Where It's From
Region / Tuscany
There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.
Country / Italy
Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.
Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino is drop-dead gorgeous, slowly unfolding in the glass; at first smokey and herbal, yet gaining depths of dark red fruits and sweet spice over time. It’s silky-smooth in texture, contrasted by savory wild berry, plum and zesty acids, with purple-tinged inner florals amassing toward the close. Licorice and hints of black currant linger, along with a coating of round tannins, making for a lightly structured yet still highly enjoyable finale. (Eric Guido)
Wild roses, cassis and lavender open the bouquet of the 2019 Rosso di Montalcino. Uccelliera offers a terrific Rosso in this vintage with slightly more concentration and volume compared to previous editions. This wine has a pretty floral component that underlines the delicate, elegant and streamlined personality of this classic Rosso. Production is 26,500 bottles and, interestingly, 350 magnums. (Monica Larner)

A bright yet firmly structured Chianti Classico, with iron, leather, almond and floral accents surrounding a core of cherry fruit. Sleek and intense, with a lingering finish echoing cherry, red berry and mineral notes. Best from 2024 through 2040. 4,500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
Aromas of sweet berries, crushed stones and violets follow through beautifully to a medium-bodied with fine, integrated tannins and a pretty finish. Crisp and crunchy with structure. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
Here’s a wine I highly recommend. Packaged with a black label, the Volpaia 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva is certified organic Sangiovese from a site with sandstone soils that rises up to a cool 600 meters above sea level in Radda in Chianti. These well-priced results are perfumed and vibrant with black fruit, crushed stone and wild rose. I especially appreciate those drying mineral tones that match the wine’s elegant, mid-weight mouthfeel. Some 60,000 bottles were released. (Monica Larner)

The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna Barbischio is a gorgeous wine from Maurizio Alongi. Bright and translucent, with terrific depth, the 2019 has much to recommend it. Dried herbs, rose petal, mint, sage and lavender add nuance to this rugged Chianti Classico from hillside vineyards in Gaiole. (Antonio Galloni)

Fragrant purple-flower, plum and baking-spice aromas lead the way. The linear palate shows finesse and energy, offering Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, tobacco and cinnamon framed in elegant fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Hold for even more complexity. Drink through 2028.
This is placed very much in blue and dark-fruit territory, featuring an array of dark plums, mulberries and morello cherries. Full-bodied, round and juicy. With a little more freshness and verve this would score more highly. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

A well-defined and typical Chianti Rufina with aromas and flavors of berries and cherries, as well as darker, savory notes of bark and dried herbs. Medium body and grainy tannins that have a dusty-oak coating that absorbs the fruit flavors nicely and gives a long, firm and a slightly bitter, licoricy finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but will be better integrated in 2023.
Made with organically farmed grapes—90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Colorino—this opens with aromas of black-skinned berry, underbrush and leather. The fragrant, balanced palate offers black cherry, clove and licorice alongside firm, polished tannins. Drink 2023–2030. (Kerin O’Keefe)
