Côt, Pressac, Auxerrois...Malbec wears numerous hats throughout the wine regions of France. In Bordeaux, Malbec is one of the five permitted red grapes, where it is grown in small quantities and used sparingly to add structure and color to the blend. In Southwest France, Malbec is the most widely planted grape of the Cahors region.

While France has many names for it and other regions/countries like California, Australia, and South Africa grow Malbec, it's in the high altitude vineyards and dry climate of Argentina that Malbec wine outclasses most of these other variants, including those from France. The grape thrives just about anywhere in that arid, sunny land, producing wines that are as approachable as a juicy Merlot, though they may also be as structured and long-lived as a Cabernet Sauvignon. Full-bodied and packed with blackberry, dark cherry, olive, mulberry and plum, and sometimes laced with a dash of mocha, vanilla or tobacco, Malbec wine is anything but a skimpy red.

A firm and silky wine with soft tannins and a juicy finish. Medium body. Bright and clean. Drink now.
    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2016
The 2015 Alamos Red Blend is a classical Mendoza blend of Malbec, Bonarda and Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend that changes slightly with the year, but is always Malbec-based. It has a fruit-driven, harmonious nose and a balanced palate with good depth and fine-grained tannins. This feels like a more expensive wine — serious, polished and elegant. 24,000 bottles.

Roasted, woodsy, rubbery aromas are gamy and staunch, with berry notes interspersed. Grabby, rubbery tannins make for a rugged palate, while roasted plum and gamy flavors are a touch salty. A tannic finish doesn’t change much.

    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2016
The juicy and unoaked 2015 Malbec Clásico represents the variety in the Mendoza province, with bright red fruit, approachable and easy to understand through sourcing grapes from different zones, but looking for cooler soils rich in sand and with some clay and lime. 2015 represents a big change for this bottling, which has a higher percentage of grapes from the Valle de Uco. The destemmed grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and the wine was kept in concrete vats for one year before bottling. The fruit is ripe, fruit-driven, with a juicy palate, with fine tannins and subdued minerality. The wine is subtle and balanced, easy to drink. An improvement over past vintages. This has to be one of the best values in Mendoza. There are eight different lots, totaling some 750,000 bottles.

The 2013 Malbec Reserva is sourced from Vista Flores and Chacayes in the Valle de Uco where they look for calcareous soils on the alluvial terraces of the Arroyo Grande river. The wine matured in untoasted 3,500-liter oak foudres for 18 months. The wine has the bright red fruit and unnoticeable oak profile of the wines from Altos las Hormigas. It is very fresh and shinny in a vintage like 2013. There are raspberries, wild strawberries and red currants, with subtle spices and a medium-bodied palate with very fine tannins and great acidity that makes it really easy to drink and pleasant. Great Malbec at a very attractive price. 72,912 bottles produced.
