Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva 2016 / 750 ml.

Item#: 50396

SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2023
Well-balanced and fresh, this medium-bodied version is tightly meshed at first, though opening nicely in the glass to display flavors of ripe cherry and red currant, mocha, iron and spiced orange peel. The lively finish is firmed by fine, taut tannins. Tempranillo and Graciano. Drink now through 2030. 20,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

Aromas of spiced cherries, blueberries, orange peel, savory plums and some chocolate and vanilla. It’s medium-to full-bodied with creamy tannins. Caressing texture with a fresh core of dark fruit on the center-palate, before a long, juicy finish. Drink or hold.

Where It's From

Region / Rioja

View more wines from Rioja

The dry mountainous climate of Rioja in north-central Spain produces some tantalizing wines. Tempranillo and Garnacha are the dominant red wine grapes in the region, and a majority of wines sped some time in oak casks. The wines here are known not only for their tremendous quality, but also their incredible value compared with similar quality wines from other parts of the world.

Country / Spain

View more wines from Spain

The picturesque countryside of Spain is littered with vineyards large and small, and offers up some of the best value available on the wine market today. You can consistently fine critically-acclaimed Spanish wines selling for less than their counterparts from other wine-producing countries. The Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions are most famous, and there's nowhere else in the world where you'll find as many world-class Tempranillos.

I like the medium-velvety tannins with firmness, brightness and freshness. Full-bodied, racy and energetic. Elegance with structure. 85% tempranillo, 10% graciano and 5% mazuelo. Needs four to five years in the bottle, but already impressive to taste.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022
A fresh red, with tobacco and smoke notes that are fragrant and savory as they waft through plumped cherry and milled pepper. Chalky tannins are a firm structural core, but this is well-integrated throughout. Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo. Drink now through 2029. 4,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

The extremely affordable 2016 Viña Real Gran Reserva Especial recovers the “Especial” mention from the old Reserva Especial vintages from a very good year. It’s a classical Rioja Alavesa blend of 95% Tempranillo with 5% Graciano from their own vineyards. It’s open and expressive, with notes of berries, fresh blood and iron, orange peel and sweet spices with the oak still present and in need of some more time in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied and feels lean and serious, with abundant chalky tannins. This should be a classical vintage of this wine in the making. It matured in barrel for two years and no less than three in bottle. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2019. (Luis Gutiérrez)

An enticing red, with a pure note of ripe wild cherry fruit that’s bright and lively, layered with supple tannins and a fragrant range of anise, loamy earth and stemmy herbs. Lightly chalky on the finish. Tempranillo and Graciano. Drink now through 2029. 2,500 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

Lots of ripeness with blackberry, fresh-mushroom, bark and moss undertones. Full-bodied with powerful tannins, yet they have a pretty fruit coating and end with complexity and candidness. Old-vine character. Drink after 2023.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
It’s interesting to compare the 2016 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de San Vicente de la Sonsierra with the wine from the same year but from the external suppliers from Labastida, as the two wines are produced in the same way after a natural fermentation in small vats and oak casks and matured in a combination of barriques of different origins and aged for 13 months. The grapes from San Vicente usually achieve more ripeness, which is the case in this 2016. It’s a little less precise and focused than the Labastida, especially on the nose. There is a little more rusticity on the palate, with some dusty tannins. Again, I think it represents the character of the village. 43,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in April and May 2018.

RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The bottle I tasted of the 2016 Viña Real Crianza is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alavesa that fermented destemmed in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and matured in French and American oak barrels for 13 to 14 months, during which time it was racked every five or six months. It’s expressive, deliciously aromatic, floral and elegant, reflecting a cool year that delivered fresh wines that seem to be very approachable early on. 2016 is a pretty vintage, but this wine is not banal; it has depth and complexity that’s remarkable for the price point. The palate is fresh and balanced, with fine tannins. 900,000 bottles produced. It’s bottled in five lots. I tasted from the bottles filled in April 2019.

Red fruit, toasted oak and some coffee and chocolate. Medium body with firm tannins and attractive ripeness. Drink or hold.

Supple and graceful tannins encase the cherry tart, violet and cola notes of this mocha-tinged red. Accents of loamy earth, anise and herb sail on through the finish. Drink now through 2026. 100,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.
