Sine Qua Non Distenta II Syrah 2020 / 750 ml.

Item#: 59115

RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Mar 2023
The recently bottled 2020 Syrah Distenta II is a blend of 82.9% Syrah, 7.5% Grenache, 3.9% Mourvèdre, 3.4% Petite Sirah and 2.3% white grapes (1.5% Muskat and 0.8% Petit Manseng, to be precise). It comes entirely from estate vineyards: The Third Twin (43%), Eleven Confessions (32%), Cumulus (21%) and Molly Aïda (3%). It was fermented with 16% whole clusters and matured for about 23 months in 66% new French oak. “I like whole cluster less on Syrah,” Manfred Krankl explains. “It can be more herbal. But these 2020s are much more fleshy and unctuous, so it shows better.” Opaque ruby in color, it opens significantly as it spends time in the decanter, unfolding to cassis, crème de violette, coffee and warm chocolate. The palate embodies weightless power, its concentrated, graphite-laced flavors carried by a velvety, seamless frame, while soft bursts of acidity highlight floral perfume on the long finish. Still very tightly coiled, its intense, latent flavors suggest this has much more to give as it unwinds in bottle. 1,999 cases and 600 magnums will be released in the spring of 2023. (Erin Brooks)

JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/30/2023
A wine that just about tops out the scale, the 2020 Syrah Distenta II (83% Syrah, 8% Grenache, 4% Mourvèdre, and the balance Petite Sirah and mixed whites) is a more exuberant, spicy, incredibly complex Syrah offering assorted red and black fruits, ground pepper, flowery incense, tobacco, and cured meat nuances in its full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, layered, elegant style. Coming 43% from the Third Twin, 33% Eleven Confessions, 21% Cumulus, and the rest from the Molly Aida vineyards (all of which are estate), it saw slightly less whole clusters compared to the 2021 and spent 23 months in 66% new French oak. Anyone questioning the genius of Manfred Krankl needs to taste this wine. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2023
The 2020 Syrah Distenta II is outrageously beautiful. Dark and enveloping, the 2020 offers up compelling aromatics, dark, almost somber fruit, and exceptional balance. Broad, chocolatey tannins wrap it all together. Readers will find a super-classic Sine Qua Non Syrah. (Antonio Galloni)
JD97+97–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/29/2022
Tons of red, blue, and black fruits as well as peppery herbs and liquid violet-like nuances emerge from the 2020 Syrah Distenta II, a full-bodied, concentrated, remarkably balanced barrel sample that’s based on 83% Syrah, 7.5% Grenache, and the rest Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah, Muscat, and Petit Manseng. I love its mid-palate, it has ripe, sweet tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It’s unquestionably a brilliant wine in the making. (Jeb Dunnuck)

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 58607

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2022
A blend of 58% Syrah, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Optimus has a deep ruby color and a deep core of red and black cherries, chargrill, thyme, charcuterie and desiccated violet. The full-bodied palate is light on its feet with juicy acidity and approachable grainy tannins, and it has a long, layered finish. (Erin Brooks)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 7, 2022
Grilled meat, bacon fat, tobacco and olives to the nose that follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate with rich, creamy tannins. 58% syrah, 31% cabernet sauvignon, 11% petit verdot. Drink now or hold.
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/26/2022
Starting off with the 2020 Optimus, it’s a blend of 58% Syrah, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Petit Verdot that spent 14 months in 65% new French oak. It displays a solid deeper purple hue to go with a peppery, darker berry, graphite, and smoky earth-driven bouquet. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a round, supple, mouth-filling texture, quality tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. It’s clearly an outstanding wine but a step back from past vintages. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Andremily Eaba 2020 / 750 ml.

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 52635

JD9999 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/30/2023
The EABA is more Syrah-dominated and checks in as 65% Syrah, 22% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache, and the rest Viognier that saw plenty of stems and close to two years in 50% new French oak. Its inky purple hue is followed by a sensational bouquet of bloody blue fruits, black raspberries, iron, ground pepper, baking spices, and who knows what else. Incredibly complex and nuanced (yet intense) aromatically, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, concentrated mouthfeel, and a finish that won’t quit. It’s certainly one of the biggest, richest wines in the lineup, yet like all of Jim’s wines, it remains light on its feet, has brilliant purity of fruit, and is as drinkable as could be. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Nov 2023
Eaba (pronounced “ee-buh”) means “end all be all,” and it is an apt name for this stunning blend of 65% Syrah, 22% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache and 3% Viognier, which represents a selection of the best lots of the vintage. It comes from several vineyards in Santa Barbara County (Bien Nacido, White Hawk, Larner and Alta Mesa), plus Andremily’s new Slide Hill estate vineyard in Edna Valley. It was vinified using 70% whole clusters and matured for around 22 months in 50% new French barriques. Aged an additional year in bottle before release, winemaker Jim Binns says that beginning with the 2021 vintage, Eaba will also be aged longer in barrel. (Erin Brooks)

Tasted out of bottle, the 2020 Grenache Distenta II is total blockbuster stuff that’s darker and richer than the 2021. Red and black fruits, white pepper, classy leather, and spicy baking chocolate-like nuances all define the aromatics, and it’s deep, full-bodied, and beautifully balanced, with gorgeous tannins and a great finish. The blend is 78% Grenache, 9% Mourvèdre, 8% Syrah, and the rest Petite Sirah (with a splash of Viognier), and it’s going to knock your socks off any time over the coming 15+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JD97+97–100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/29/2022
The 2020 Grenache Distenta II is a blend of mostly 78% Grenache and the rest Mourvèdre, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and a tiny splash of Viognier. It’s a ripe, sexy, insanely good barrel sample that has remarkable purity, tons of black raspberry and cassis fruits, perfect balance, full-bodied richness, and an already complex bouquet of violets, spice, and flowers. I continue to be blown away by what this estate seems to achieve with Grenache in just about every vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Mar 2023
The recently bottled 2020 Grenache Distenta II is a blend of 77.9% Grenache, 9.4% Mourvèdre, 7.9% Syrah, 4.3% Petite Sirah and 0.5% Viognier. Fruit comes entirely from the Krankls’ estate vineyards: Eleven Confessions (40%), Cumulus (33%), The Third Twin (21%) and Molly Aïda (6%). It was made with 29% whole clusters, predominantly Grenache. “Ten years ago, I was afraid of whole clusters,” Manfred Krankl recalls. “Now, I quite like it, especially on Grenache, a little less so on Syrah.” Matured about 23 months in 52% new French oak and demi-muids, it has a deep ruby-purple color and blossoms beautifully in a decanter over several hours, particularly notable for its super-fine texture and detailed aromas and flavors. Its youthfully dense wild berry fruit unfolds to nuances of salami, powdered sugar, olive and potpourri as it airs in the glass. Medium-bodied with pixelated tannins, the palate is lighter on its feet than expected, boasting mouthwatering acidity, ethereal, layered flavors and detailed, spicy accents that fan across the finish. Around 1,630 cases and 600 magnums will be made, due to be released in the spring of 2023. (Erin Brooks)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2023
The 2020 Grenache Distenta II is a dense, powerful wine. A blast of dark cherry, plum, espresso, menthol, licorice and cloves hits the palate. This rich, heady Grenache delivers the goods. In a vintage that was so hard for Grenache, Elaine and Manfred Krankl found the way to craft a memorable wine. All this needs is time. (Antonio Galloni)
