Santi Santico Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 24053

JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, September 6, 2022
Smoked dark cherries, dried meat and some muddled, herby undertones to the dark chili chocolate and wet stones. Bittersweet with some tart cherries and tight, fine-grained tannins before a medium finish. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
WE8787 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2022
The wine has aromas of wild red and blackberry pie filling, forest floor and savory spices. The palate’s tannins are dusty and rustic with the lush fruit notes of red and blackberry carrying the wine to the finish, which is a tad short. (Jeff Porter)

Needs air to bring out the intense, bright red berries with some dates and spicy, meaty notes. Full-bodied with a tight but forward-driven palate, spurred along by clean acidity and firm, fine tannins. It’s all there, but needs time to mellow out. Try from 2023.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2022
The 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico opens with a minty freshness, as bright red berries and dusty dried flowers form in the glass. This is silky and saline in character, with depths of dark red fruits and spices all energized by saline-infused acidity, making for a highly drinkable expression as it develops inner rose tones toward the close. It’s structured and staining with a bitter twang of dark fruits and savory herbs. While you can still drink this today, the best is yet to come. A strapping and deep Amarone.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Dec 2021
From a very hot and dry vintage, the Tommasi 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is supple and round with plenty of soft fruit at its core. The vintage is less complex, with less depth, but it does deliver sweet tones of cherry, ripe plum and crème de cassis. Light shadings of spice and tobacco help to flesh it out. Tommasi’s classic Amarone is a blend of 50% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, 15% Rondinella and 5% Oseleta. The grapes are sourced from the Le Groletta and Conca d’Oro vineyards, which have medium-rich limestone soils and lots of fossils. (Monica Larner)

A lively, medium- to full-bodied red, round and well-balanced, offering an enticing range of steeped cherry and fig cake flavors with accents of dried thyme, pomegranate and espresso. Creamy, lightly spiced finish. Corvina, Rondinella, Corvinone and Oseleta. Drink now through 2026. 29,000 cases made, 2,500 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

Dried strawberries and raspberries on the nose, together with hints of dried herbs, such as tarragon. There’s also an interesting, deep-set truffle-like note that adds complexity and interest. Full-bodied with intense flavor and a mix of fine oak and fruit tannin that pushes the length, but dries a little at the end. Feels a bit like a riserva. Drinkable now, but needs a year or two to absorb the tannin and oak influence. Best from 2025. (James Suckling)

Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Valpantena 2017 / 750 ml.

Amarone della Valpolicella Valpantena
2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 44820

SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2021
This elegant red is medium- to full-bodied, with soft, plush tannins. It features flavors of baked black cherry and dried raspberry, with savory accents of thyme and tobacco. A backbone of fresh, orange peel acidity keeps it lively and not too robust on the palate, driving minerally smoke and spice notes on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2027. 8,000 cases made, 800 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Dec 2021
From the Valpantena, one of several major valleys that run north to south from the mountains to the plains in Valpolicella, comes this unique wine. Indeed, the Bertani 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Valpantena offers you one of the only viable ways to taste fruit from this beautiful and largely unexplored valley north of Verona. There is a lot of ripeness here (almost too much) with plenty of textural richness to boot. The wine finishes with prune and dark plum that are in line with this hot and dry vintage. The tannins and the mouthfeel are soft and supple. Go with a near or medium-term drinking window for this bottle. (Monica Larner)

The 2017 Amaronte della Valpollcella Valpantena is dark and rich, pulling me closer with notes of tobacco and sage that give way to medicinal cherry and hints of camphor. It’s more vibrant than anticipated, with silky textures and medium bodied-weight, as tart red berries and minerals saturate the senses. This becomes quite perfumed with roses and violets through the finale, and it leaves a coating of fine tannins and hints of dark chocolate to linger. I love the savory balance here. Nicely done. A really fresh and well-balanced Amarone here, with tapenade, ripe but fresh blackberries, chili chocolate and some red berries, too. This is tight and juicy, with a medium-to full-bodied palate and a long, fruity finish. A modern, fresh expression of Amarone that shows immense drinkability, but still pretty serious. Not super-concentrated, but shows restraint and balance. Drink or hold.
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2022
The wine is quite reserved on the nose to start, but with a decant it opens up nicely. The wine has aromas of red-cherry preserve, ripe plum, clove, anise and cinnamon. The palate is elegant with notes of dried leaves, dark chocolate and dark cherries. The tannins are already well integrated, giving the wine a magnificent texture. Expect to enjoy this for a while Best from 2025–2035. (Jeff Porter)

The 2017 Amarone Classico Costasera is intense, with masses of dried black cherries and mocha complicated by spiced citrus rinds and a dusting of cocoa. This is a total pleasure on the palate, seamlessly silky and elegant with a spicy core of red fruits. The 2017 tapers off with tremendous length, staining the palate in youthful concentration yet remaining completely fresh. (Eric Guido)

A medium- to full-bodied red, with savory notes of fresh earth, tobacco and smoke on the nose, which underscore the palate's crushed black currant, black cherry and dark chocolate flavors. Firm finish. Corvina, Molinara and Rondinella. Drink now through 2027. 100,000 cases made, 13,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

There’s a spicy citrus twang that enlivens the dusty black raspberries and exotic spices that waft up from the 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. It’s silken and deeply textural, with a bitter tinge of cinnamon and cacao up front that gives way to sweet wild berries and balsam herbs. There’s a wild air of autumnal spices and inner florals within, as well as saline-minerals that add salty depths. The 2017 finishes incredibly long but also youthfully tense and concentrated. There is a bit of heat that pokes out, but doesn’t get in the way, as nuances of rose and dark chocolate slowly fade. This beastly Amarone will require some cellaring to come fully into focus.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2022
Dark and tangy, this medium- to full-bodied red has hints of crushed pine, violet and mandarin orange peel accenting blackberry fruit, minerally earth and iron. Well-spiced and expressive on the chewy finish. Corvina, Rondinella, Oseleta and Croatina. Drink now through 2027. 12,500 cases made, 2,450 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
