When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

This alcohol-reduced wine begins with subdued aroma of lemon wedge, apple and honeysuckle on the nose. There’s a steely minerality to the palate, which is thinner in texture and subtle in citrus flavors. (Matt Kettmann)

The 2020 Chardonnay Estates Collection Camelot Highlands is luxurious, with perfumed notes of custard, candied pear, and lime blossom. The palate is ripe and inviting, offering confectionary spiced pear, peaches with orange citrus, and a long finish. Drink over the next 3–6 years. (Audrey Frick)

Dried lemon, orange peel, apple-flesh, white-flower and sea-salt aromas make for a compelling introduction to this bottling. The flavors warm up on the sip, where toasted hazelnut, browned butter and salted nectarine flavors align. (Matt Kettmann)

Aromas of dried orange peel, lemon grass and hay. Medium-bodied with lovely complexity. Herbs and dried citrus meld together, with a hint of white tea adding intrigue. Well composed. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

A non-malolactic wine—made in the spirit of the Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that impressed at the Paris tasting in 1976—Grgich’s 2020 Estate Grown Chardonnay features gentle toasty notes, a hint of roasted hazelnut, plus bright pineapple and citrus fruit. It’s medium-bodied, zesty and refreshing, with a long, clean finish. (Joe Czerwinski)

Rincon Vineyard Chardonnay

JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/29/2022
The lightly hued 2020 Chardonnay Done & Done Rincon Vineyard comes from the Arroyo Grande and was brought up in 50% new barrels. It has a beautiful, exotic array of acacia flowers, honeyed orange blossom, crushed citrus, and white flowers, with just a kiss of background toasty oak and chalky minerality. Ripe, opulent, and beautifully textured, it stays lively and fresh on the palate, with good acidity and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
