When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

I loved the nose on the 2019 Chardonnay Estate, and this white would be a great introduction for readers looking to understand the style (and quality) of this terrific estate. Lots of clean stone fruits, classy oak, and some salty mineral all define the bouquet, and it’s medium-bodied, textured, and beautifully balanced. It should have 4–5 years or more of longevity. Opulent aromas of ripe pear, gardenia, apple and coconut show on the nose of this bottling. It’s racy with acidity on the sip, where a tart lemon flavor leads into apple blossom, poached pear and pineapple, with a slight butter tone on the finish.
SP8787 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021
Ripe citrus and Asian pear flavors show lots of savory and lemongrass accents, with notes of shiso leaf on the finish. Drink now. 524,000 cases made.

A very intense, perfectly ripe and seamless cabernet that delivers a wealth of dark berries, blue fruits ad blackberry on the nose with attractively integrated oak spice, earth, black truffle and violet-like perfume. The palate has an extraordinary array of fine, layered tannins and a long fresh and alluringly succulent finish that holds fresh and long. Superb cabernet. Drink or hold.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 8/1/2020
A 100% varietal, this lovely, structured and layered wine tastes distinctly of the appellation — a mix of sage, dust and crushed rock complemented by cedar and dried herb. The fruit is elusively nuanced in red and black currant as well as cassis, concentrated enough to consider further aging. Enjoy from 2026–2030.

Subtle oak spices mingle with lots of golden apple, yellow peach and pineapple flavors in this lightly oaked, medium-bodied wine that was barrel-fermented with indigenous yeast. (Jim Gordon)

A deep, layered red offering blackberries and currants with dark chocolate and mushrooms. It’s full and intense with fine, creamy tannins that are soft and beautiful. Hints of chocolate and walnuts at the end. Drinkable now, but better after 2022.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2020
Solidly built, featuring a core of plum and blackberry notes, threaded with mesquite, mineral and savory hints. The finish shows a twinge of the rustic tannins that mark many 2017s, but ample fruit keeps them well-absorbed. Best from 2021 through 2029. 4,621 cases made. (James Molesworth)
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 8/1/2020
This is a well-made, nicely priced wine that overdelivers on its price point, providing earthy truffle, pencil shavings and cedar characteristics. Classically styled, balanced and elegant, it is savory, firm in tannin and nuanced in oak, with lasting notes of currant and cassis. (Virginie Boone)
