Ravines Dry Riesling, Argetsinger Vineyard 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 48674

SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Nicely focused from the start, with mouthwatering acidity coursing beneath yellow apple, white peach and jasmine notes. Showing a serious snap of slate on the finish, this distinctive wine still has some evolution ahead of it. Drink now through 2026. 974 cases made.
RP91+91+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Jun 2021
The 2017 Riesling Argetsinger Vineyard, another late release, has just three grams of sugar (owner Morton Hallgren said, “Our sugar analysis is only accurate down to plus or minus one gram per liter, so it can be between two and four grams per liter”) plus eight grams of total acidity. It comes in at 12.7% alcohol. Steely, deep and perhaps a touch reductive, this powerful Riesling is another classic from this vineyard. It’s not for the shy, though, and winemaker Morton Hallgren has built this for the long haul. As it airs out and warms, this gripping Riesling becomes a little friendlier, but only a little. It’s not entirely clear where the ceiling is for this wine just yet, but let’s start here and see where it goes in time. It does need to come into better balance. If you like your Rieslings softer and sweeter, this isn’t going to be for you. It definitely needs a food pairing — and perhaps a bit more cellar time.

Where It's From

District / Finger Lakes

View more wines from Finger Lakes

Officially established in 1982, the Finger Lakes region has a storied history of wine production in New York State and is recognized the world over. The deep glacially formed lakes offer sublime growing conditions thanks to the sloping hillsides and moderating effect the lakes have on the temperature of the surrounding area.

The main growing regions are centered around Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake (which each have their own AVAs) but quality wine is being made throughout the region. Riesling is the belle of the ball in the Finger Lakes (oftentimes being compared to the Rieslings of Germany) but success has been had with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and others.

Region / New York

Seeing as our store is located in the midst of New York's wine regions, we have a special affinity for New York wines. And so should you! New York is now producing some of the world's best Rieslings and Pinot Noirs, and there are lots of other terrific wines made from grapes like Catawba, Niagara, Cabernet Franc and others being produced here, as well. Every year, the quality, reputation, and demand for New York wines continue to soar. What are you waiting for? Uncork New York!

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Very impressive limes, grapefruit and tangerines with a pristine, fragrant edge. The palate has exceptional length and balance with terrific concentration of lime and lemon flavor. Explosive, mineral depth. Wow! Drink now. Screw cap.

Ravines Gewurztraminer 2020 / 750 ml.

Item #: 55284

RP88+88–89 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Jun 2021
The 2020 Gewürztraminer is a bit off-dry (eight grams per liter of residual sugar, plus 6.5 of total acidity). It comes in with 14.1% alcohol. This was a few weeks from bottling and a month or so from release when tasted. Yum. This impeccably balanced Gewürz uses its sugar just right, balancing the bitterness and giving the grape a friendly demeanor. It never tastes sweet. It has good concentration and the bit of spice you want if you are a fan of the grape, without hitting you over the head too much. In other words, even those who are not big fans of the style can enjoy it. It adds the classic aromatics. It tastes great and it will drink well young. Holding it a long time probably will not be the best idea, but it certainly has the stuffing and structure to hold well for a few years. (Mark Squires)

WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 06/22
This leads with a beguiling scent of camellia and lemon, overlying a pineapple depth of flavor and granular texture. Its flavors are elegant and light, with a phenolic persistence that adds some grip. It’s a lot of wine for the price.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022
Enticing, with bright honeysuckle and orange blossom notes leading the way, backed by Meyer lemon, white peach and clementine flavors at the core. The racy, fresh finish has nice tension, with a quinine note lingering. Drink now through 2025. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 5,640 cases made. (James Molesworth)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 21st Apr 2022
The 2019 Dry Riesling is a roughly equal blend of Seneca Lake’s 16 Falls and White Springs vineyards (with just a dollop from Keuka Lake). It’s dry (four grams of sugar, with 9.2 grams of total acidity) and comes in at 12.5% alcohol. This drinks well, perhaps thanks to having that extra year of bottle aging. The acidity, though evident, is well integrated and countered by the fruit. There’s plenty of power, but it is never shrill. The juicy finish is also filled with fruit. This is a super Dry Riesling and a nice bargain. It should age well and develop more, but it is going to be hard to resist this summer. (Mark Squires)
