When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/21/2020
The 2017 Syrah Rockpile Vineyard is another huge success in the vintage. From a great site in the Rockpile AVA of Sonoma County, its deep purple color is followed by a great bouquet of blueberries, iron, crushed rocks, ground pepper, and hints of smoked game. Structured and tannic on the palate, it reminds me of a young Cornas and needs 4–5 years of bottle age. It’s seriously impressive, though, and should have 15 years of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Aug 2020
Inky in the glass, the 2017 Syrah Haley Rockpile Vineyard has bold scents of violet, tar, cassis and dried herbs with touches of menthol, milk chocolate and graphite. The full-bodied palate is dense and rich with a grainy frame and just enough freshness, finishing perfumed. Give it more time in bottle. 308 cases produced.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020
Deeply structured and polished, featuring lively blueberry and cherry flavors, laced with smoked pepper and black licorice notes that build tension toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2030. 357 cases made. (Tim Fish)

WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2020
Aged in 100% new French oak, this wine offers substantial layers of leather, black pepper and blackberry jam. Luscious and opulently over-the-top in style, it packs remarkable power and flavor into a satisfyingly cohesive whole.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Aug 2020
Inky purple-black, the 2017 Syrah Buffalo Hill Rockpile Vineyard haas a nose of violets, Luxardo cherries and cassis with nuances of menthol, dried thyme and olive. It’s full-bodied with a chalky texture, spicy, broody fruits and just enough freshness on the finish. Give it more time in bottle. 114 cases produced.
