From the Producer

Uber high toned, as if Good Humor Popsicle Co. made a deal with the devil to make their strawberry shortcake fresh with a citrus zing. Floral breezy, and delicious. Upfront quenching acidity, showing traces of rhubarb, straight into a super savory, dry finish. A nice hit of minerality underneath a light citrus spray floating on top. In the glass, the wine appears a perfect pale pink but more sassy and tart than Barbie pink.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Watermelon, light cherry and earthy aromas of struck stone show on the nose of this bottling. The texture is chalky on the palate, where orange rind, strawberry and crushed-rock flavors align. (Matt Kettmann)

The 2018 Syrah Estate is a fabulous example of both the estate and everything Ballard Canyon is about. Fabulously deep and expansive, the Estate captures tremendous character. The flavors are dark, brooding and so rich. Black cherry, plum, leather, spice and dried herbs abound. The 50% whole clusters are nicely integrated, but the tannins are equally imposing, so a measure of patience is critical. All of the other Syrahs in this range are compelling, but to me the Estate is the most complete. It’s a reference-point wine for the appellation.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2020
Clean aromas of boysenberry, wet stone and sifted ash show on the lively nose of this bottling. The palate is intensely grippy with earthy tension, combining freshly smashed berry flavors with aromatic rosewater flavors and just a hint of game.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
Medium ruby purple, the 2018 Syrah Estate opens with bright, fresh blackcurrants, aniseed, tar and laurel on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with lifted, juicy, floral-laced fruits and finishes long and uplifted. 3,900 cases produced.
JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 4, 2020
Blended with 2% Viognier, the 2018 Syrah Estate Grown reveals a saturated purple color as well as a lively bouquet of spiced red and blue fruits, ground pepper, violets, and a touch of cedary herbs. Medium-bodied, fresh, and focused, it’s a classy Syrah to drink over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
