When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2019 Pinot Noir The South Slope Vineyard is one of the deeper, earthier wines in the range. Wild cherry, tobacco, cedar, dried autumn leaves and iron bring out a more virile side of Pinot. There is a good bit of density, but in the laid-back style of the vintage here.

The 2019 Pinot Noir The North Slope Vineyard offers lovely mid-palate depth to play off strong floral, savory notes. I find the North Slope a bit uncharacteristic in its vegetal character, which I suspect is related to machine harvesting for some of this fruit.

Marie Weiss Brut Champagne

NV / 750 ml.

Item #: 25331

SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2018
A well-balanced Champagne, with a vibrant backbone of acidity and a creamy mousse, this offers spice and tea rose accents to the crushed white cherry, toasty and candied lemon zest flavors. Clean-cut finish. Disgorged October 2017. Drink now through 2020. 2,500 cases made.
ST9090 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2011
Light, bright yellow. Pear, peach and smoky lees on the nose, with complicating notes of anise and iodine. A spicy, gently chewy midweight offering zesty citrus and orchard fruit flavors and a touch of honeysuckle. Shows very good energy and definition on the finish, with the smoke and anise notes echoing.
RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Dec 2009
The NV Brut is straightforward and accessible, with lovely depth in its fruit. The wine’s balance and length are both commendable, and the toasty, creamy finish rounds things out nicely. Anticipated maturity: 2009–2012.
VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2015
Pale gold. Ripe nectarine and yellow plum on the fragrant nose, with a subtle undercurrent of smoky lees. Round and fleshy on the palate, offering spicy orchard and pit fruit flavors, gentle acidity and a hint of sweet butter. In an easygoing, accessible style, finishing with good breadth and cling.

Mirabelle Brut Rosé

NV / 750 ml.

Item #: 27207

RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2015
It’s attractive, but even better is the outstanding NV Mirabelle Brut Rosé, 64% Pinot Noir and 36% Chardonnay. This shows a light pink color, beautiful delicate notes of strawberries and currants, crisp acids, a fresh, lively zesty style and medium body. Both of these are meant to be drunk upon release and are probably at their best within the first year or two of aging.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2015
This bubbly from Schramsberg has a deepish, salmon color and peach, melon and ginger cookie aromas. It combines crispness and finesse, fruit with complexity. Hints of almond, walnut and subtle spices come out on the lingering finish.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2017
Expressive watermelon and strawberry aromas open to crisp yet rich flavors of red apple and spiced vanilla. Drink now. 19,000 cases made.

Blending 59% Pinot Noir and 41% Chardonnay, all estate-grown, this memorable sparkler shows a ripe strawberry flavor that is rich and exuberant. It finds balance in a contrast of Meyer lemon, tangerine and lingering minerality.
