Ridge Paso Robles Zinfandel | Benito Dusi Ranch 2020 / 750 ml.

Item#: 28414
Loads of earth and smoked meat aromas kick off the nose of this bottling from a historic property, with smashed berry, plum and anise notes also arising. There’s solid tension to the palate, where strawberry compote, peppercorn and dried pork flavors align. (Matt Kettmann)
Appealingly old-school, with sturdy blackberry, licorice and briar patch accents that race toward zesty tannins. Drink now through 2030. 3,600 cases made. (Tim Fish)
The 2020 Zinfandel Paso Robles, the second selection from Benito Dusi, is nicely done. It offers up an array of dark fruit, orange peel, coffee and exotic spice, all in a nervy, mid-weight style that is quite attractive. The Paso Zinfandel is not as plush as it can be, but that’s the vintage. Picked early? (Antonio Galloni)

This focused, firm and tannic wine exudes black pepper and wood-smoke aromas followed by rather tight espresso, blueberry and cacao flavors. Made from 74% Zinfandel and other California heritage-grape varieties, it has the bones of a cool-climate wine and should improve through at least 2028. (Jim Gordon)
Opens with a juicy burst of cherry fruit, then turns brooding midway, with dark berry flavors accented by savory white pepper and bay leaf. Ends with broad-shouldered tannins. Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignan and Alicante Bouschet. Drink now through 2031. 21,000 cases made. (Tim Fish)

Rombauer’s 2020 Zinfandel is 87% Sierra Foothills, with the remainder of the fruit coming from Napa and Lake Counties; approximately half the fruit is from the family’s own vineyards. Aged primarily in older wood (less than 10% new oak), it’s a full-bodied, fruit-forward effort, marked by blackberries and mulberries. Gentle earth and briar notions bring just a bit of complexity to the table, while the texture is plush and ripe, the finish softly dusty and long. (Joe Czerwinski)

Monte Bello Vineyard
2019 / 750 ml.
Item #: 54053
Distinctive, with a burst of singed vanilla and savory leading off, followed by dark plum and blackberry puree notes that stream through. Shows singed mesquite and a sanguine note as this unfolds. Sleek, tight-grained finish. Best from 2023 through 2033. 6,800 cases made. (James Molesworth)
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate offers a hugely appealing mix of fruit richness married to the savory, structured style that is the Ridge signature. The 2019 is beautifully exotic, but natural without the volume of the Monte Bello. I imagine it will drink splendidly with minimal cellaring. Succulent red cherry, blood orange, mint, cinnamon and pomegranate. (Antonio Galloni)

A beautiful red with lots of blackberries, cloves, stone, spice and purple fruit. It’s full and balanced with a creamy texture and a flavorful finish. Some graphite to the black fruit. More zin this year in the blend. 71% zinfandel, 19% carignan, 7% petite sirah and 3% alicante bouschet. Drink now.
Deeply structured, yet nimble on its feet. Blackberry, fresh fennel and brown baking spices build richness and layers toward medium-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Carignane, Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. Drink now through 2030. 11,000 cases made.
The 2019 Zinfandel Geyserville is 71% Zinfandel, 19% Carignan, and the rest Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. This was a cooler vintage yet this wine reveals plenty of ripeness in its black and blue fruits as well as violets, cigar, and toasted spice-like aromas and flavors. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and expansive on the palate, it has some obvious minerality, building tannins, and a great finish. It’s not going to match the 2018, but it’s still a complete, nuanced, complex Zinfandel that will keep for 10–15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

This is a very powerful Monte Bello with currants and blackberry, black licorice and smoked meat. Mint. Some sesame seed, too. It’s full-bodied with incredible darkness and saltiness like volcanic salt. Umami. Grilled seaweed. Flavorful and captivating. It goes on for minutes. Try after 2025, but this may age forever.
The 2019 Monte Bello is a wild, exotic wine. Huge, soaring aromatics meld into a core of heady, exotically ripe fruit. Not a shy wine by any means, the 2019 is atypically opulent, and yet all of the classic Monte Bello structure is there, underneath all of that fruit. The 2019 needs time in bottle to shed its baby fat, but there is a lot to look forward to. I imagine it will always be a pretty exuberant wine. Inky red fruit, blood orange, espresso, sweet American oak, cedar and pipe tobacco leave a lasting impression. In a word: magnificent! (Antonio Galloni)
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello is a more Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, all hitting 13.7% alcohol. As usual, it was aged in new American oak. It shows the higher Cabernet component and is deep purple-hued and tight and closed, with a primordial vibe to its dark blue and black fruit, smoked tobacco, vanilla bean, graphite, and cedarwood aromatics. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has terrific overall balance, building, ripe tannins, a good sense of freshness, and outstanding length. It reminds me slightly of the 2018 with its more elegant, streamlined profile, but I expect this to build with bottle age, and it should have 2–3 decades of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
This has a densely packed core of vivid red and black currant and mulberry fruit, which is encased for now in a mix of charcoal, cast iron, singed mesquite and apple wood. Shows terrific drive, though, and everything is in proportion, with an echo of violet hinting at some inner purity. This will just need time to unwind. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2040. 5,700 cases made. (James Molesworth)

The deep purple/ruby-hued 2019 Zinfandel Pagani Ranch comes from a site in the Sonoma Valley and is 90% Zinfandel, 6% Petit Sirah, and the rest Alicante Bouschet. Red plums, blueberries, blood orange, and candied violet notes all emerge from this beauty, which is medium to full-bodied and offers an ultra-fine texture, silky tannins, and a great finish. This is one impressive, satisfying Zinfandel to enjoy over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Deeply structured but not weighty, showing black raspberry and blueberry flavors laced with bittersweet chocolate, green peppercorns and fruitcake spices that build tension toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2030. 3,990 cases made. (Tim Fish)

A wine of weight and substance, the 2019 Petite Syrah Lytton Estate is fabulous. Best of all, readers won’t have to contend with huge Petite tannins, as those have been handled admirably. Black cherry, plum, exotic spice, leather, tobacco and incense infuse the 2019 with tons of complexity. There’s plenty of supporting structure, but the tannins are pretty much buried. What a wine. (Antonio Galloni)
Looking at the 2019s, the 2019 Petite Sirah Lytton Estate is a beauty, offering a plump, fruit-forward, yet concentrated style carrying ample darker black fruits, chocolate, chalky minerality, and roasted herb-like aromas and flavors. It’s a big mouthful of a Petite Sirah that stays balanced and has good freshness and notable structure. It will have 15+ years of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)
