Likably tart aromas of lime pith and grapefruit peel are warmed by almond and lifted by spearmint on the nose of this bottling. The palate is rounded in expression, with baked melon, lemon and hazelnut flavors finishing on a flinty note. (Matt Kettmann)

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Ripe with tropical perfume, the 2021 Chardonnay Estate pours a youthful yellow/silver hue and displays notes of jasmine, tangerine, and quince. Full-bodied and juicy on the palate, it packs in expansive notes of ripe melon, honeyed citrus, and loads of flowers. It’s a blousy style of white but has a clean finish. Drink it over the next couple of years. (Audrey Frick)

This full-bodied and beautifully balanced wine is powered by energized fruit acidity, giving it a lively mouthfeel, vivid green apple and lemon zest flavors and a snappy finish, while subtle oak notes remain secondary. Fermented in oak barrels and stainless barrels, and matured without maloactic conversion, the wine is super refreshing, clean and mouth-watering and should only get more complex and smooth with time. Best from 2024–2031. (Jim Gordon)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2023
Always an impressive bottling, the 2021 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch was barrel fermented in a 75% new French oak and 25% stainless steel. Boasting fabulous aromas of lemon curd, apple, pear and pencil shavings, this non-malolactic Chardonnay is full-bodied, round and generous on the palate, then crisp and refreshing on the finish. If it’s not as complex or rich as the very best Chardonnays California has to offer, it’s not that far behind, and the pricing and availability (6000 cases produced) remain reasonable for a wine of this quality. Cooked apple, lemon rind and flint on the nose. Full-bodied with plenty of fruit and a delicious finish. Some phenolic tension, too. Delicious with a serious sense. Drink now. Screw cap. (James Suckling)

There’s a steely edge to the pear, apple and crisp pineapple aromas on the nose of this bottling. The palate sizzles with acidity and offers a touch of grip, with key lime pie flavors most prevalent. (Matt Kettmann)
