Where It's From

District / Finger Lakes

View more wines from Finger Lakes

Officially established in 1982, the Finger Lakes region has a storied history of wine production in New York State and is recognized the world over. The deep glacially formed lakes offer sublime growing conditions thanks to the sloping hillsides and moderating effect the lakes have on the temperature of the surrounding area.

The main growing regions are centered around Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake (which each have their own AVAs) but quality wine is being made throughout the region. Riesling is the belle of the ball in the Finger Lakes (oftentimes being compared to the Rieslings of Germany) but success has been had with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and others.

New York is now producing some of the world's best Rieslings and Pinot Noirs, and there are lots of other terrific wines made from grapes like Catawba, Niagara, Cabernet Franc and others being produced here, as well. Every year, the quality, reputation, and demand for New York wines continue to soar. What are you waiting for? Uncork New York!

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Very impressive limes, grapefruit and tangerines with a pristine, fragrant edge. The palate has exceptional length and balance with terrific concentration of lime and lemon flavor. Explosive, mineral depth. Wow! Drink now. Screw cap.

Nicely focused from the start, with mouthwatering acidity coursing beneath yellow apple, white peach and jasmine notes. Showing a serious snap of slate on the finish, this distinctive wine still has some evolution ahead of it. Drink now through 2026. 974 cases made.

The 2017 Riesling Argetsinger Vineyard, another late release, has just three grams of sugar (owner Morton Hallgren said, “Our sugar analysis is only accurate down to plus or minus one gram per liter, so it can be between two and four grams per liter”) plus eight grams of total acidity. It comes in at 12.7% alcohol. Steely, deep and perhaps a touch reductive, this powerful Riesling is another classic from this vineyard. It’s not for the shy, though, and winemaker Morton Hallgren has built this for the long haul. As it airs out and warms, this gripping Riesling becomes a little friendlier, but only a little. It’s not entirely clear where the ceiling is for this wine just yet, but let’s start here and see where it goes in time. It does need to come into better balance. If you like your Rieslings softer and sweeter, this isn’t going to be for you. It definitely needs a food pairing — and perhaps a bit more cellar time.

A beautifully made crowd-pleaser, which is as vibrant and light-footed as it is juicy and peachy. Super-fresh with tons of garden-herb character that makes it hard to believe this has 28 grams per liter of unfermented grape sweetness. Wild-fermented in stainless steel. Vegan. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Aromas of canned pear and apple are met with candied white grapefruit and fennel pollen on the nose. Apple and pineapple flavors are jolted up by a kick of tonic on the palate. This sweet Riesling ends brisk and clean on the quick finish. (Alexander Peartree)

Bright cranberry and red currant aromas meet dried red chile flake, crushed black pepper and rosemary on the nose. The medium-bodied palate shows tense, compact tannins that meet a smooth berry flavor accented by peppery spices. (Alexander Peartree)

Lime, pippin apple and lychee notes give this a distinctive profile. It’s got good energy and freshness too, with a hint of sweetness on the finish. Drink now through 2023. 1,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)
RP8686 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 3rd Jun 2021
The 2020 Newt Riesling is another of the winery’s new offerings this year, all sourced from Lahoma vineyard. It comes in with 53 grams of residual sugar, 7.7 of total acidity and 9.1% alcohol. This was in bottle a bit less than six weeks when tasted. It’s not a full-on dessert wine, but it won’t exactly be a normal table wine either. Particularly given the winery’s mostly drier style, this new brand seems well into sugar. That might be the key difference between this and the winery’s other entry-level Riesling, the familiar and semi-dry Circle Riesling that winemaker Kelby Russell calls more “everyday” in style. Like the Circle Riesling of late, this has a smoky nose — a somewhat disturbing trend — but the fruit and sugar here are pretty delicious. It has enough acidity to avoid being cloying, and did I mention that it tastes great? It retains its balance all the while. If you like them on the sweeter side, it is a success at a nice price. Hopefully, the smoky aromatics will improve a bit. It wasn’t the most severe episode of that I’ve seen. Give it some air on opening it. There were 1,520 cases produced.
