Very ripe and slightly raw oak over black fruit and coconut candy. The palate has dense, chewy fruit and really assertive tannins. Needs a year or two to settle in.

  8. Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut

    NV / 187 ml. | Item#37564

    SP8787 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2011
This shows more finesse than many of its peers, displaying a subtle juiciness, joined by aromatic apricot, quince, mandarin orange and almond notes. Finely meshed with a lightly spiced finish. Drink now.
    RP8686 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st May 2011
The lineup begins with the Non-Vintage Cordon Negro made from the three traditional grape varieties of the Cava DO (Xarel-lo, Macabeu, and Parellada) with the emphasis on the latter for this bottling. It is made in a tasty, friendly style with a dosage of 9 grams making it just off-dry on the palate. It is a cleanly made sparkling wine that can be found in discount stores at well under the suggested retail price.
    WS8686 pts. - Wine & Spirits - August 1, 2014
Bold and juicy passion fruit scents combine with the flinty, rubber-meets-the-road reduction character typical of Cava. This is rich and round, finishing clean. Chill it for grilled calamares and other tapas.
    WE8585 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/15/2011
Cidery on the nose, with a standard palate and mildly briney flavors of apple and other basic white fruits. Highly regular, with a decent finish. A quaffer or the type of Cava to mix with orange juice.

  11. La Rioja Alta Viña Arana Gran Reserva

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#53202

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2021
Brilliant ruby. Energetic, spice- and smoke-accented black raspberry and candied cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of rose oil, coconut and cured tobacco. Youthfully chewy and focused on entry, offering concentrated red and dark berry, cherry cola and candied licorice flavors that deepen steadily with air. Floral pastille and oak spice notes linger on the impressively long, smoke-tinged finish, which shows excellent clarity and polished tannins. (Josh Raynolds)
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The 2015 Viña Arana Gran Reserva, which was a Reserva until 2011, wants to showcase a new Gran Reserva style that combines freshness and joy with intensity, sophistication and aging potential through a blend of Tempranillo from Rodezno with 5% Graciano from Fuenmayor. The grapes were put through optical sorting and fermented in stainless steel for 19 days, and the wine matured in American oak barrels for three years with rackings every six months. This is the classical Haro style of Rioja Claret. They found that some special vintages of this wine behaved like a Gran Reserva, with a style that was closer to their 904. So, they wanted to make this consistent from vintage to vintage, a new a style of Gran Reserva, easier to understand than the 904 or 890. From 2012, the wine changes and they replaced the Mazuelo that was used in the past with Graciano, which they think is a grape very apt for Gran Reserva wines. I saw the wine with the 2015 vintage, a more developed nose with tertiary notes and some funkiness. They don’t want this to be the small brother of 904. It’s the entry level for Gran Reserva wines, for a younger generation; it’s fresher and less complex but with good aging potential. In a year when they don’t produce 904, the grapes would go to Viña Arana. The palate reveals quite a lot of tannin and a dry finish. 80,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2019. 13. R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva

    2008 / 750 ml. | Item#50517

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The nose of the 2008 Viña Tondonia Reserva is very elegant, fresh and with an herbal twist, starting to show the complexity of the aged wines that are sometimes still too young when they are released 10+ years from the vintage! The palate is medium-bodied, with lightness and depth, very classical with extra freshness and all that is needed for a long development in bottle. This is the more Tondonia of the two vintages I tasted side by side. There are notes of maple syrup, smoke, licorice and crisp fruit. The palate is more austere, crunchy and reveals the chalkiness of the soils. There’s more definition and precision here.
    JS9595 pts. - - Monday, November 2, 2020
Lots of dried fruit with plum, light raisin, chocolate and toasted oak. Some balsamic undertones. White truffles and dried flowers. Medium body, creamy tannins and savory, balsamic undertones. Extreme and unique, as always. Drink now.
    WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2020
This is a lean and fragrant vintage of Viña Tondonia, the López de Heredia family’s prime Rioja Alta vineyard above a meander along the Ebro River. In 2008, the wine is gamey up front, with sour cherry flavors and a delicate, lasting richness. The wine defines Rioja’s traditional elegance.

  14. Viña Zorzal Garnacha

    2020 / 750 ml. | Item#42170

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Nov 2021
The incredibly young and juicy 2020 Garnacha was produced with grapes from different villages, Corella, Cintruénigo, Fitero and Lerga, hence a regional blend that for the first time contains grapes from the cooler Lerga that adds lower pH, more freshness and complexity to the blend. They do a soft extraction in stainless steel using 20% full clusters and indigenous yeasts, achieving a wine with moderate alcohol (13.47%) and good freshness (pH 3.47). I felt like the wine had gone one step up in complexity and depth from the previous vintage; it’s precise, harmonious, elegant and nuanced and keeps varietal purity. It’s medium-bodied and has very fine tannins with herbal freshness, reminiscent of acid berries and bay leaf. This is a steal! One to buy by the case… 137,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2021.
