Shop for Tempranillo

When it comes to Spanish wines, Tempranillo takes center stage. Tempranillo is to Spain what Cabernet is to California. This black grape wine flourishes in the harsh climate of the Rioja zones, Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, as well as in the acclaimed Ribera del Duero, but is still flexible enough to succeed in some of Spain's southern wine regions, as well.

Just as it succeeds in several climates, The Tempranillo grape also enjoys success in both single varietal and blend wines. In Rioja, it's often blended with Grenache to create some of the region's most sophisticated, complex, and heralded wines. Elsewhere, winemakers have been known to blend Tempranillo with Syrah and even Cabernet.

  6. R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva

    2008 / 750 ml. | Item#50517

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The nose of the 2008 Viña Tondonia Reserva is very elegant, fresh and with an herbal twist, starting to show the complexity of the aged wines that are sometimes still too young when they are released 10+ years from the vintage! The palate is medium-bodied, with lightness and depth, very classical with extra freshness and all that is needed for a long development in bottle. This is the more Tondonia of the two vintages I tasted side by side. There are notes of maple syrup, smoke, licorice and crisp fruit. The palate is more austere, crunchy and reveals the chalkiness of the soils. There’s more definition and precision here.
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 2, 2020
Lots of dried fruit with plum, light raisin, chocolate and toasted oak. Some balsamic undertones. White truffles and dried flowers. Medium body, creamy tannins and savory, balsamic undertones. Extreme and unique, as always. Drink now.

  7. R. López de Heredia Viña Bosconia Reserva

    2008 / 750 ml. | Item#47173

    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 2, 2020
Taking on a balsamic and high-toned wood character to the ripe fruit on the nose. Some dried cheese and ripe fruit, too. Medium-bodied with integrated tannins that are polished and fine. Goes on for minutes. A beautiful, traditional wine, as always. Drink or hold.
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The profile of the 2008 Viña Bosconia Reserva is a lot less ripe than the 2009, and there are some herbal undertones; it’s more reserved and austere, still undeveloped after five years in barrel and at least that much time in bottle. It’s a blend of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacho and the rest Graciano and Mazuelo that matured in used American oak barrels for five years. It reveals a medium body and some dusty tannins. It’s quite the opposite from the 2009, and I think a hypothetical blend of the two would be better than each. It’s a cold and austere vintage of Bosconia. 75,000 bottles produced. It was bottled unfiltered and fined with egg whites in four different lots, depending on logistics. It was bottled in November 2017.

The 2008 Reserva just feels very Rioja, with notes of leather, cedar, cigar box and a core of red and black fruit. The palate is fresh, with very good acidity, clean flavors and good persistence and length. This Reserva delivers very good value. Drink 2014–2018.

  12. Muga Selección Especial

    2014 / 750 ml. | Item#48907

    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, August 2, 2018
Fruit-focused red, with strong aromas of ripe blackberries, red plums and gently complex earthy and spicy notes. There’s energetic, ripe dark and red fruit on the palate. Silky and crisp with fine tannins, giving a velvety and chalky texture. Upbeat and succulent finish. Drink or hold.
    JD93+93+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - March 1, 2018
A wine that won’t be released on the market until next year, the 2014 Muga Reserva Selección Especial checks in as a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, 10% Graciano, 5% Manuelo. With an inky black color and loads of black fruits, charcoal, lead pencil, and espresso aromas and flavors, it’s medium to full-bodied, has slightly more acidity than the 2012, as well as more tannin. It’s a balanced, pure, beautiful expression of Rioja. It’s going to benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for 15–20+ years.
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Feb 2018
The Muga family is a lot happier about 2014 than your average Riojano, and the 2014 Selección Especial shows why. Through a selection of the vineyards and longer aging in barrel, this is a more-polished wine, very good with food (it’s the one winemaker Jorge Muga usually has when he drinks one of his wines with a meal). There is very good acidity here, which is why I think this is so good with food. I really see that vintages produced from the higher-altitude, cooler places in Rioja where the Muga family sources their grapes are different from other parts of Rioja, and this 2014 is one of the finest and most balanced of the recent vintages of Selección Especial. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2017.
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019
Bright violet color. Vibrant, spice- and mineral-tinged scents of fresh dark fruits and spicecake are complemented by a suave floral overtone. Juicy and pliant in the mouth, offering gently sweet black raspberry, cherry-cola, spicecake and rose pastille flavors that deepen steadily on the back half. In an energetic style, showing excellent clarity and silky tannins that frame an impressively long, focused finish.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 15, 2019
A dense texture carries ripe flavors of blackberry, currant, licorice and toast in this modern-style red. Bright acidity and firm, slightly grippy tannins keep this focused. A bit angular now, but should smooth out with time. Best from 2020 through 2030. 14,000 cases made, 2,500 cases imported.

  13. La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza Reserva

    Selección Especial
    2010 / 750 ml. | Item#32150

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
2010 was a great vintage in Rioja in general and seems to be exceptional here, with a 2010 Viña Ardanza Selección Especial (what used to be Reserva Especial) that can challenge any of the recent vintages and hopefully can develop in bottle to reach the heights of years like 1973 or 1964. The wine is expressive, aromatic, very elegant and clean, with classical Rioja aromas of long aging in barrel and slow oxidation through the years in wood. The palate is polished and sleek but shows plenty of energy, with very fine, mostly resolved tannins and very good harmony and persistence. There is great complexity, and you could start smelling spice and smoke to move to earthy tones, hints of beef blood, cherries in liqueur, curry, diesel, old furniture and forest floor. A great Viña Ardanza! They have managed to produce 600,000 bottles of this — and apparently in one single lot. It was bottled in May 2015.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2019
Polished and graceful, balanced and lively, this red offers cherry, dried strawberry, cedar, spice and vanilla flavors that mingle over light, firm tannins and orange peel acidity. The silky texture and juicy flavors find a graceful middle ground between the traditional and modern styles. Tempranillo and Garnacha. Drink now through 2025. 50,000 cases made.

  15. Burgo Viejo Rioja Crianza

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#29651

    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, August 2, 2018
A tight red with a dense palate of dark berries and chocolate. Full and reserved, yet polished and energetic. Give it two years to soften. Drink in 2020.
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019
Deep ruby. Smoky-accented cherry, blackcurrant and coconut aromas are sharpened by a suggestion of cracked pepper that adds spicy lift. Push and broad in the mouth, offering sweet dark fruit liqueur and oak spice flavors that slowly tighten up on the back half. Finishes creamy and appealingly sweet, with rounded tannins coming in late to add framework and gentle grip.
