Syrah, or Shiraz, is most popularly known these days as the benchmark grape of Australia's wine boom in the late 1990's. Indeed, you'll still find some of the world's best Syrah wines (and best wines, in general), such as the legendary Penfolds Grange, in Australia. But, Syrah's modern history begins and continues in France's Northern Rhône region, where it's the primary grape in blends from Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage, and other celebrated districts. You'll also find terrific Syrah wines from California, South Africa, Chile, and other regions.
Much like cabernet, Shiraz (Syrah) creates robust, deeply-colored wines that are rich and extraordinary. Often quite tannic and with a weighty mouthfeel, you'll want to pair Syrah wines with red meats like lamb and venison, or barbecued foods with a good char.

JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - March 22, 2021 Based on 74% Syrah and 26% Grenache brought up in in a combination of concrete tanks (for the Grenache) and one year old demi-muids (for the Syrah), the 2018 Cotes Du Roussillon Bastide Miraflors is a knockout bottle of wine. It offers loads of black fruits, roasted herbs, peppered meat, violets, and bacon fat as well as full-bodied richness, a round, opulent style, ripe tannins, and a blockbuster finish. It’s one of the finest values out there. (Jeb Dunnuck)Premier SelectPremier Select wines are handpicked by our staff from amongst thousands of wines for their exceptional quality. RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Feb 2022 Here’s a sample that has not been reviewed by this publication in a long while, or decades really. Packaged with a retro-looking black label and a bold red font, the Fattoria dei Barbi 2018 Brusco dei Barbi is made with Sangiovese. Actually, the technical sheet reads “mostly” Sangiovese, and I imagine the other blending components to be complementary Tuscan indigenous grapes. The wine is initially shy, but with some effort, you get dark fruit, blackcurrant and wild rose. The 2018 vintage is not big on intensity, and to the palate, this mid-weight red offers good freshness. Interestingly, this wine was created as the result of fermentation experiments by Giovanni Colombini in the 1960s and 1970s. (Monica Larner)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021 Opaque ruby. Smoke-accented aromas of ripe dark berries, pungent flowers and vanilla, along with a hint of white pepper that adds spicy lift. Concentrated, expansive cherry liqueur, blackberry and fruitcake flavors become more energetic as the wine opens up. Round, well-knit tannins frame the appealingly sweet finish, which hangs on with impressive, dark fruit-dominated persistence.

JD93+93–95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/5/2021 Another killer wine, the 2019 Saint-Joseph Vieilles Vignes reveals a dense purple color to go with loads of red and blue fruits, bacon fat, cured meat, and spring flowers. Offering classic Saint-Joseph minerality, medium to full-bodied richness, and plenty of both acidity and tannins, it’s going to shine for 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2021 This lets a silky-textured core of cherry and plum preserve notes unfurl slowly, carried by a bright iron streak and dotted with white pepper and savory accents on the mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2030. 750 cases made, 200 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Dec 2022 The 2021 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard is a perfumed powerhouse! Opaque ruby-purple, it has a concentrated core of cassis with touches of tar, thyme, grilled meats, menthol and bitter chocolate. The full-bodied palate is ripe and concentrated with surprising freshness for its style. It has a pleasantly chalky frame and a very long finish replete with violet perfume. This hedonistic Syrah could use another 5+ years in bottle to unwind and will be long-lived in the cellar. (Erin Brooks)VN94+94–96 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2022 The 2021 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard is one of the highlights among the 2021s I tasted from Joey Tensley. Vibrant and driving in feel, the Colson Syrah is endowed with tremendous character. Blue/purplish fruit, gravel, incense, menthol and lavender all take shape as the 2021 shows off its striking beauty. There is so much to look forward to. (Antonio Galloni)JD93+93–95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/29/2022 From a site located in the hills above Los Olivos, the 2021 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard gives up a dense purple hue as well as notes of jammy blueberries, black cherry liqueur, candied violets, and black pepper. This is a concentrated, medium to full-bodied, powerful Syrah that has terrific tannins as well as good acidity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021 Big florals and raspberries mark the nose of Saint Cosme’s 2019 Cote Rotie. Hints of stems show through, and this wine clearly would benefit from a few years in the cellar, but it is far from being unapproachable. Normally a blend of several lieux-dits, it sees about 30% new oak in its élevage, but the wood is scarcely noticeable. Medium to full-bodied, creamy and supple on the palate, with a long, fruit-infused finish, this should age gracefully for a decade or more.SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2021 A racy, high-pitched, mineral-driven style, with raspberry and damson plum coulis notes pierced with savory and sanguine accents. The long, tight-grained, iron-edged finish resonates. Best from 2022 through 2034. 2,000 cases made, 370 cases imported.
WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2021 This Shiraz, sourced mainly from the Riverland, offers bright berry fruit that mingles with mint, tobacco and iodine notes, along a peppery spine. The palate is a little on the heavy side, but has an appealing fruity tang. It’s a solid weeknight wine. (Christina Pickard)
