Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Hengst Gewurztraminer 2005 / 375 ml.

Item#: 24742

ST9393 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jul/Aug 2007
Bright yellow. Mirabelle, marzipan and nutmeg on the expressive nose. Sweet, dense and highly concentrated, with real generosity and freshness to its fruit flavors. There’s a spiciness here from botrytis. Finishes tactile and powerful. With its 14.4% alcohol and 48 g/l r.s., this could hardly be more different in its balance from the dry and somewhat topheavy 2004, which is 16.2%, with just 4 grams of sugar. It would be a shame to drink this too soon.

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Full yellow. Captivating aromas of orange peel, minerals and honey, with sweaty suggestions of vineyard peach and cumin. Wonderfully bracing and precise, with great penetration and cut to its flavors of mandarin orange, powdered stone and graphite. The tactile finish suggests dusty dry extract more than it does tannins. A very Germanic style of late-harvest wine, with an exhilarating purity to its botrytis and an impression of strong tartaric acidity. This is 9% alcohol, with 97 grams of residual sugar.

Fresh, even racy, with grapefruit, lemon and honey aromas and flavors matched to an elegant profile. Still tightly wound, with a vivid structure. Needs time to open and gain complexity. Best from 2009 through 2020. 300 cases made.
