When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

This shows aromas of ripe pears and pineapple with honeysuckle, toffee and cooked oranges. Creamy and mellow with a full body, ripe fruit and hints of salted butter at the end. Polished and long. Drink now or hold. (James Suckling)

The nose of this wine is energetic and complex, with Bosc pear, crème brûlée and chalk aromas swirling. The palate is mineral driven, but the oak framework lends structure and weight to the core of pear, almond skin and dried orange peel flavors. This wine lingers on the finish with hints of grilled bread, vanilla bean and very ripe citrus. (Tom Capo)

A spicy, toasty note lingers above the core of apple pastry and grilled peach, with notes of clove and nutmeg on a medium frame. Drink now. 100,000 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

Full bodied, approachable and absolutely appetizing, Hahn’s Merlot, which integrates 22% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Zinfandel into the mix has rich, mouth-coating tannins well met by the concentrated fruit structure. Find notes of red and black plum, boysenberry, chocolate, vanilla, nutmeg, toasted wood, fennel fronds, cinnamon, star anise and walnut skins. (Stacy Briscoe)

This wine’s salted caramel scent has a smoky overlay, adorning red cherry and red plum accents, simple and lean, for a steak sandwich.

Leads with mulled cherry and plum notes, with hints of warm licorice and fruitcake, plus red tea filling in on the finish. Reveals fresh underlying acidity that extends the finish nicely. Drink now through 2026. 25,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)

This is a rich, enjoyable and widely available blend of 69% Grenache, 29% Syrah and 2% Mourvèdre. Aromas of blackberry, cardamom, pepper and iodine on the nose lead into a ripe palate of baked strawberry, cherry, nutmeg and cinnamon roll flavors. (Matt Kettmann)
