Hosmer Dry Riesling 2020 / 750 ml.

Item#: 18066

SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2022
A dry, taut version, with a hint of bitter almond peeking through the core of white peach and honeysuckle notes. There’s a nice zing to the finish. Drink now through 2025. 650 cases made.
RP8787 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 12th May 2022
The 2020 Dry Riesling comes in at 12.2% alcohol, three grams per liter of residual sugar and 8.1 of total acidity. Unctuous texture precedes a focused finish, but this seems surprisingly friendly. Considering that it is nicely dry on paper, this seems relatively rich and fruity, a Riesling without a lot of classic character but one that is easy to adore and in a crowd-pleasing style. This seemed to me to be a step short of distinction, even while being very appealing. It probably won’t be the favorite for Riesling purists, but it will be a wine that is hard to dislike on its own terms. I’d drink this very young, no matter how long it theoretically lasts.

Where It's From

District / Finger Lakes

View more wines from Finger Lakes

Officially established in 1982, the Finger Lakes region has a storied history of wine production in New York State and is recognized the world over. The deep glacially formed lakes offer sublime growing conditions thanks to the sloping hillsides and moderating effect the lakes have on the temperature of the surrounding area.

The main growing regions are centered around Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake (which each have their own AVAs) but quality wine is being made throughout the region. Riesling is the belle of the ball in the Finger Lakes (oftentimes being compared to the Rieslings of Germany) but success has been had with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and others.

Seeing as our store is located in the midst of New York's wine regions, we have a special affinity for New York wines. And so should you! New York is now producing some of the world's best Rieslings and Pinot Noirs, and there are lots of other terrific wines made from grapes like Catawba, Niagara, Cabernet Franc and others being produced here, as well. Every year, the quality, reputation, and demand for New York wines continue to soar. What are you waiting for? Uncork New York!

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

A concentrated and spicy dry riesling that has tons of pink-grapefruit, apricot and mirabelle aromas. Impressive textural complexity, yet this still retains wonderful freshness and delicacy. Extremely long, delicious finish. A cuvée of 60% Josef vineyard, 20% Magdalena vineyard and 20% HJW vineyards. Drink or hold.

This blend of estate vineyards is consistently a favorite year over year. The 2020 delivers intense aromas of fennel pollen, lemon oil, yellow apple, tangerine and sliced ginger, making it utterly compelling. Ample apple and stone fruit flavors blend with earthy, spicy elements on the dry palate, with well placed acidity and a pithy texture lending support. (Alexander Peartree)

Winegrower Fred Merwarth finds that his Josef Vineyard ripens at just the right level for a dry style, so he focuses this Reserve on that site. The wine is more lemony and citrus-based than the 2020 Dry Riesling (also recommended here). It has a mildly herbal attack giving way to a midweight mouthfeel that’s comfortable and slightly tense, especially in the finish. For herb-roasted halibut.
RP92+92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 21st Apr 2022
The 2020 Dry Riesling Reserve comes in with eight grams of residual sugar and 12.7% alcohol and is perceptibly dry. It is a blend of 60% grapes from the Josef Vineyard, 22% from Magdalena and 18% from HJW, meaning that it has every chance to be a great wine, just like the pricier single-vineyard offerings. It is consistently one of the best intersections in the lineup for quality and price. This year it is about as good as anything in the lineup, just like last year. Deep and lingering on the finish, it has controlled power, the acidity soaked up by the concentration and countered by the modest sugar. It’s delicious but serious, sturdy but lively. It will be interesting to see how this compares with its predecessor, the 2019, as they both age. I suspect the 2019 will win as time goes on, but this is a very respectable competitor today and a pretty terrific wine with some potential upside in the cellar. (Mark Squires)

This youthful dry riesling has a slew of floral and herbal nuances, together with delicate stone-fruit and wild-berry notes. So elegant, in spite of the full, juicy fruit on the palate. The long, wet-stone finish is racy and pristine. Made with grapes from the estate vineyard on Keuka Lake. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 12th May 2022
The 2020 Dry Riesling Eugenia comes in with three grams of residual sugar against 6.9 of total acidity and 12.9% alcohol. This is a single-vineyard selection from 1968 vines on soils with high slate content. The winery calls it their best Riesling plot. This is a surprisingly friendly wine this year, perhaps typical of the vintage. Maybe one day it will close down, but not today. It is splendid, showing off fine depth, a fruity demeanor and respectable power. As fruity as it is, it shows off a little tension on the finish too. This is very accessible this year, but it’s still likely to improve in the cellar. The winery is a strong proponent of the 2020 vintage (and they aren’t the only ones), but as impressive as this is, and granting that both are not here together, I’d take the 2019 just now. That may be slower-developing, but in a few years, a comparison will be intriguing. They are both very fine.

A beautifully made crowd-pleaser, which is as vibrant and light-footed as it is juicy and peachy. Super-fresh with tons of garden-herb character that makes it hard to believe this has 28 grams per liter of unfermented grape sweetness. Wild-fermented in stainless steel. Vegan. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Aromas of canned pear and apple are met with candied white grapefruit and fennel pollen on the nose. Apple and pineapple flavors are jolted up by a kick of tonic on the palate. This sweet Riesling ends brisk and clean on the quick finish. (Alexander Peartree)

Concentrated tones of apple, white grapefruit, citrus perfume and peach make for a deep well of aromas on the nose. There’s real depth to the palate, where a gentle, pithy texture is lifted by juicy pome and stone fruit. It has an almost oily feel, yet that texture is quickly put to rest by the pervasive drive of the zesty acidity. It’s one to sip, savor and, if you can, cellar. Drink now–2030.

Attractive nose of freshly picked blackcurrants with hints of blackcurrant leaf and mint adding complexity. Excellent balance of ripe fruit and fine tannins on the medium-bodied palate, ending with a long, velvety finish that’s lit up by mineral freshness. Matured in neutral oak casks. Drink or hold.
