sangiovese character than the darker Rancia. It is also incredibly delicious now, even though it clearly has the energy to age for many years. The 2017 is one of the finest Fontalloros I can remember tasting.

RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021
One of the best vantage points for drinking Chianti Classico is at the entry level. A wine like the Fèlsina 2019 Chianti Classico Berardenga offers so much freshness and cheerful, easy-drinking appeal. It’s a terrific partner to pizza, pasta or basically anything on the trattoria menu tonight. This wine shows bright cherry flavors and redcurrant with pressed flowers and some tangy blood orange. It is steady and generous, with lots of bright primary intensity. (Monica Larner)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021
This is lively, its cherry, strawberry and orange peel flavors picking up earth and woodsy accents. Firm tannins sweep in on the finish, yet this stays fresh and long. A touch more austere than many ’19s. Drink now through 2024. 23,333 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
