Shop for Tempranillo

When it comes to Spanish wines, Tempranillo takes center stage. Tempranillo is to Spain what Cabernet is to California. This black grape wine flourishes in the harsh climate of the Rioja zones, Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, as well as in the acclaimed Ribera del Duero, but is still flexible enough to succeed in some of Spain's southern wine regions, as well.

Just as it succeeds in several climates, The Tempranillo grape also enjoys success in both single varietal and blend wines. In Rioja, it's often blended with Grenache to create some of the region's most sophisticated, complex, and heralded wines. Elsewhere, winemakers have been known to blend Tempranillo with Syrah and even Cabernet.

Very ripe and slightly raw oak over black fruit and coconut candy. The palate has dense, chewy fruit and really assertive tannins. Needs a year or two to settle in.

    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 2, 2020
A rich, fruity red with plum, light chocolate and vanilla character. It’s medium-to full-bodied with round, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold.
    WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/20
This wine’s fresh anise scent has the underlying earthiness of tripe, and it would be pretty delicious with a bowl of tripe braised in red wine. It offers the kind of richness without weight that allows the fragrant peppery and cherry-skin flavors to last through the dark, earthy tannins, a little bitter, a little oaky, but cool in the end.

  6. Señorío de P. Peciña Rioja Crianza

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#33934

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
They are convinced at the winery that the 2015 Señorío de P. Peciña Crianza is the best Crianza they have ever produced, which is often the case with the current vintage for sale... But I must admit that the wine was very impressively balanced, nuanced and complex. It has freshness and is approachable enough while showing Rioja character and integrated oak to appeal to a wide audience. It’s ripe without excess, coming through as juicy and tasty. It spent two years in used American oak barrels. 100,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2019.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2021
Bright ruby. Lively, smoke- and spice-accented cherry and black raspberry aromas are complemented by floral, vanilla and pipe tobacco flourishes. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering vibrant red and blue fruit flavors that deepen and turn spicier with air. Shows very good energy and appealing florality on a very long, penetrating finish shaped by well-judged tannins.

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#40795

    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2018
Always a good value in Ribera and cropped from a fresher year, the 2016 Pruno has notes of licorice, dark berries and even some fresher red fruit. It has abundant, fine-grained tannins that require powerful food. 524,330 bottles and 2016 magnums produced. It was bottled in November 2017.
    SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2018
Smoky and loamy earth notes frame a core of black cherry and plum in this firm, dense red. Balsamic acidity balances muscular tannins, which yield to a floral, minerally finish. Drink now through 2028. 40,000 cases made.

  8. R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva

    2008 / 750 ml. | Item#50517

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The nose of the 2008 Viña Tondonia Reserva is very elegant, fresh and with an herbal twist, starting to show the complexity of the aged wines that are sometimes still too young when they are released 10+ years from the vintage! The palate is medium-bodied, with lightness and depth, very classical with extra freshness and all that is needed for a long development in bottle. This is the more Tondonia of the two vintages I tasted side by side. There are notes of maple syrup, smoke, licorice and crisp fruit. The palate is more austere, crunchy and reveals the chalkiness of the soils. There’s more definition and precision here.
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 2, 2020
Lots of dried fruit with plum, light raisin, chocolate and toasted oak. Some balsamic undertones. White truffles and dried flowers. Medium body, creamy tannins and savory, balsamic undertones. Extreme and unique, as always. Drink now.
    WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2020
This is a lean and fragrant vintage of Viña Tondonia, the López de Heredia family’s prime Rioja Alta vineyard above a meander along the Ebro River. In 2008, the wine is gamey up front, with sour cherry flavors and a delicate, lasting richness. The wine defines Rioja’s traditional elegance.

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#12077

    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
Dark violet. Sharply focused scents of fresh dark berries, candied flowers, licorice and baking spices. Silky and appealingly sweet, offering juicy, spice-laced blueberry and cherry cola flavors that tighten up slowly on the back half. Shows very good depth as well as vivacity and finishes with strong floral persistence and harmonious tannins that fold smoothly into the wine's clinging dark fruit.

  11. Finca Villacreces Ribera del Duero

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#22402

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2019
The 2016 Finca Villacreces was produced to showcase the essence of the estate, mixing grapes from different soils fermented and aged separately and then blended into a combination of 88% Tempranillo, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot that fermented in concrete and oak vats and matured in 225- and 500-liter French oak barrels for 15 months. I was expecting more freshness here, but I found ripe black fruit and something earthy/organic reminiscent of peat and coal, plenty of fine-grained tannins and ripe and earthy flavors. It’s still quite oaky. Surprisingly enough, the 2017 showed better… 71,242 bottles and 535 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2018.

  13. Torre Muga Rioja

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#38755

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Feb 2018
In the end, they also showed me the 2015 Torre Muga, even though the wine had only been in bottle for three months. There were no substantial changes in the way this was made — in provenance of the grape, the fermentation or élevage — even though they fine-tune the use of the oak in every vintage. I don’t think I’ve ever tasted such a young and fruit-driven Torre Muga, and even though it felt a little dizzy from the recent bottling, it had great purity and such a structure and build that it is going to need some time in bottle. But this looks like a better vintage than the 2014. 35,000 bottles produced.

  14. R. López de Heredia Viña Cubillo

    2011 / 750 ml. | Item#25940

    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, July 26, 2019
Cubillo spends three years in barrique and then in larger cask to await bottling, which happens two years before the expected release. This is very fresh on the nose with quite fresh, ripe blackberries and dark cherries, mahogany and dry, woody spices. The palate is very powerful, juicy and fresh with clear black cherries and plums in abundance. So fresh, fleshy and deep. The freshness is impressive. Long, shell-like tannins. Drink or hold.
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
It’s not easy to follow a 2010, but the 2011 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza improves with time in the glass, showing much better than expected. 2011 was a warmer year than the 2010, and the wine is a little riper but has great balance and very good harmony. It’s a noteworthy red for the price asked. 90,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2017.

  15. Contino Reserva

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#54323

    RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The renewed classical red 2016 Reserva was produced as a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo. It fermented in small stainless steel and concrete vats and matured in 225-liter French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels for 18 months. It has a very expressive nose, open, aromatic and showy, a little Rhône-ish. 2016 was a cooler year and they had a long harvest, and it seems like the fruit ripened thoroughly without excess. It’s a natural continuation of the 2015, when the wine already had more freshness and better integrated oak. It has a full body and some dusty tannins, finishing dry and tasty. It’s ready to drink. There were 281,389 bottles and 3,000 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2019.
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2021
Brilliant violet. Highly perfumed aromas of ripe cherry, blueberry, candied rose and incense are complemented by vanilla and woodsmoke nuances that build in the glass. Sweet and pliant on the palate, offering sappy black and blue fruit liqueur and spicecake flavors and a hint of smokiness. Lingers with strong tenacity on the finish, which features a repeating blue fruit note and steadily building tannins.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
This broad red shows inviting freshness, with black cherry and red plum notes that are pure and engaging. Accents of herb, graphite and black tea weave along through the smooth, toasty finish. Drink now through 2030. 2,800 cases made, 800 cases imported.
