When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2021 Chardonnay Stone Cote Vineyard is also a youthful golden hue, with aromas of fresh peach, flinty earth, and lemon rind. Full-bodied, it boasts a supple and soft texture, with round fruit up front and fresh lift on the finish. Offering up a luxurious feel on the palate, with well-managed notes of sweet baking spices, honeydew melon, and wet stone, it’s long on the palate and has a good finish. Drink 2024–2030. Perfumed aromas of red and black cherries, red licorice, cooking spice and rose water. Medium-to full-bodied with steady acidity that helps to articulate the dark-fruit and tobacco flavors, but retains freshness throughout. Sandy, easy-going tannins. Wet-stone finish. 100% estate grown. Drink now. Screw cap. (James Suckling)

The 2020 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is flush with pristine fruit on the nose, including cherry candy, crushed flowers, and forest floor. The palate is fresh with red raspberry and cinnamon, and it has refreshing acidity on the finish. This is a lovely, classic wine for drinking over the next couple of years. (Audrey Frick)

The 2020 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is terrific and also one of the highlights of this very challenging year. A burst of red/purplish berry fruit, spice, lavender and rose petal is immediately alluring. There is a bit of grippiness here, but nothing a bit of aeration won’t take care of. (Antonio Galloni)

A juicy, fruity red with plum, blueberry, chocolate and some hazelnut. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and a delicious finish. Always balanced and excellent quality. Drink in 2022.
