Where It's From
Region / Tuscany
There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.
Country / Italy
Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.
Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Here’s a terrific expression from Tuscany, a wine with a contemporary flare. With small percentages of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in this otherwise Sangiovese-based wine, the Tenuta Casenuove 2019 Chianti Classico flaunts bright cherry and bold fruit definition. It is intermingled with wild bramble that reflects the landscape of Panzano in Chianti with its pretty mix of vineyards and forests. Hints of smoke and scorched earth fill in the rear. Production is 59,500 bottles, hitting the market now. (Monica Larner)

The Casanova di Neri 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows thick fruit fabric with stitchings of underbrush, pressed rose, bright cherry, tobacco and balanced oak spice. This wine definitely has a special groove. It offers a ripe, round texture with good acidity followed by fine, chalky tannins. This is impressive quality for 109,600 bottles produced. In fact, this is one of the best village Brunellos from Giacomo Neri and his family made so far. (Monica Larner)
The core of ripe cherry fruit is complemented by woodsy, mushroom, iron, spice and saline flavors in this intense red, with a long, resonant aftertaste. Though balanced, this could benefit from a few more years to really hit its sweet spot. Best from 2026 through 2042. 9,133 cases made, 2,500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
Redcurrants and lavender followed by layers of dried herbs and spices. Full-bodied and opulent on the palate with chewy tannins. Persistent long finish with some citrusy undertones. Yet young, healthy and concentrated. Very attractive now and in the future. (James Suckling)

There’s purity to the cherry, strawberry, rose, mineral and herb aromas and flavors in this solidly built red, which shows excellent balance and length. The muscular finish begs for more time for the beautiful fruit to assimilate. Best from 2025 through 2042. 1,700 cases made, 800 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
Lots of blackberry, black-cherry and lavender aromas with some sage. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Linear and polished red. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
You drive through a postcard-perfect panorama of cypress-lined roads and sun-lit farmhouses as you approach the tiny hamlet of Bossi on the southern side of the appellation. The organic Castello di Bossi 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione reveals a dark core of black fruit that is surrounded by flinty mineral, spice and black licorice. This wine should become even silkier and softer with more bottle age. This 20,000-bottle release will hit the market this fall. (Monica Larner)
Woodsy aromas of pine needles and underbrush blend with spices and herbs before a distinctive note of anise takes over on the nose. On the palate, herbaceous, earthy flavors remain dominant, joined by black cherries and finishing with the citric, astringent bite of orange pith. (Danielle Callegari)
The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Bossi is laced with dark red cherry, incense, tobacco, game, spice and licorice. Dense and a bit wild, the 2019 has plenty of personality. This really needs quite a bit of air to emerge, but there is plenty of stuffing there. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2020 Valdisanti is superb in this vintage. Rich, dark and sumptuous, this blend is alluring right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, grilled herbs, leather, new oak, licorice and mocha are nicely dialed up. The 2020 is opulent, not at all heavy. The 2020 is a gorgeous Valdisanti. (Antonio Galloni)
The Tolaini 2020 Valdisanti is a 50-50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from a vineyard called Tenuta San Giovanni. This is an especially intense and smooth red blend that shows impressive and seamless integration. You get the dark intensity of both grapes used in the blend framed by the sweet spice and toast of aging in French oak. This vintage carries especially broad shoulders and offers extra richness. Some 55,000 bottles are hitting the market in the fall of 2023. (Monica Larner)
An intense red, with graphite, spice and tar aromas complementing concentrated blackberry, blueberry, wild rosemary and mineral flavors. Reveals burly tannins that are assertive, yet not overly astringent at this youthful stage. Compact finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2038. 4,500 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
Primary Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon

This robust red shows nice balance between the black currant, plum, licorice, cedar and spice flavors and the dense matrix of tannins. Starts out fluid, before the dusty tannins take hold on the finish. This is long, so have faith. Best from 2026 through 2043. 10,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2019 Al Passo is rich, ample and generous. Healthy dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon turbocharge Sangiovese, adding depth and structure. Red-fleshed Sangiovese fruit emerges over time. The 2019 is deep and quite fleshy, but it also has a good deal of brightness to balance some of its more overt leanings. (Antonio Galloni)
An expressive, fruity style, this red features cherry, raspberry, plum, floral and wild herb aromas and flavors. Dense and lively, with a lingering aftertaste of red fruit and herbs. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2023 through 2036. 10,000 cases made, 7,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
