Shop for Tempranillo

When it comes to Spanish wines, Tempranillo takes center stage. Tempranillo is to Spain what Cabernet is to California. This black grape wine flourishes in the harsh climate of the Rioja zones, Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, as well as in the acclaimed Ribera del Duero, but is still flexible enough to succeed in some of Spain's southern wine regions, as well.

Just as it succeeds in several climates, The Tempranillo grape also enjoys success in both single varietal and blend wines. In Rioja, it's often blended with Grenache to create some of the region's most sophisticated, complex, and heralded wines. Elsewhere, winemakers have been known to blend Tempranillo with Syrah and even Cabernet.

Very ripe and slightly raw oak over black fruit and coconut candy. The palate has dense, chewy fruit and really assertive tannins. Needs a year or two to settle in.

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#48907

    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, December 15, 2020
A very pretty, manicured young red with plum, berry and dark-chocolate character. Medium body and round tannins that are focused and firm. Delicious, succulent finish. Plenty of subtle fruit and supple tannins take you to where you want to go in fine Rioja red. Drinkable now but linear and tight. Give it some time. Better after 2021.
    RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The current vintage of the red that is their first option to have with food is the 2016 Selección Especial, whose grapes are selected from terraced vineyards in the Montes Obarenes and the Sierra Cantabria, from vines averaging 35 years of age. It fermented in oak vats and matured in French oak barrels for 26 months, and it’s kept in bottle for at least 18 months before it’s sold. This is serious and has freshness and some restraint in the palate; it’s much more expressive, floral and aromatic and with more-integrated oak than the wines from five+ years ago. It’s a more elegant vintage than the 2015 and every bit as good, or a tad better. Winemaker Isaac Muga considers 2016 a very good harvest. It was bottled in April 2019. This is among the best vintages of Selección Especial. 288,000 bottles produced.

Dark ruby. Vibrant, smoke- and spice-accented cherry and cassis aromas show very good clarity and a hint of candied rose. Sappy, penetrating and focused on the palate, offering finely etched and appealingly sweet dark berry, cherry cola and spicecake flavors along with a subtle chewing tobacco nuance. Closes impressively long and lively, with resonating florality and chewy, youthfully gripping tannins adding final grip. Raised in new and used French oak barrels.

Always a terrific wine, the 2016 Selección Especial is based on 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, and the rest Graciano and Mazuelo. Almost Rhône-like with its spicy, meaty, gamey style, this beauty offers lots of red and black currants, cedary spice, incense, and tobacco aromas and flavors. It’s medium to full-bodied, has terrific balance, silky tannins, and is just a class act. The 2015 is a richer, more opulent wine, while the 2016 shows a touch more freshness and elegance. Both are beautiful vintages worth buying, cellaring, and drinking.

A tight red with a dense palate of dark berries and chocolate. Full and reserved, yet polished and energetic. Give it two years to soften. Drink in 2020.

Deep ruby. Smoky-accented cherry, blackcurrant and coconut aromas are sharpened by a suggestion of cracked pepper that adds spicy lift. Push and broad in the mouth, offering sweet dark fruit liqueur and oak spice flavors that slowly tighten up on the back half. Finishes creamy and appealingly sweet, with rounded tannins coming in late to add framework and gentle grip.

Glistening ruby-red. Spice-tinged red fruit and floral aromas pick up hints of coconut and succulent herbs with air. Silky and expressive on the palate, offering appealingly sweet cherry and raspberry flavors and a spicecake nuance that builds steadily in the glass. Closes long and smooth, with repeating florality and subtle tannins that come in late.

  8. La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza Reserva

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#32150

    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, October 13, 2020
Traditional and beautiful in character with plum, balsamic, orange-peel and leather aromas and flavors. It’s medium-to full-bodied with creamy texture and a long, intense aftertaste. Drink or hold.
    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
Garnacha is an important component in the 2012 Viña Ardanza Reserva, where it represents 20% of the blend (the rest is, of course, Tempranillo). 2011 was a difficult vintage for Garnacha, so Viña Ardanza was not produced that year and they jumped from 2010, which had the mention “Selección Especial,” to 2012, where it returns to the regular Reserva. The wine is a prototype of polished and aged Rioja with a ruby color with some orange and a developed nose with subtle aromas of decayed leaves, sweet spices and some cherries in liqueur even, quite complex and harmonious. The palate is velvety but rich, with resolved tannins and a fine chalky mouthfeel, sleek and elegant, terribly balanced. The flavors are pure and defined, and there is an overall sense of harmony that I like very much. Brilliant Ardanza! They produced no less than 600,000 bottles of this wine, which is remarkable. It has been in bottle since March 2016, so it’s very approachable but should also age nicely in bottle. Drink or keep.

  9. Flor de Pingus

    2019 / 750 ml. | Item#55841

    JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, October 14, 2021
Blackberries, black cherries and hot crushed stones with cement and black licorice. Subtle yet complex aromas. Medium to full body and an exquisite texture, with intense tannins and a long, flavorful finish. The verve and mouth-feel is luxurious and captivating. This is very structured. Try after 2024.
    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2021
The 2019 Flor de Pingus is marginally riper than the PSI and Pingus from the same vintage but still shows the freshness and finesse the cask sample showed a little over one year ago. The wine has more concentration than the 2018, and it has absorbed the oak quite well. They use maybe 20% new barrels for the élevage here. It has abundant, fine-grained tannins. It’s a powerful vintage of flor, reflecting the solar vintage, but still keeping the poise, harvesting early and fermenting at low temperature. 108,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2021.

  12. R. López de Heredia Viña Bosconia Reserva

    2008 / 750 ml. | Item#47173

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2021
Deep garnet. Intense, mineral-tinged red and blue fruit and floral scents are complemented by suggestions of baking spices, vanilla and woodsmoke. Supple, seamless and concentrated, yet lithe as well, offering intense raspberry, cherry-vanilla and rose pastille flavors underscored by vibrant mineral and blood orange nuances. Shows fine definition and sappiness and finishes sweet, focused and extremely long, with finely etched tannins adding framework and final grip.
    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 2, 2020
Taking on a balsamic and high-toned wood character to the ripe fruit on the nose. Some dried cheese and ripe fruit, too. Medium-bodied with integrated tannins that are polished and fine. Goes on for minutes. A beautiful, traditional wine, as always. Drink or hold.
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The profile of the 2008 Viña Bosconia Reserva is a lot less ripe than the 2009, and there are some herbal undertones; it’s more reserved and austere, still undeveloped after five years in barrel and at least that much time in bottle. It’s a blend of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacho and the rest Graciano and Mazuelo that matured in used American oak barrels for five years. It reveals a medium body and some dusty tannins. It’s quite the opposite from the 2009, and I think a hypothetical blend of the two would be better than each. It’s a cold and austere vintage of Bosconia. 75,000 bottles produced. It was bottled unfiltered and fined with egg whites in four different lots, depending on logistics. It was bottled in November 2017.

    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 2, 2020
A rich, fruity red with plum, light chocolate and vanilla character. It’s medium-to full-bodied with round, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold.
    WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/20
This wine’s fresh anise scent has the underlying earthiness of tripe, and it would be pretty delicious with a bowl of tripe braised in red wine. It offers the kind of richness without weight that allows the fragrant peppery and cherry-skin flavors to last through the dark, earthy tannins, a little bitter, a little oaky, but cool in the end.
