E. Guigal Cote Rotie La Turque 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 57187

JD98+98–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2022
The 2018 Côte Rôtie La Turque offers meatier, more savory, mineral-driven aromatics yet has an incredible core of pure cassis and darker fruits. A straight-up massive wine, it has a stacked mid-palate, terrific freshness, and again, a purity of fruit that’s just off the chart. Despite its overall size and richness, it’s weightless and as graceful as a ballerina. It always needs more time to come around compared to the La Mouline and generally starts to drink beautifully a decade after the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 27, 2023
Shows beautiful freshness, despite its age, weight and power, with red currant, mulled blackberry and floral notes floating atop earthy singed tobacco and toasty cedar elements. Just hitting its stride, matching exotic spices with smoke, minerality and a pleasingly dense texture. The lengthy finish reveals baker’s chocolate and toasted herbs. Excellent. Drink now through 2039. (Kristen Bieler)
RP94+94–96+? pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022
Shut down tight on this occasion, the dark, impenetrable 2018 Cote Rotie La Turque is clearly dense and packed with potential. Cedary notes, dark, concentrated fruit, potent tannins and a long, dusty finish suggest plenty of upside for the patient.

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

France's picturesque Rhone Valley produces wines just as beautiful as its landscapes. Located in Southern France, the Rhone is divided into two distinct sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone. In the Northern Rhone, you'll find red wines produced predominantly with the Syrah grape, which oftentimes take a few years to mature before reaching their peak. Meanwhile, there are a wide array of red grapes used to produce wines in the Southern Rhone, including Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre (which together produce a blend known as GSM). The most famous red wine coming out of the Southern Rhone is the red blend, Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Vivid purple. Ripe cherry, black raspberry, exotic spices and violet on the highly perfumed nose. Round and fleshy in the mouth, offering juicy dark fruit, floral pastille and cracked pepper flavors that slowly turn sweeter on the back half. Finishes smooth, spicy and long, showing strong energy, intense spiciness and fine-grained tannins that sneak in late. 100% whole clusters and 40% new oak. (Josh Raynolds)

This is packed with dark fig, blackberry and black cherry compote flavors, all wrapped in apple wood and bacony toast before ending with a swath of warm earth on the finish. Rock-solid, with range and depth for the cellar. Best from 2022 through 2035. 600 cases made, 100 cases imported.
RP94+94–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
Featuring pronounced violet aromas and spice-riddled red berries on the nose, the full-bodied 2018 Saint-Joseph Vignes de l’Hospice is eerily reminiscent of the 2015. It’s full-bodied, plush and velvety, yet it retains great detail and complexity, finishing long and elegant.
JD93+93–95 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/12/2019
Cut from the same cloth yet more rounded, supple, and sexy, the 2018 Saint Joseph Vignes des Hospices is another Hermitage look-alike with its burning embers, graphite, crushed flowers, and meaty dark fruits. I love its texture, it’s full-bodied and concentrated, and it will be drinkable at an earlier age than the 2017. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Not yet bottled, the 2018 Cornas Patou is head-turning stuff, with thrilling amounts of blue and black fruits, ground herbs, pepper, and beef blood aromas and flavors. Rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, it’s a rockingly good wine. This cuvée comes from granite soils and very old vines (average of 80 years in age) and is vinified all in concrete and aged in used oak. It’s straight-up classic juice well worth seeking out and cellaring. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Inky violet color. Smoke- and spice-accented aromas of ripe dark fruits, licorice and leather, with a floral nuance building into the background. Shows a bit of rustic character, but in an endearing way (at least for me), offering sweet cherry-cola, cassis and smoky-bacon flavors and a spicy touch of cracked pepper. Finishes long and smoky, with dusty tannins and the floral note repeating. (Josh Raynolds)

Juicy and forward, with a mouthfilling core of gently steeped plum and blackberry fruit wrapped in a distinctive mix of singed alder, incense, red tea and sanguine threads. The dusty-edged finish has nice persistence. Drink now through 2032. 600 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
JD92+92–94 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/12/2019
I was blown away by the 2018 Saint Joseph, and let’s hope it continues showing this well over the course of its élevage. Rocking levels of crème de cassis, blackberries, crushed violets, and earth all give way to a medium to full-bodied, ripe, sexy effort that ranks with the finest vintages of this release to date. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
Deep magenta. Dark berry preserves, olive, cracked pepper and a hint of licorice on the fragrant nose. Offers supple, appealingly jammy blackberry, cherry preserve and spicecake flavors that become livelier as the wine opens up. Rounded tannins lend shape to a long, smoky finish that leaves candied licorice and dark fruit liqueur notes behind. This is a distinctly ample rendition of this bottling, and it will stand up to the richest red meat preparations. Aged for two years in used oak barrels. (Josh Raynolds)
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, October 11, 2019
An attractively fresh and fragrant nose with acacia-like perfume, chamomile and fresh pear aromas. The palate has a super juicy peach core with such fresh, fleshy appeal and a late, toasty glow. Drink this now.
RP91+91–93 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
Purists may cringe, but Guigal’s 2018 Saint-Joseph is undeniably luscious. Hints of pencil shavings and crushed stone appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is silky-velvety in texture, loaded with ripe raspberries and cream. For value-seeking consumers, this is one release to watch for down the pike.

