Yalumba Museum Reserve Muscat

NV / 375 ml.

Item #: 12559

WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 2/1/2011
Yalumba’s Muscat includes some lots from outside Rutherglen, but it’s still an excellent example of fortified Muscat, featuring hints of caramelized cherries and a sweet, complex mélange of caramel, toffee and chocolate balanced by citrusy freshness.
WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - October 31, 2009
If you like old tawnies from the Douro, here’s an impressive alternative at a remarkable price. The flavors don’t stop, from apricot to lemon, roasted hazelnut, caramel, orange marmalade, honey and honeydew rind — something tangy and slightly rancio, along with something refreshing to hold the wine’s sweetness in check. It’s delicate, in fact, harmonious, with a slow fade that encourages another sip.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2012
Sweet, bordering on syrupy, but nicely held in check by sufficient acidity, allowing the coffee, sassafras, vanilla and clotted cream flavors to glide effortlessly through the expressive finish. Drink now. 2,000 cases imported.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2016
Pale tawny-brown with a green rim, the NV Museum Release Muscat is full of raisins and dates on the nose; the aromatics are very perfumed, spicy and lifted, with some praline notes in the background. This Muscat is so sweet and rich, with notes of liquid sultanas, as well as concentration, length and spice on the palate.

Item #: 51421

SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2020
This full-bodied red is generous yet structured, featuring depth and balance. Ripe flavors of plum and currant mingle with cocoa, clove and mineral notes, supported by mouthcoating tannins and balsamic acidity. Harmonious and long. Best from 2022 through 2037. 2,000 cases made, 225 cases imported.
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
Opaque ruby. Ripe black and blue fruits, licorice, candied flowers and baking spices on the nose, with a hint of espresso in the background. Velvety and broad on the palate, offering lush blackberry and cherry-vanilla flavors that pick up a smoky nuance on the back half. Finished long and pliant, with harmonious tannins adding gentle grip. (Josh Raynolds)

Finca Villacreces Ribera del Duero

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 22402

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, July 26, 2019
A fruity and juicy red with plums and hints of coffee and nutmeg. Full body. Chewy tannins, but plenty in the center palate, suggesting focus and potential with bottle age. Drink after 2021 and onwards.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2019
The 2016 Finca Villacreces was produced to showcase the essence of the estate, mixing grapes from different soils fermented and aged separately and then blended into a combination of 88% Tempranillo, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot that fermented in concrete and oak vats and matured in 225- and 500-liter French oak barrels for 15 months. I was expecting more freshness here, but I found ripe black fruit and something earthy/organic reminiscent of peat and coal, plenty of fine-grained tannins and ripe and earthy flavors. It’s still quite oaky. Surprisingly enough, the 2017 showed better… 71,242 bottles and 535 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2018.

Vega-Sicilia Unico

2010 / 750 ml.

Item #: 54489

VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
Opaque violet. Intensely perfumed, expansive black and blue fruit preserve, potpourri, Moroccan spice and botanical herb scents are complemented by smoky mineral and vanilla flourishes. Sappy, penetrating and deeply concentrated on the palate, offering vibrant, mineral-laced black currant, bitter cherry, chewing tobacco, mocha and floral pastille flavors that deepen and turn sweeter on the back half. Shows superb focus and vibrant, floral lift on the wonderfully long, youthfully tannic finish, which leaves behind cherry liqueur, candied violet and spicecake notes.
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2019
I was surprised by the aromatics of the 2010 Único, cropped from a powerful and concentrated year that delivered this blend of 94% Tinto Fino (aka Tempranillo) and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 14.5% alcohol and a highish pH of 3.87. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in a combination of French and American oak barrels and 20,000-liter oak vats and aged for almost six years. It feels quite ripe and somehow old style, dominated by ripe black fruit, with a rustic and earthy touch. It has an ample palate, concentrated and powerful, with some earthy tannins. 85,185 bottles, 3,362 magnums, 228 double magnums and 36 Imperials were produced. It was bottled in June 2016.

