Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Country / Italy

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

This has a toasty character with hints of cardamom, cloves and crushed walnuts with ripe red fruit, plum skins and red flowers in the background. It’s full-bodied with firm, chalky tannins and steady acidity to give it freshness. A little bit of toasted oak at the end. Lengthy and spiced with a crunchy finish. Better after 2025. JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, August 8, 2022
Aromas of crushed stones, dark berries and blueberries follow through to a medium to full body with creamy tannins and a medium-chewy finish. Chocolate at the end. Sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Two or three years of bottle age will bring this around nicely. Drink after 2024. (James Suckling)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Feb 2023
A blend of 44% Sangiovese, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, the 2019 Modus is a very contemporary wine with soft extraction, lots of dark fruit and gentle tannins spread over a full-bodied style. You get sunshine and warm Tuscany in the glass, and although this blend of grapes tells you less about its territory, it gives you a generous glass to pair with grilled meats. Black cherry is followed by pencil shaving, sweet earth and barbecue spice. Only the 15% alcohol content is a little too much. (Monica Larner)

Montepeloso Eneo 2019 / 750 ml.

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 48923

VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Eneo is a wine of notable focus and drive. Black cherry, leather, tobacco, incense, smoke, dried herbs and gravel infuse the 2019 with striking layers of complexity. Firm but well-integrated tannins give the wine energy as well as proportion. There’s a ton to like, but readers need to be patient, as the 2019 needs time to soften. This is an especially dark, at times somber, vintage of Eneo.

VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2023
Brooding yet intense, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino bursts from the glass with a wave of autumnal spices, crushed cherries, cedar shavings and steeped plums lifted by pine hints. This is deeply textural, elegant and refined, with a dense wave of ripe wild berry fruits, all guided by vibrant acidity, offset by oranges and balsam herbs. It finishes grippy and extended with a black hole of tension and a sweet and sour sensation that lingers on and on as crunchy tannins resonate throughout. The 2019 is youthfully backward today, yet there’s a balance that can’t be denied, especially as I watched it open up over twenty-four hours. This is a total pleasure to taste. Bury the 2019 deep in the cellar. (Eric Guido)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Dec 2023
The Uccelliera 2019 Brunello di Montalcino offers ripe fruit, a note of cooked blackberry and pomegranate juice. Along with oak spice and dried bay leaf, there is a spot of creaminess on the mid-palate that recalls cheese rind or aged chèvre with a crust of black pepper and thyme. That note blows off, however, and the wine returns to dried cherry with a medicinal or herbal twist. There’s a lot going on. The wine needs more time in bottle to address the fine, chalky tannins. It is elegant now but poised to improve. Production is 36,000 bottles plus larger formats. (Monica Larner)

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2023
The beautiful Fattoria le Pupille 2019 Morellino di Scansano Riserva is Sangiovese cut with about 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit represents a special selection taken from the estate’s classic Morellino vineyards. The Riserva sees 15 months in large oak casks and one year in bottle, giving it more time to flesh out and integrate. The wine shows rich density on the mid-palate with aromas of black cherry, spice and earth. The upcoming 2020 vintage was quite hot for a grape such as Sangiovese, and the 2021 growing season was even hotter in this corner of Maremma. (Monica Larner)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Morellino di Scansano Riserva offers up sweet red cherry, tobacco, spice, leather, mint and incense. Medium in body, with lovely aromatic nuance, the 2019 is already showing some signs of development. For that reason, I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022
Boasts black cherry and kirsch flavors that permeate the glycerol texture, shaded by black pepper, earth and sage. Firmly structured yet balanced, with dusty tannins on the finish. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2027. 3,320 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Crushed stones with black cherries and fresh flowers. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a flavorful finish. Still so young and fruity with wonderful energy. Give it another two or three years, if you can bear to wait.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Feb 2023
The Riservas from across the appellation are showing very well in 2019. This wine is no exception. The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva (which is a blend of 90% Sangiovese with Canaiolo and Colorino aged in different-sized oak barrels for up to 18 months) offers pretty richness and concentration. The wine’s ample volume is fleshed out with dark fruit, spice and blue flower. It should be fun to try this wine in five years’ time, when it loses its baby fat. Happily, production is very generous, with 200,000 bottles made. (Monica Larner)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva is a dark, brooding wine. Black cherry, incense, tobacco, menthol, licorice, scorched earth and savory undertones all take shape in the glass. There’s real intensity here, not to mention tons of character. There are many beautiful wines in this range, but for the money, it is pretty hard to beat this Riserva. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022
A sleek, tightly wound red, with black cherry and blackberry fruit shaded by iron, herbs and tobacco. Linear in profile and vibrant, with a long, slightly chewy finish. Needs a year or two. Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino. Best from 2024 through 2037. 26,000 cases made, 17,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