I’m always amazed at the quality this estate gets in the Côtes du Rhône, especially at the quantities produced. Their 2018 Côtes Du Rhône is well worth seeking out and has a medium-bodied, round, silky style as well as textbook peppery herbs, violets, bouquet garni, and both red and black fruits. It shows the supple, charming, forward style of the vintage and is ideal for drinking over the coming 4–5 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP89+89–91 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
Looking more complex and complete than the 2017 at this point, the 2018 Cotes du Rhone still has a year or so of élevage ahead of it. It has a slightly herbal, briary note, dark berry fruit and hints of mocha on the full-bodied palate. Round and fleshy, it finishes smooth and velvety. (Joe Czerwinski)
RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022
Guigal’s 2018 Cotes du Rhone is a fun, fruit-driven vintage of a wine whose normal style tends more toward “serious.” It’s medium to full-bodied but refreshingly supple, with juicy cherries and blueberries dancing on the palate. (Joe Czerwinski)

The 2018 Côte Rôtie La Landonne is another wine that’s going to be up at the top of the scale, and all three of these 2018s will be candidates for perfection. Always the biggest, richest wine of the three flagships, it’s inky hued and has a primordial nose of blackberries, cassis, and currants fruits as well as huge ground pepper, cured meats, espresso, and underbrush. As Landonne as Landonne gets, it’s full-bodied, has a dense, powerful mid-palate, masses of tannins, and is going to be just about immortal. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP98+98–100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022
Subtle hints of fresh pea shoots accent characteristic dark notes of roasted meat, espresso and black olives in the full-bodied 2018 Cote Rotie La Landonne. Rich, concentrated and velvety-textured, with ample length and plenty of ripe tannins on the finish, it should benefit from a decade or more of bottle age—once it gets there. It’s a brooding beast of a Cote Rotie that serious collectors will want to have in their cellars.

Velvety, seamless and alluringly sweet, offering palate-staining, mineral-laced black/blue fruit preserve, floral pastille, smoky bacon and spicecake flavors that open up steadily on the back half. Moving to the Hermitage releases, the 2018 Hermitage is terrific, and readers will love to have bottles in the cellar. From a great vintage for the Northern Rhône, it has a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, yet wonderfully elegant profile as well as complex notes of darker fruits, pepper, cured meats, and leather. It gets spicier and more nuanced with time in the glass and already offers pleasure, yet it has the structure and balance to benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for 15+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Spicy, cedary and firm, the 2015 Ermitage Ex Voto is built tough, like the granite it comes from. Hints of pencil shavings and crushed stone accent mixed red and black fruit, picking up hints of licorice and pepper on the long, tannic finish. Give this another 5–6 years in the cellar, then drink it over the following decade and a half or so.

The base Côtes Du Rhône from Guigal has to be one of the greatest wines at the price point and volume produced. The 2021 Côtes Du Rhône Blanc offers lots of Viognier character in its apricot, flowers, ripe citrus, and dried herb-like aromatics. Medium-bodied on the palate, it’s fresh, focused, and one heck of a high-quality white to enjoy over the coming year or three. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Picked later than the 2015, the 2016 Cote Rotie La Mouline shows more dark fruit in its profile — think cassis and black olives — plus licorice and peppery spice. It’s full-bodied, rich and supple, with a long finish. It may be nearly as good as the 2015, yet it’ll be drinkable close to release.

The base Condrieu from Guigal always delivers and the 2019 Condrieu is stunning stuff, giving up a beautiful bouquet of ripe nectarines, orange blossom, honeysuckle, and exotic flowers. Just classic Condrieu in every way, it’s medium to full-bodied, with remarkable purity, a fleshy opulence, and a great, clean finish. Readers looking for a textbook Condrieu can’t go wrong with this. It should keep for 7–8 years, although I always prefer these wines in their first 4–5 years of the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2018 Cote Rotie La Mouline is immensely seductive, offering up enticing notes of floral potpourri and red berries on the nose. Those strawberries and raspberries persist onto the full-bodied palate and through the long, lush finish, buoyed by supple, creamy-textured tannins. This is the most complete, compelling vintage of La Mouline I’ve tasted.
JD97+97–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2022
Scheduled to be bottled early in 2022, the 2018 Côte Rôtie La Mouline is a blockbuster of a wine offering full-bodied aromas and flavors of black raspberries, cassis, spring flowers, espresso, and violets. Coming from a steep, terraced, warmer terroir and fermented with 10% Viognier, it’s always the sexiest, more exotic, and seamless, as well as approachable, of the flagship releases. The 2018 will unquestionably pure a smile on your face as soon as it’s released, but it will ideally be given 7–8 years of bottle age and drunk over the following 30+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A beefy red pierced by intriguing spice and dried incense notes, with heavy espresso, charred anise and warm cedar elements draped over flavors of red plum and chocolate ganache. The 2018 Ermitage Ex Voto is stunning, and comes closest in my mind to a mix of the 2015 and 2016. Showing more blue fruits, violets, chocolate, and a liquid rock-like minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, massive amounts of fruit, and building tannins. While the 2017 has more upfront exuberance, I love the purity, depth, and sheer class of the 2018. (Jeb Dunnuck)