Psi

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 53698

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2023
In 2020, he reached the target he set for himself when PSI first started, to produce around 300,000 bottles (it’s actually 350,000 bottles). The volume of the 2020 PSI is something that’s important, as it has availability and affordability, which is necessary when based on quality, purchasing only grapes from old vines (they use 7,000 plots for this volume!). So, they also started purchasing some of those vineyards in 2022 (they think they need 200 hectares to keep the volume, so the aim is to own maybe half of it). Peter Sisseck remarked that we have to remember 2020 was a warm year, but with the high content of limestone in the soils, the wine has kept very good freshness. They harvested early, before the rain, and they also used some 5% to 10% Garnacha (they could use up to 25%, according to regulations) in the blend to lower the pH of the wine. Below 3.8, he thinks, the wines from the zone are very angular and hard if it’s only Tempranillo, so Garnacha (which doesn’t have as much tannins as Tempranillo) can help with that; but the difficulty is finding Garnacha grapes, so they are considering planting some Garnacha for the future. The bottled wine has all that the sample promised—clean and healthy aromas, floral and elegant, aromatic and with good freshness. The palate is medium-bodied, with elegant tannins, pleasant and easy to drink. 350,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
RP92+92–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2021
The unbottled sample of the 2020 PSI feels young, juicy, very fruit-driven and clean. 2020 was an unusual vintage, first of all because of COVID-19, but it was a year with lots of light, plenty of flowers and a beautiful spring. They were able to harvest quite early and finished two days before the abundant rains (except in Soria, which is a different story) that started on the 20th of September. In Ribera, there will be two different harvests: the wines before the rain and those from after. So, this is very healthy, aromatic and floral, with a spark of freshness but also ripe and round. It’s going to be a crowd-pleaser. It has a bright ruby color, with some 10% Garnacha. It somehow has less Tempranillo character. Volumes are similar to 2019, with around 350,000 bottles that they expect to bottle around June 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, January 5, 2023
Dried lemon rind and blueberries with sliced mushrooms on the nose. Bark too. Medium to full-bodied with firm tannins that are rather minerally and salty in nature. Crushed stone and powerful in the texture. A little rustic but real. Old vine character. Drink or hold.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2023
Plum sauce and pureed blackberry flavors are an enticing entry to this harmonious red, whose fruit profile and accents of black tea, iron and spice are layered with creamy yet sculpted tannins that firm the lasting finish. Drink now through 2028. 29,000 cases made. (Alison Napjus)

This is at once fresh and elegant on first impression, with lovely hints of fragrant Turkish bazaar spices, game and dried mint lacing the crème de cassis, violet, and black and red licorice notes. But gliding across the palate, buoyed by fresh acidity and sculpted tannins, this expands to show deep notes of tarry smoke, fig cake, espresso and iron alongside the appealing fruit and spice. Long and creamy, offering both power and grace. Tinto Fino and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2037. 7,349 cases made, 601 cases imported.

Vega-Sicilia Valbuena 5°

2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 59143

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2021
2017 was marked by the frost of the night between April 27 and 28 that Vega Sicilia fought with their anti-frost towers. The end of the season was warm, and the overall rain was low, 235 liters. The 2017 Valbuena is marked by these circumstances, produced with 94% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 6% Merlot, with good ripeness (14.5% alcohol) and mellow acidity (4.65 grams of tartaric acid and a pH of 3.85). The grapes were cooled down and took three to four days of maceration to start fermenting with indigenous yeasts. The wine matured in a combination of new and used French and American 225-liter oak barrels and 21,000-liter oak vats for almost three years. The result, for whatever reason, was nothing short of spectacular. The wine is perfumed, floral, expressive and balsamic like few vintages before. It doesn’t feel like a 2017 at all; it is harmonious, and the tannins were fine. It’s an amazing Valbuena that clearly transcends the character of the vintage. What I see here is that since 2010, the wine has a very high consistency. And in 2017 it excels. 170,071 bottles, 5,516 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in June 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)
JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, February 3, 2022
This shows wonderful aromas of blackberries, violets and sandalwood with vanilla undertones. Full-bodied with racy tannins and gorgeous fruit. Linear and very long. Slightly chewy. Needs time to come together, but already excellent quality. Drink after 2023.
WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 06/22
Faced with a challenging vintage early in his tenure as the technical director of Vega Sicilia, Gonzalo Iturriaga chose to go gentle on the grapes. The vines had budded into a warm spring, were hit hard by frost, then struggled to mature their fruit through a dry season. Harvesting early, Iturriaga diminished the percentage of new oak barrels for the first year of aging and moved the wine into wooden casks for the second year, offering what at first appears to be an austere wine. Patience takes this past its earthy notes of salted plum and under-ripe black currant. It remains savory as the tannins soften toward green herb and the flavors open to anise. A wine of depth and textural elegance, this 2017 shows the talent of the vineyard whether you give it hours in a decanter now or cellar it for ten years.

Aalto

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 59141

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2023
The nose of the red 2020 Aalto comes blasting with tons of toasted oak, spice, smoke and more toast, ripe berries and a luxurious creaminess like the finest modern wines from the turn of the century. This is predictable but exactly what their customers are looking for, with ripe berries, generous oak and a velvety palate with volume, soft tannins and mellow acidity. It matured in French and American oak barrels for 18 months. Some things never change. 330,000 bottles. It was bottled in July 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 5, 2022
Fine spice and vanilla to the blackberries, mussels, sandalwood, minerals, black walnuts and dark chocolate. Quite well-judged and balanced on the palate, showing a mid-palate that is about freshness, fruit and fluidity, together with tight, nicely grippy tannins. Juicy, chewy and long. Drinkable now, but better from 2024.

California Cabernet drinkers need to discover the wines of Ribera del Duero. These wines may be some of the most lush, full-bodied, oak-scented, hedonistically-styled wines to be coming out of Europe today.

Top-end Ribera del Duero wines traditionally see long periods of aging in new oak (often American, sometimes French), imparting a roasted character at once recognizable and unique (think espresso roast, toasted coconut, toffee, butterscotch and vanilla). Great Ribera del Duero has the depth, richness and deliciousness of high-end California Cabernet (and usually at a better price), along with an element of freshness so often lacking in blockbuster Cabs.
