Shop for Tempranillo

When it comes to Spanish wines, Tempranillo takes center stage. Tempranillo is to Spain what Cabernet is to California. This black grape wine flourishes in the harsh climate of the Rioja zones, Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, as well as in the acclaimed Ribera del Duero, but is still flexible enough to succeed in some of Spain's southern wine regions, as well.

Just as it succeeds in several climates, The Tempranillo grape also enjoys success in both single varietal and blend wines. In Rioja, it's often blended with Grenache to create some of the region's most sophisticated, complex, and heralded wines. Elsewhere, winemakers have been known to blend Tempranillo with Syrah and even Cabernet.

Deep ruby. Intense, floral scents of ripe cherry and dark berries, with suggestions of exotic spices and minerals. Juicy and vibrant on the palate, with a velvety texture and very good thrust to the ripe cherry, black raspberry and floral pastille flavors. Spicy, fresh and toasty on the back, with lingering notes of vanilla and woodsmoke. This drinks very well right now but has the depth to age effortlessly.

    Chris Ringland Shiraz

    2002 / 750 ml. | Item#26671

    RP100100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Oct 2007
It is difficult to say that Chris Ringland’s latest Shiraz is his best to date because he has set the bar so high. The 2002 Shiraz “Chris Ringland,” sourced from a vineyard planted in 1910 with yields of 1 ton per acre, comes from a vintage Ringland describes as “too good to be true.” The wine took 18 months to go through malolactic fermentation. Purple/black-colored, it offers up a killer perfume of mineral, scorched earth, truffle, fresh asphalt, licorice, blueberry, and blackberry. Full-bodied, dense, and thick, it has fabulous spicy, black fruit flavors, great balance, and enough structure to drink well for 30–40 years. It is a truly monumental Shiraz on a level with the best Syrahs of Guigal, Chave, Chapoutier, Bratasiuk, and Krankl. To put the 2002 in some context, Ringland also presented the 1999 (99 points), the 2000 (97 points), and the 2001 (100 points). I’m convinced!

    2010 / 750 ml. | Item#42780

    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2015
Vibrant and spicy, this lively red delivers bright cherry, berry, vanilla and toasty flavors, with citrusy acidity and light, firm tannins. Focused and graceful. Drink now through 2020. 10,000 cases imported.
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2015
Bright ruby-red. Sexy, oak-spiced aromas of ripe cherry and cassis, with pipe tobacco and rose oil nuances adding complexity. Supple and expansive on the palate, offering gently sweet dark fruit flavors lifted and clarified by juicy acidity. Approachable now but I’ll bet that this nicely concentrated, fruit-driven wine will reward at least another several years of cellaring.
    WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2015
An oaky opening with aromas of coconut, dried cheese, herbs, wood resin and berry fruits introduces a fresh, healthy palate with power but also resiny stickiness. Lightly baked cherry and plum flavors finish with lingering spice and wood notes. Drink through 2020.

    Creta Roble

    2013 / 750 ml. | Item#28186

    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jul 2015
The 2013 Creta Roble, is also a custom cuvée from importer Eric Solomon. Made from 60-plus-year-old vines from an area of Ribera del Duera known as La Horra (Pingus and Aalto emerged from this area as well). This expansive, savory, complex, deep ruby/purple red wine shows notes of new saddle leather, black and red currants, has a savory, medium-bodied expansive mouthfeel, with loads of black fruits, licorice, subtle smoke and earth. This is a lovely, sexy, opulent style of wine to drink over the next 4–5 years.
