A summery sparkler, fragrant, floral and as fruity and refreshing as chilled grapes, this makes a terrific pour with light suppers of poached chicken or a nicoise salad.

The 2015 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza reflects the warmer conditions of the year, and with the riper fruit they picked to produce this wine, they still managed to keep around 13.5% alcohol. The Cubillo vineyard has more clay, and sometimes clay soils take heat better and make the wines fresher than those from poorer soils. 140,000 bottles produced. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Brilliant bright ruby. Ripe cherry, raspberry preserves and candied flowers on the highly perfumed nose and palate. Boasts excellent depth and energy, with a spine of juicy acidity adding focus and lift. This powerful yet lithe wine finishes with strong punch; supple tannins sneak in late to contribute shape and grip.

Like the 2016, the 2015 Romanico doesn’t skimp on fruit and boast a big, sexy nose of blackberry and cassis-like fruit to go with more graphite, scorched earth, and licorice aromas and flavors. Ripe, full-bodied, and concentrated, this 100% Tinta de Toro cuvee offers terrific depth and purity, and punches well above its humble price point. Drink it over the coming 3–4 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Gorgeous floral character to the crushed stone and purple fruit. Lavender and sage, too. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and a savory yet crunchy finish. Dark mushroom and fresh earth. Super length and brightness for this wine. Spring release in 2023. (James Suckling)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2024
Ripe and fruit-forward on the nose, though more restrained on the palate, this red offers flavors of blackberry paste, dried blueberry and cranberry fruit woven through dried sage, marjoram, warmed spices and cocoa powder, backed by rich notes of fresh earth and iron. There’s a creamy nappe to the texture, while fine tannins firm up the supple finish. Drink now through 2030. 10,000 cases made, 8,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

A solid nose common to Rioja smells like earthy berry fruits, dried leaves and olives. A punchy palate with screechy acidity offers flavors of plum and currant touched up by oaky vanilla. More of the same along with a touch of prune carries the finish. Drink through 2022.

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The 2011 Viña Tondonia Reserva is darker and shows riper fruit, a rounder palate and some dusty tannins. A year of ripeness, concentration and tannin, the wine is powerful with the finesse of Tondonia. Tasting this next to the textbook 2010 Tondonia revealed how this has more muscle and a wider back and the 2010 epitomizes the finesse and elegance. 270,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2019. (Luis Gutiérrez)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2024
Richly savory on the nose, this fresh, sinewy red features a minerally underpinning of petrol, earth, iron and salt to the flavors of juicy dried cherry and cranberry, red licorice and mandarin orange peel. Opens nicely in the glass and on the palate, with the persistent finish showing aromatic herbs and spices, plus more mineral notes. Tempranillo, Garnacho, Graciano and Mazuelo. Drink now through 2031. 19,166 cases made, 4,500 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The bottle I tasted of the 2016 Viña Real Crianza is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alavesa that fermented destemmed in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and matured in French and American oak barrels for 13 to 14 months, during which time it was racked every five or six months. It’s expressive, deliciously aromatic, floral and elegant, reflecting a cool year that delivered fresh wines that seem to be very approachable early on. 2016 is a pretty vintage, but this wine is not banal; it has depth and complexity that’s remarkable for the price point. The palate is fresh and balanced, with fine tannins. 900,000 bottles produced. It’s bottled in five lots. I tasted from the bottles filled in April 2019.

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The most classical of their wines, the 2015 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, mostly from Rioja Alta (Sajazarra, Cellorigo and Fonzaleche), but the Garnacha is from different plots in the zone of Tudelilla at high altitude. These grapes are always picked last, but the wine has a similar alcohol level as the rest, around 14.5% in a warm year like 2019. The modus operandi is similar to other of the top cuvées—harvested into 200-kilogram boxes, destemming, optical sorting and fermentation in small oak casks with indigenous yeasts. The élevage in this case is extended to 36 months, and the barrels are only 10% new. This is, year in, year out, my favorite wine from Muga, and in this powerful and ripe year, these late-harvesting vines ripened thoroughly and delivered a full array of aromas and flavors so that the wine has plenty of depth and complexity. It has a very classical profile, with incipient tertiary notes, perfumed, floral and rich, textured and beautifully balanced. They compare this 2015 with 2009 and 2005 in terms of style but with freshness in the style of 2001 and 2010. It’s enjoyable but should also develop for a long time in bottle. One of the finest Prado Enea vintages. 108,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018. There’s no 2012 or 2013 of this. There will be a 2016 and 2019, but no 2017 or 2018. 2020 is still a question mark, they have not yet decided it. (Luis Gutiérrez)
JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, November 20, 2022
Reserved and polished, this is a Prado Enea with great class and focus. It’s so aromatic, with plum, peach, cherry and cedar character. Salted olives, too. Medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins and a long, fresh finish. Elegance with power here. Give it three or four years to open, but already impressive. (James Suckling)

When it comes to Spanish wines, Tempranillo takes center stage. Tempranillo is to Spain what Cabernet is to California. This black grape wine flourishes in the harsh climate of the Rioja zones, Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, as well as in the acclaimed Ribera del Duero, but is still flexible enough to succeed in some of Spain's southern wine regions, as well.

Just as it succeeds in several climates, The Tempranillo grape also enjoys success in both single varietal and blend wines. In Rioja, it's often blended with Grenache to create some of the region's most sophisticated, complex, and heralded wines. Elsewhere, winemakers have been known to blend Tempranillo with Syrah and even Cabernet.
