A big, heady Amarone with dense aromas and flavors of dried black fruit, together with hints of ground nuts and a whiff of fresh oak and balsamic. Full-bodied with robust, fine tannin that is staring to integrate with the intense fruit. But it will take a while yet. Drink from 2024.

The Santi 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Santico is an accessible expression of 80% Corvina and 20% Rondinella from a balanced and elegant vintage. The wine delivers the basics and doesn’t venture far beyond. It offers a pretty assembly of dark fruit, spice, tar and campfire ash. Fruit is sourced from some of Santi’s historic growing sites in San Pietro in Cariano, Fumane and Marano between 150 and 300 meters in elevation. Production is an ample 75,000 bottles. The 2016 Amarore della Valpolicella Morandina is dark and youthfully understated in the glass, as crushed rose petals and store dust give way to red currants. This is silky-smooth, nearly velvety in feel, with masses of mineral-tinged black cherry and spice contrasted by a twang of sour citrus. The 2016 finishes with outstanding length and depth yet is also remarkably fresh, leaving hints of hard red candy and the slightest touch of bitter cocoa. The Amarone of Prà is always so unique but in the best possible way. The 2016 is a total gem but needs cellaring to come fully into focus. (Eric Guido)

A savory and complex expression of Amarone with some dried cherries, red dates, stewed herbs, orange peel, tobacco and white pepper. Some bold green peppercorn, too. A svelte delivery of Amarone with a medium body, showing tobacco, cedar and chocolate on the palate. Long, cedary finish. Drink or hold.

This elegant red is medium- to full-bodied, with creamy tannins providing a fine frame for flavors of brambly red currant and blackberry fruit, pine, orange peel and crushed pink peppercorn. A subtle, savory overtone of cured tobacco and smoky bacon fat echoes on the fresh finish. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Oseleta. Drink now through 2030. 833 cases made, 250 cases imported. The 2016 Amarone Clássico Riserva di Costasera is unexpectedly fresh and lifted, with dusty rose, tobacco and sweet herbs giving way to medicinal cherries and blackberries. This is dark and intense yet energetic, with saturating red berries and spices giving way to a coating of rounded tannins toward the close. It turns slightly balsamic and with a bitter twang through the incredibly long finale, leaving wood tones and hints of mocha. The 2016 is an intense and savory Riserva di Costasera, and you can’t even tell that it’s one of the higher residual sugar wines on the table at 8.8 grams per liter. (Eric Guido)

A sweet, perfumed nose of blackberries, candied dark cherries, sweet coffee, flowers, dates and dark chocolate. It’s full-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Full and structured, yet it’s contained and balanced. The bright and firm mid-palate contrasts with the racy, bittersweet finish. The sweet, coffee-candy note is still prominent now. Better wait for two years before approaching. Try in 2024.

A smooth, refined texture reveals rich flavors of dried plum, pomegranate and molasses woven with exotic spices, yet this Amarone remains balanced and vinous, with a long and savory finish that earns it a place at the dinner table.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2023
A high-toned, floral red, with flavors of cherry coulis and steeped raspberry laced with dark chocolate, woodsy spices and smoke. Reveals orange peel juiciness to the flavor range, with fine-grained tannins firming the moderate finish. Corvina, Rondinella, Oseleta and Molinara. Drink now through 2028. 8,000 cases made, 800 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

Pleasant red with some decent, juicy plum and berry character. A little bit too fluid on the palate, but nice while it lasts. Drink now. (James Suckling)
