Yalumba Museum Reserve Muscat NV / 375 ml.

Item#: 12559

WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 2/1/2011
Yalumba’s Muscat includes some lots from outside Rutherglen, but it’s still an excellent example of fortified Muscat, featuring hints of caramelized cherries and a sweet, complex mélange of caramel, toffee and chocolate balanced by citrusy freshness.

If you like old tawnies from the Douro, here’s an impressive alternative at a remarkable price. The flavors don’t stop, from apricot to lemon, roasted hazelnut, caramel, orange marmalade, honey and honeydew rind — something tangy and slightly rancio, along with something refreshing to hold the wine’s sweetness in check. It’s delicate, in fact, harmonious, with a slow fade that encourages another sip.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2012
Sweet, bordering on syrupy, but nicely held in check by sufficient acidity, allowing the coffee, sassafras, vanilla and clotted cream flavors to glide effortlessly through the expressive finish. Drink now. 2,000 cases imported.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2016
Pale tawny-brown with a green rim, the NV Museum Release Muscat is full of raisins and dates on the nose; the aromatics are very perfumed, spicy and lifted, with some praline notes in the background. This Muscat is so sweet and rich, with notes of liquid sultanas, as well as concentration, length and spice on the palate.

When casual wine drinkers think of Australian wine, they probably think of the critter-laden labels of Yellow Tail and The Little Penguin, among others. And while large wine companies dominate the Australian list, there are also a great number of smaller producers creating highly-rated, award-winning wines.

The majority of Australian wine is produced in South Australia, with most of that (those “critter wines”) carrying a South Eastern Australia appellation. Subregions such as Barossa Valley, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale are home to smaller producers and higher quality wines. Victoria and New South Wales are also significant regions, and wines from Western Australia are reaching America in increasing numbers.

Though Shiraz is the grape most associated with Australia, they’ve also had great success with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and Grenache.

A spicy and peppery shiraz with blackberries, stems and hints of herbs and green tobacco. Very varietal. Medium body. Medium, round tannins with tension and focus. I like the almond-flavored underlay. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

This highly herbal Cab leads with notes of bay and tobacco leaf, mint, cracked black pepper and graphite, which are all as prominent as the red currant and cherry aromas. The palate comes with chunky, drying tannins and lifted acidity. This lacks the power-elegance balance Cabernet craves, but nevertheless, the supple fruit provides drinkability, if sipped beside a slab of rare red meat. (Christina Pickard)

Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache 2020 / 750 ml.

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 66209

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 4, 2021
This has plenty of attractive raspberry fruit and a gently sappy edge. The palate is fresh and sweetly red-fruited, with such easygoing and effortlessly fresh raspberry and red cherry. So, so fresh. Value red that really strokes at the heart of Barossa grenache. Drink now. Screw cap.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2023
Dried herbs, white pepper, crushed flowers and freshly poured tarmac mingle with fresh plum and red-berry fruit on this aromatic, affordable Grenache. The grip of chewy tannins in the mouth is almost surprising. Crisp acidity lifts the primary fruit and spice flavors. Structured enough to pair with a pork roast, but light and approachable enough to drink on its own. A top example of how far this variety has come Down Under. (Christina Pickard)

Peach and apricot notes are fragrant and juicy, with orange sherbet, lemon blossom and a fresh, mouthwatering finish. Drink now. 80,000 cases made, 19,400 cases imported.

Scents of white pepper, flower blossoms and lychee mark the 2020 Y Series Viognier as being varietally correct, even if it’s not a rich, concentrated example. It’s medium-bodied, silky-textured and spicy, with a splash of rosewater on the finish. Drink it over the next year.
