Aromas of fresh tropical fruits, thyme and an array of colored flowers. Medium-bodied with a silky texture. Not as flamboyant on the palate as the nose leads you to believe, but fruity all the same. A bit short. Drink now.

This light and fresh gewurz has so much rose-water character and a touch of candied angelica. Discreet tannins, but lively acidity. Very well crafted, but a bit simple at the finish. Drink now. Screw cap.

Here’s a classic, spicy Alsace gewurztraminer that’s ripe and generous (14% alcohol), but with more discreet tannins and a drier finish than most examples of this category. That makes it so much easier to drink! Drink now.

ST9393 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Jul/Aug 2007
Bright yellow. Mirabelle, marzipan and nutmeg on the expressive nose. Sweet, dense and highly concentrated, with real generosity and freshness to its fruit flavors. There’s a spiciness here from botrytis. Finishes tactile and powerful. With its 14.4% alcohol and 48 g/l r.s., this could hardly be more different in its balance from the dry and somewhat topheavy 2004, which is 16.2%, with just 4 grams of sugar. It would be a shame to drink this too soon.

Semeli Espera

Late Harvest Gewürztraminer
2008 / 500 ml.

Item #: 31251

RP8686 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Feb 2011
The 2008 GEWURZTRAMINER LATE HARVEST “ESPERA” is from a Nemea vineyard. The price quoted is for a 375ml bottle. Sweet and friendly, this dessert wine is initially just sugary fun, easygoing and charming, dribbling the sugar over the palate and having just a little varietal bitterness to cut the sweet nuances. With time and air, it becomes drier and the varietal character comes to the fore a bit more, less a dessert wine and more of an off-dry wine that might find a place on some tables with food. There is not a lot of structure or depth, and it flattens quickly, but it is pleasing and drinks nicely. I’d drink it young. Drink now–2012.

Boundary Breaks Vineyard Gewürztraminer

2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 47187

SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2021
This packs some punch, offering extroverted nectarine, lychee and pink grapefruit notes, with a plump, spicy finish. Drink now. 2,730 cases made.
RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Jun 2021
The 2020 Gewürztraminer comes in with eight grams of residual sugar this year, 6.4 of total acidity and 13.5% alcohol. This is sourced from vines planted in 2013 and 2017. In its youth, this shows off its sugar a bit, avoiding the bitter finish of very dry Gewürztraminer. It also hides the spice a little, but the lychee nuances come through with air and warmth. It adds respectable depth and it tastes great. It has more depth than the 2018 but not necessarily more character. In its uncomplicated and easy style, this is fun to drink, especially now. I’m less sure of how it will age; it’s more likely to go down than up, but if you drink it young, you won’t have to worry about it.

RP88+88–89 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Jun 2021
The 2020 Gewürztraminer is a bit off-dry (eight grams per liter of residual sugar, plus 6.5 of total acidity). It comes in with 14.1% alcohol. This was a few weeks from bottling and a month or so from release when tasted. Yum. This impeccably balanced Gewürz uses its sugar just right, balancing the bitterness and giving the grape a friendly demeanor. It never tastes sweet. It has good concentration and the bit of spice you want if you are a fan of the grape, without hitting you over the head too much. In other words, even those who are not big fans of the style can enjoy it. It adds the classic aromatics. It tastes great and it will drink well young. Holding it a long time probably will not be the best idea, but it certainly has the stuffing and structure to hold well for a few years. (Mark Squires)

Shop for Gewurztraminer

The Traminer family of grapes stretches back to antiquity. The aromatic "musque" of Gewurztraminer we know today appeared as a mutation of the less aromatic variety Red Traminer. "Gewurz" in German translates to spice and the origins of the Traminer grape have been traced to the German-speaking town of Tramin in northern Italy. Here, the term "gewurz" (meaning spice) was prefixed to the grape name to describe its crisp, spicy attributes.

The aromas of Gewürztraminer often include lychee, roses, passion fruit and other floral notes. Flavors may include white peach, tangerine, mango, orange, pineapple, pear, cinnamon and ginger. The best Gewürztraminer from around the world typically comes from Alsace, Germany, Austria, Canada, and the USA. In addition, many wonderful local examples exist including Hermann Wiemer and Dr. Frank -- both from the Finger Lakes region here in New York State.
