In spite of the generous ripeness, this remains surprisingly cool and delicate with a flinty note nicely complementing the candied lemon and lime, vanilla and jasmine aromas. Just the right amount of creaminess on the mid-palate to give this a silky quality. Long, refined mineral finish that pulls you back for more. Drink or hold.

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The 2019 Mâcon La Roche-Vineuse Le Clos has a perfumed, floral bouquet, well-defined with yellow plum, white tea and pressed flower scents. Elegant. The palate is well balanced though just a bit too oak-driven on the mid-palate; the oak dominates the finish at the expense of terroir-expression. Tasted blind at the BIVB Maconnais tasting. The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières exhibits scents of pear, toasted almonds and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, bright and chalky, it’s deep and concentrated, with a mouthwatering, delicately oak-inflected finish.
VN90+90–92 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru, a majority of the vines under 20 years old, was picked on 10 September. It is well-defined on the nose with light orange rind and very subtle muscat-like aromas, tight and benefitting from modest aeration. The palate is well balanced with a lightly spiced opening. There is a fine bead of acidity here given the warmth of the growing season, hints of praline and almond shaving towards the composed finish.

An impressive wine for this underrated appellation, this has exactly what you expect from a good white Burgundy, marrying floral, ginger and candied-citrus character with a medium body, some nice mid-palate richness and mineral acidity. The touch of oak supports the cool, elegant finish nicely. (James Suckling)
